I □ When the Id, Ego, and Superego work to- gether harmoniously, man can carry out sat- isfying transactions with his environment. These transactions fulfil! the basic needs and desires that lurk in the selfish, impul- sive, asocial region of the personality called the Id. The Id provides for the immediate dis- charge of quantities of excitation that are released in the organism by internal or ex- ternal stimuli. This function fulfills what Freud called the pleasure principle by ridding man of tension or reducing the amount of tension to a low level. A reflex proce.ss or a memory image of the object (primarn process) can satisfy the Id ' s desires. Destructive and aggresxive urges are derivatives of man ' s death instincts. EQO Man finds that his Id drives are satisfied more readily and more effectively in certain ways and places than in others. Merely forming a mental image of a de- sired object does not procure it, and naive bursts of impulsive motor activity can result in punishment from the environment. The Ego develops as the intermediary be- tween the Id and the external world. It en- ables man to adapt to his environment. The veality principle governs the Ego by postponing the discharge of energy until the actual object that will satisfy the need has been found or produced. To find food, a mate, and other goal objects necessary for life, man must accommodate himself to extei-nal reality or assert mastery over it. i
