We compre- hend these elements, they are facts to us, but what makes them form this integrated whole, how and why are they related, and is there nothing more, what of the before, and of the after? We, students, faculty and others who know Davidson College ask these questions. Why this entity from these component parts? Has it served and will it continue to serve a useful purpose? HERITAGE. . . What is Davidson ' s heritage and how may we discover it? Is it only a part of Davidson ' s transition from past to present? Or is it a living spirit, an integral part of the college? One stands alone, looking at the church, Our constant reminder of Christian influence. His glance wanders from the white columns of a literary hall To the new brick of the science building. Our constant reminder of a Davidson past and present. He passes professors who are talking About curriculum changes, honors programs, humanities courses. Our constant reminder of a present living heritage. He smiles as a student stops him To ask to show him around. Our constant reminder of a gracious past too soon forgotten. This then is our heritage. These buildings and these men. Each in its own way, whether past or present, Comprises a part of that which has been And is called Davidson. We may look about and see our heritage. And yet, if asked, we cannot define it As easily as our casual glance recognizes it each day. [6]
