Consciously, but more often unconsciously, we have shielded ourselves from a confrontation with these contrasts through immersion in academic matters and the granting of only minimum concessions. As a result, the implications of these contrasts are ignored or improperly dealt with and we fail to see potential problems and even benefits. The reluctant acceptance of co-education, the uncertainty left by the dismantling of the football program, increased drug use among stu- dents as well as the increased demand for sexual hon- esty, and the challenge to the honor code are examples of some of the more obvious ways in which the walls surrounding us have broken down and the inadequate ways in which we have reacted. As a result there exists a tension on campus, due not only to our failure to deal with those problems and challenges caused by the contrast between Davidson and the outside world, but more importantly to a serious lack of communica- tion of our opinions and feelings concerning these contrasts and the new perspectives they require us to see. Communication is the bridge to meaningful as sessment and action, not only between ourselves and the world outside, but also among ourselves. This need for communication becomes even more imperative because the students entering Davidson today are more in touch with the world beyond Davidson than students in the past. In order to fulfill its role it is ob- vious that we, Davidson, must adapt to the needs and demands of students who are in many ways different from our alumni. We can do this without sacrificing our basic character and traditions, but neither can we et by without any sacrifices. We must use as our guide the realization that our intellectual and human in- tegrity requires us not only to become aware of the multitude of new perspectives in our own minds, but also to express our understanding of them in commun- ication in order to ultimately determine the course of our actions. If you understand this, then you must realize that Davidson and its students, faculty, ad- ministrators, staff, alumni, and trustees are Davidson, and that the responsibility to communicate with and among each other lies with you. If we can do this, if we can emancipate ourselves from our preconceived no- tions, our false stoicism, our competitive egotism, and our apathy, then a unique revolution will have oc- curred. Davidson ' s Dog Life I ' m starting a defense fund for the Davidson Forty-one. These oppressed beings are being imprisoned without trial. Known and loved by the whole Davidson student body, the Davidson Forty-one are oppressed because they com- prise a minority group. The persecution of this minority has reached a cres- cendo recently as they are be- ing threatened with incar- ceration. Known by names such as ' Stinky ' , ' Ears ' , ' Wasted ' , and ' Hungry ' , the Davidson minor- ity of four-footed friends is under attack. These animals are some of Davidson ' s most devoted students. Stinky goes to class in Chambers more than most registered students. Wasted is Ron Scott ' s best customer. If Wasted was writing the Michelin guide, Bailey House would be four-star. Anyone who is up in the small hours of the morning, wandering around campus or through Chambers, is sure to be accompanied by one of the Davidson Forty-one. When you ' re up at 2 a.m. watching that movie classic, The Cockroach That Ate Cin- cinnati , you can count on having Ears and Zeno for com- pany. Ms. Nicholls has warned students that pets kept in the dorm are subject to impound- ment. This is understandable if the animals are causing dam- age in the dorms. Davidson students who want the company and fun of having a pet should take the respon- sibility of preventing damage to the school ' s facilities. They should be aware of the pet ' s needs. They need exercise, feeding, attention and af- fection. Students who keep pets during the year should make provision for them at the end of the academic year. Pets should not be deserted and left to fend for themselves. Care should be taken to find the animal a good home if the student is not able to keep it. If there is no other possibility, the student should take the animal to the Animal Shelter. There are problems which we meet in having animals on campus. The pets are de- pendent on us and it is our responsibility to see that