Synthesis of the personality At Davidson, certain forces act upon the mental appa- ratus to mold a view or personality distinctively one ' s own. As a result, the same realities that did not affect the freshman four years ago greatly disturb the senior today. Freud has divided this mental apparatus into Id, Ego, and Superego. The personality is always dominated by any one or a combination of these three components. K -. m ■ ■■ ' mi! ii ' iiiT n iiii n N nil 11 ■■■■ N •■■■ ■• ■■■■ . n Hii n wn II nil I nil

I □ When the Id, Ego, and Superego work to- gether harmoniously, man can carry out sat- isfying transactions with his environment. These transactions fulfil! the basic needs and desires that lurk in the selfish, impul- sive, asocial region of the personality called the Id. The Id provides for the immediate dis- charge of quantities of excitation that are released in the organism by internal or ex- ternal stimuli. This function fulfills what Freud called the pleasure principle by ridding man of tension or reducing the amount of tension to a low level. A reflex proce.ss or a memory image of the object (primarn process) can satisfy the Id ' s desires. Destructive and aggresxive urges are derivatives of man ' s death instincts.
