The team played an excellent game in the final contest of the season at Lafayette but missed a two point conversion with seconds to play and lost by a 20-18 score. Fullback Page Walley was a consistent, hard-nosed runner all season, gaining 759 yards and averaging over 5 yards per carry. Luis Abreu and Chip Howell were standouts on the offensive line while Clift Hester was outstanding on defense for the cats. The football team gained tremendous stability according to Farrell despite the fact that outstanding halfback Pete Legler decided to transfer. The 1977 team did give grounds for hope that winning football will return to Davidson. Head Coach John Kochan, Head Coach Tom Abatemarco, Coach Jonathan Rhyne. Coach For those who have followed Davidson Basketball in recent years, Expect the Unexpected has become more of a necessary adage than a meaningless cliche. The 1977-78 season was marked by the resignation of Coach Dave Pritchett for health reasons after a one-day disappearance. Assistant John Kochan took over as head coach and before the end of the year, Eddie Biedenbach was named to replace him. Through all this turmoil the Wildcats managed a 9-18 record, their best in four years. John Gerdy averaged 25.8 points per game with a field goal percentage of .542. He was named to the All Southern Conference top five and was an A. P. Honorable Mention All American. Freshman point guard Chris Dodds proved he could put the ball in the basket with an outstanding 35 point effort against N.C. State. Pat Hickert enjoyed a fine season offensively, and Rich DiBenedetto came along to lead the team in rebounding and establish himself as a fan favorite. What hurt the Cats more than anything was a lack of intensity on defense, with the notable exception of Ernie Reigel. Field Hockey The second year of organized Field Hockey at Davidson pro- duced a 5-7-2 record, which Coach Susie Roberts termed a good season, considering the strength of the competition. The team was competitive in every game they played. Kirk Cameron was the team ' s leading scorer, and was selected to the Deep South All-Conference first team. The team scored only eight goals all year, but this was not for lack of effort. Dave Patton was a bright spot in a dismal season, pla ' ying many different positions very creditably. Kevin Robbins had a good season and goalie Doug Schuessler showed courage amidst a barrage of enemy shots every game. Coach Karl Kremser remained undaunted through all the disappointment, feeling that the team played about as well as they could have. Kremser is optimistic about his ability to get the job done at Davidson, and narrow losses to N.C. State and North Carolina show that this team has much talent from which to build upon. Roller ' s task was made easier because of the presence of Coty Pinckney, who enjoyed an outstanding senior sea- son. Pinckney was the team ' s top finisher in every race, set several school records and was the first Davidson runner to be named to All-Southern Conference team since 1963. Freshman John Davis also had a good year, finishing as the team ' s second place runner in every meet. The work of the Cross Country team as a group pleased Roller, who felt that his runners had a good year while competing largely against scholarship athletes. The team was plagued by injuries and was forced to forfeit at least one weight class in every match. Heavyweight Rob King had the best record among the wrestlers, and Scott Phillips recorded several big wins. Also having good years were Pat Dulany, Pat McKinsey and team captain Glenn Ballard. Bad luck again struck the Cats, as some of the team was forced to miss the Conference Tournament due to a snowstorm. rv t- TT ' t Steve Sellers Pat McKinsey Bill Allen Glenn Ballard Anthony San Filippo Mike Garfinkel Scott Phillips Pete Johnson Pat Dulany Rob King Swimming The Davidson Swimming Team, paced by Jonathan Washburn and Mark Tommer- dahl, finished with a 10-5 record and a fourth place in the Southern Conference Championships. Coach Pat Miller called Washburn the best swimmer Davidson has ever produced, and he proved it by taking a first and two thirds in the Conference meet. Tommerdahl also showed well, taking two second place finishes in the meet. The overall fourth place was the highest ever for Davidson, and reflected the overall strength of the team. Sarah Womack led the team in scoring and rebounding, and scrappy guard Beth Tanner shot impressively. Senior Sally Bondurant provided good leadership for the team, with Cindy Morrison and Donna Ferren rounding out a starting five which saw much duty during the long season.