they get adequate care. However, is there the neces- sity of impounding the stray animals which are community property here at Davidson? I can ' t imagine a spring after- noon without the uproar creat- ed by the Davidson Forty-one. There have been rumors cir- culating on campus about a no-knock search-and-seizure of animals. After talking with Ms. Nicholls, I can assure you that these rumors are ground- less. There is no need to flush your pet down the toilet in or- der to get rid of incriminating evidence. There are certain problems that we face because of the Davidson Forty-one. The smell of wet dog has occasionally made Belk Lounge uninhabita- ble. There is a state health law that prohibits pets in college dormitories. The students who care about certain animals should take the responsibility for those animals. If we want the David- son Forty-one to remain at large, we should take the responsibility of keeping the animals off the furniture and under control. The Davidson Forty-one are a part of campus life. Let ' s keep them around. Have you heard the story of Stump, Cop Linker and the pick-up truck chase? by Mary Hobbie, reprinted from The DavidsonUn, February 1, 1974 Halloween: Captain America Meets Krishna A unique event occurred in keeping with the Halloween spirit. After the officially sanc- tioned celebration the Lord Krishna presided over a student body gathering in front of the sacred temple Belk. Student acts included Captain America and Young Buck, Wolfman and his patrol, the Mafia, the Elf, and various greasers. Hordes of pleasure-seeking scholars flocked to the roaring success. Two hours of exhausting Highland games officially began the event by cabar tossing, Highland wrestling, weight lifting, and a tug-of-war. Coached by Terry Hol- land and Bo Brickies, the Cats finished third in the conference after a disappointing loss to Richmond in the post-season tournament. The season was marked by several outstanding efforts as Davidson defeated such powers as South Carolina, Furman, Virginia, West Virginia, Wake Forest, and domi- nated Miami of Ohio to win the Charlotte Invita- tional Tournament. The Cats led the Southern Con- ference in offense and were ranked third and ninth nationally in free throws and field goals respective- ly. Individual standouts included top scorer and MVP Greg Dunn, high rebounder Larry Horowitz, Mike Sorrentino who led in assists, John Falconi who led the conference in free throw percentage, and T. Coached by Jim Larranaga, the team was led offen- sively by Kirke Combe who averaged 17.4 points per game. Steve Trusgnich dominated the boards by pull- ing down 8.7 rebounds a game, while Martin Lively contributed 32 assists. Team members included (first row) Lively, Trusgnich, Sam Avery, Dick Myrick, Jimmy Brendemuehl, Billy McLean, (second row) Combe, John Rhyne, Dave Wolter. Jerry Stallworth, Cliff Knech- tle, and (not pictured) Ken Schmader. J.V. Wildcats Slump After Awesome Start ' Cats Struggle Through Difficult Season For Davidson College football, it was a dis- appointing season. Faced with a tough sched- ule, the Wildcats struggled to a 2-8 record. Finally, with the team and its supporters in the throes of frustration, the trustees examined the situation and, on October 26, voted to desubsidize football, while building up other areas of the athletic program. Despite the unimpressive achievements of the team itself, the accomplishments of sev- eral individuals won national recognition. David Harper, ranked first at one point, fin- ished the season as the second leading passer in the country. Walt Walker, a Southern Conference All-Star for the second consec- utive ye ar, led the conference with 52 catches and finished fifth in the country. Walt was followed by Gary Pomeroy (47 receptions) and Mike Harding (40), thus giving the Cats a 1-2-3 sweep in individual receiving for the conference. 1. John Webel heads for the hole. 2. With the loss of four top players, Coach Jeff Frank was pleased with his 15-10 record and third place in the conference. Co-captains Bill Allen and Gary Bressler won the Most Valuable and Harry Fogleman Awards respectively. Again the team will lose its top players but freshman prospects should fill in. In their court debut the women ' s tennis team, organized by Junior Carol Goldsborough, triumphed with 8-5 record. Defeating such es- tablished teams as Hollins, Randolph-Macon, Queens, and Converse, the women upheld the Davidson tradition of fine tennis. Not Pictured; Becca Stimson and Bill DuPont. Wrestling Led by senior M.V.P. John Scandling, the wrestling team grappled through a tough but rewarding 4-6 sea- son. Individual laurels should be handed to Scandling as he went undefeated in regular season competition and finished fourth in the 142 weight class at the South- ern Conference tournament. Mention should also be made of Bob Jacobs and Jim Purcell who advanced to the semi-finals of the state wrestling tournament. Team members included: John Scandling, Bob Jacobs, Steve Pharr, Jim Purcell, Mike Dosal, Mark Scandling, Bob Price, Bob Bennett, Charlie Dorsey, Wayne Jonas, Ralph Holloway, Bill Mosley, Pope Mosley, Dave Cor- mack, Pete Hotchkiss, Kevin Clancey, Miles Ward. Sailing Led by MVP Darly Douglas, the sailing team glided through a long and highly competitive season. The regatta finishes for the Davidson contingent were not always at the top, but always proved fun. Highlighting the season was Douglas ' fourth place finish in the sin- glesboard championships held at Davidson in April, and two second place finishes at the spring regattas. Team members for both seasons were Tracy Charles, Douglas, Dave Fracis, Harvey Froelich, Randy Hen- wood, Tommy Lee, Mark Leonard, Chris Mangelsdorf, Mike Mayer, Frank Somerville, and Jim Stephenson. - Soccer Squad Rebuilds The 5-7-2 record did not say it all for the 1973 soccer season. Several new faces played key roles at various times throughout the season. A new coach, Chip Stone, made the scene, and the team lost only one player through gradua- tion. Rebuilding promised a brighter outlook for the future. Team: Donnie Bain, Phil Berringer, Tom Blackwood, Bruce Coser, Hor- ace Drew, Chris Ely, Steven Fabian, Robert Gizzard, Maddry Harrel, Billy Hawk, Bob Howell, Jim Jernigan, Jack Linard, Gordon Maner, John Mitchell, Dave Richardson, Jack Roddy, Charlie Slagle, Dick Spinner, Mike Tanner, Dan Thorp, Tom Tornee, Billy Vaughan, Bruce West, George Yancey. Crosscountry TEAM: Ricky Bell, John Barksdale, Fred Borch, Bill Cole, Ricky Deal, Greg Kunkleman, Bob Lautensack, Paul Mitchell, Rick Mullem, Jeff Neikirk, Coty Pinckney, Steve Scroggs, Bill Smith, Jesse Smith, Jim Sneed. It was a successful campaign in 1973 for the cross country team. They finished 5-7, and with everyone expected to return for another sea- son the future looked bright. Baseball Results closing out the 1974 season with a 10-15 record, the Wildcat Baseball team was plagued by inconsistent hit- ting and poor fielding. The highlight of the season was a doubleheader which the ' Cats took from Richmond. Catcher Mark Rodgmen was named to the All-South- ern Conference team and George Weicker and Gary Pomeroy captured spots on the second team and hon- orable mention roster, respectively. Pomeroy also led the Southern Conference in RBI ' s and hammered out five home runs. Mitch Stone was honored as the Most Valuable Player. Team Members are, Alan Alig, Tim Barr, Frank Folger, Mike Hall, Dave Ingold, Jim Kaulius, Ross Manire, Dave Mayberry, Jim Nichols, Tim Peck, Dwight Plemmons, Gary Pomeroy, Mitch Reaves, Mark Rodgman, Mitch Stone, Joel Tevy, Bill Todd, George Weicker, Dave Wiley, Ed Willingham, Dave Yearwood, Coach Tom Stevens. Scottish Trip Highlights Golfing Season The highlight of the golf season was a trip to St. An- drews, Scotland for several days of competition with some of the top teams from the United States. Other tournaments were the prestigious Chris Schenkel Invi- tational and the Southern Conference tournament. Team members included: Grant Whitney, Dick Spin- ner, John Simms, Jerry Home, Bob Reni, Randy Hinter, George Wilson. TEAM: Ricky Bell, Bob Bennett, Fred Borch, Tom Chase, |oe Clark, Walter Crouch, Ricky Deal, James Douglas, Buck Farrow, Steve Flemming, Chris Gomez, Derry Harper, David Kittrell, Greg Love, Marc Menchel, Dave Moore, Rick Mullen, Mike Pappas, Hal Paul, Coty Pickney, Mark Postove, Joel Pressley, Eppa Rixey, Allen Schaberg, Bill Smith, Jesse Smith, Tom Soos, John Stanfield, Bob Trumbo, Bob Vojovoda, Bob Westmoreland, and Dave Wolter. Trackmen Build Hopeful Record After a 0-6 record last spring, the Cat track team showed great improvement in earning a 4-5 marking this year. With the addition of the new Uniroyal all-weather track, Coach Sterling Martin looked forward to a winning season next year. Earning individual honors were MVP Mark Connors who led the team with 67V4 points, Captain Steve Shankweiler who won the Fetzer Award, Woody Van Meter who broke the school pole vault record, and Bob Lauten- sack who set a new mark in the steeplechase. Ruggers Despite a dearth of impressive victories and long winning streaks, the Davidson Rugby Football Club seemed to have a bright future in store. A large number of sophomores and freshmen came out for their first try at the game, insuring a developed team for future years. Although they didn ' t win much the team had a good time. Lady ' Cats Make Impressive Debut The Lady Wildcats had a fine season in their first year of action at Davidson, as they finished with an 8-3 record. Coached by Ann Holland and Joe Duncan, the team was led by Donna Sherrill scoring 10.8 points a game, Nancy Matheny averaging 10.3, and Captain Dea Booth who pulled down 8.5 rebounds a game. Other team members included Senior Katie Early, Junior Ann Bode, and Freshmen Katherine Morton, Sally Bondurant, Becca Stimson, Nora McNeill, Laurie Dunn, Renee Hester, and Lynne Keener. Swimming Looking at statistics, one might guess that the swimming team ex- perienced an uneventfu l season. The season ' s record was 3-5, but several individuals had fine per- formances. MVP John Scholer set new school records in the 1000 and 1650 meter freestyles. Jack Hobbs set another record in the 200 meter individual medley. Other top fin- isher were Peter Alford and Ted Mumby. The remaining team mem- bers were Jeff Castelli, Jack Dosch- er, Arn Eirasson, John McArther, Rob Mitchell, Cal Morton, Ronald Owens, Susan Reed and Ralph Taylor. Riflery The rifle team was led by Sopho- more Pete Goodman and Junior Ross McCloy. Although the season was not outstanding (4-6), the facilities were. The trustee ' s decision to give more subsidy to minor sports helped David- son to develop one of the best ranges in North Carolina. Team members includ- ed Jim Fayan, Curt Coho, Dallas Kirken- dal, Clark McChesney, Ted Mumby, Brad Sebastian and Mary Turner along with Goodman and McCloy. 77 73 64 78 71 S4 93 73 78 94 65 67 82 68 DAVIDSOIs! Intermural Athletics Provide Means To Unwind In looking at the Davidson intramural pro- grams of this past year, one must remember only one thing: that IMAC referees and um- pires are worse than any other officials any- where else. The Davidson IMAC council found itself pressed much more this year for the use of the school ' s facilities due to the addition of women ' s basketball and tennis teams. The situ- ation was never really resolved and the lack of communication between the intercollegiate athletic heads and IMAC was a constant source of scheduling confusion and irritation to all people involved in both programs. SAE won the flickerball title as they followed an easy path to victory by beating surprise fi- nalist Cleveland Indians. Emanon, the regular season leader, was upset by the SPE ' s in the tourney. Peyton Prospere and Eldon Basham were top players for their E ' s. In basketball, dark horse PCD pulled their heads together for the tournament after a very mediocre 3-3 season to defeat the powerful old men in the double elimination contest on the last day, 66-60 and 70-60. Bob Sanders, Marty Williamson, and Chris Young sparked the games to a superb tourney performance. Other top teams during the season were the Cleveland Indians, the Hoboken Sharks, SAE, and the Little Big Men. The IMAC All-Stars IMAC then put together a pick-up team and went out one February night to defeat the Junior Varsity 64-63. In wrestling, the Delts threw out the most weight to beat the SPE ' s in the two-night tour- nament. PeeWee Phillips took heavy weight honors with a hard-fought decision over Delt Ross Manire. The SPE ' s picked up the swimming champi- onship as they took the water-filled, one-day spectacle with Bobo Horton winning three events to lead the way. Rumor had it that the Sig Eps told everyone else that the swim meet was held on Lake Norman because no one else showed up. However the tourney was still close despite this. In the spring sports, the faculty defeated freshman hall C-l in the finals of the tennis tournament to take that crown behind Chip Stone, H. Edmunds White, and Earl MacCor- mac. After all, if you ' ve got nothing to do but play tennis all day, you ' re bound to be pretty good. The powerful Staten Island Fairies, led by Lawrence Sid Witz Horowitz, dominated vol- leyball action as they defeated the Banging Cannoneer alumni 2 in a double-elimination tourney. The Fairies had to come from behind as they had been handed their first volleyball defeat in two years by the ever-lovin ' SPE ' s. In Softball, those good ole southern boys, the KA ' s came from the underdog spot led by the pitching of Grey Lindsey and the hitting of the Steve Fleming to defeat preseason favorite the Queen and the 12 very nice guys two games to one in the best-of-three-series. Other good teams in the leagues included I Felta Thi, Ar- cadia, the Delts, and those drunken misfits, the Gozinyas. The SPE ' s took the point-total title as they entered anything on two legs in their fraternity to win every sport. Congrats are in order, but who really cares about the point title after all. The department sponsored its traditional literary endeavors, the Bell Award for writers, the Winelley Hall Award for best freshman writer, and two publications — the Miscellany and Inklings. Two major productions, A Midsummer Night ' s Dream and Spoon River Anthology highlighted the Drama Department ' s season. In addition a series of short productions were presented in the spring term. The Speech Department sponsored the Debate team which was able to hold an International Debate in addition to its regular schedule. Besides the Christmas Vespers program, the Music Department presented its annual series of recitals- concerts in the spring. The events featured both individuals and organized groups within the depart- ment. Featuring five exhibits per year, the Art Depart- ment ' s efforts were highlighted by the Davidson National Print and Drawing contest-exhibition. In the spring a student showing was also featured. Davidson College has regarded the Christian faith I rjl ' I L as central to its life since it was established. Education allQ I rillOSOPiiy which merely trains the mind without creating a spiritual awareness, developing moral integrity, and stimulating Christian compassion is only a partial education. The college does not wish to shield students from viewpoints foreign or opposed to the Christian faith, but desires to create a Christian context in which there can be dialogue between varying points of view. It is hoped the men who come to Davidson with Christian convictions will develop a more mature commitment to the Christian faith. Those who come without Christian convictions will, it is hoped, receive as authentic as possible an understanding of the Christian faith. 137 1. Thomas F. Clark, Associate Professor of 2. Algebra seminars at some of the Northern universities, investigation at the molecular level of life, and biological research were three out of innumerable projects which involved almost every faculty member in the math-science disciplines. Student involvement was frequent and often tagged by distinction. The William Lowell Putnam Mathe- matical Competition awarded Pete Kyle, Davidson ' s most recent Rhode ' s scholar, an honorable mention. Grants presented by Davidson College as well as from outside sources permitted many biology majors to pursue many interests ranging from electroencepha- lography to biological diversity. Our Chemistry and Physics Departments maintained a one hundred per- cent student participation level in various studies of pure chemistry and practical on-the-job applications. Grants permitted research on how spiders build webs and how some chemical reactions are affected by light. This is the type learning situations provided in the math-science area of Davidson. Yet under and behind all the cold rationality of reality runs a nourishing stream of irrationality, of humor, to sustain us. Not only the ancient Greeks, but the modern philosopher Nietzsche and the mod- ern playwrite Chekhov realized this. But not only our humor, but our whole existence loses its value if the humor is not balanced by an open expression of, and communication with reality. We can neither have reality nor humor alone; through communication we can have both. The mature man must be able to laugh and weep at the same time.
