Tie Quips and Crams r The QUIPS an DAVIDSON COLLEG L. R. Drake Tom Smith Co-Editors J. S. Love D. H. Lazenby, Ji Co-Business Managers RAMS of 1945 lVIDSON, n. c. 3 L- — -.« • •• From Days Gone By . . HIS is Davidson 1945. Another QuiPS AND CRANKS and another milestone in the passing years. Here we mark the progress and record the history of the events that have gone into the mak- ing of this year. May we never forget the life that we have known here, for this is the Davidson that we have come to love, the Davidson that will live in our memories. These are the phases of our life here: the aca- demic, the social, the athletic, each with its place and its purpose, each with its own peculiar ability to become a part of our world of knowledge and memory. This is a record of college life in the crucial years of a great war. Deep inroads have been made on the normal course of activities. Despite this, however, the life of the college has gone forward with no lack of determination. The Davidson spirit is alive as ever. In the world outside our gates there has been the violence of conflict. Our lives have been shaken by it, and our attitudes have been reshaped. We have taken a part of the tradition from years gone by. a sense of permanence and security. With this has been mingled the spirit of the battles of today. With these in our grasp, we can look to future years, to the world that we shall build tomorrow. Davidson becomes a part of us, integrated into the structure of our lives. We can never forget our experiences here because for the most of us they were the years of change from youth to man- hood. We have linked them to our past and build upon them for the future. Three classes rather, January, May and August each with its graduation. Many were the beginnings of this class, which has now reached the end of its days at David- son. Some men finished in the normal course; some finished after periods of absence from the college: others took advantage of the speed-up program; such is the history of the class of ' 45. Its men have taken up where others left off. These are the few left from the many who began with them. But such is war. Its men-of-the-year are few in comparison to other years. This is organized with a president, elected by the student body, with a council composed of the presidents of the Senior. Junior, and Sophomore classes. In addition to the council, repre- sentatives are elected from each class to serve on the council. OWENS, President A ft GOVERNMENT The duties of this student organization are to enforce the Constitution and laws of the student body and to promote the spirit and good will of the school. The most cherished aspect of this traditional part of Davidson life is the Honor System, which has proved invaluable in maintaining the high ideals of the school. The Student Council elects a Court of Control, the body which oversees the Freshman class. Its duty is concerned with matters of discipline among the freshmen, except for those cases serious enough to be referred to the Student Council. Its influence in social and religious life is wide. The campus looks to the Y for leadership and guid- ance in many affairs. During the past year the work of the Y has been particularly important. Many of the campus activi- ties have been greatly reduced due to a smaller student body. The concerted opinion was, however, that it was essential for Y work to be carried on in the manner which it has always been. This has been done most efficiently by Jim Alex- ander, president, and Professor F. K. Fleagle, faculty adviser, with much help from Dr. Carl Pritchett. Assisting the president as usual has been the Cabinet. The Board of Control is the executive body of the Y. M. C. A. It is composed of the following men: Mr. F. L. Jackson, Dr. J. R. Cunningham, Dr. L. B. Schenck, Prof. F. K. Fleagle. Dr. C. R. Pritchett. J. P. Alexander, K. M. Waters. H. N. Spencer, B. H. Fisher, W. A. Wier. and G. M. Pfohl Davidson was one of the few m en ' s colleges in war-time America to keep active all of its usual musical enterprises. In large measure this was to be at- tributed to the assiduity and en ergy of Mr. James Christian Pfohl. director of the music de- partment, and of Mr. Earl F. Berg director ol the Glee Club. All of the organizations had fewer members, but in a way this was a positive gain, on the score of resultant improvement in the musicianship of the in- dividual. The Symphonic Band of l ' M4-45 had about 25 play- ers of high caliber, in an en semble of balance and claritv The group have a formal con cert on December 1 . Another such concert was planned for March. Id be followed in April by the annual Spring tour. Band officers were R. E. Hollinger. J I West K I Plaster, and H. G Wvatl R. O. T. C. BAND Earl Berg The Glee Club took part in musical events which have be- come traditional for December — the Christmas Vespers and the Messiah. During the year they lent faithful aid to college ves- per services. It is a record of events in the contemporary life at Davidson. Its pages are devoted to the varied items of news about students and faculty. There are editorials, sports news of campus organ- izations, fraternities, and feature columns. As have all things The Davidsonian has felt the war in several ways. The staff has been reduced from the usual number because of the small student body. There has also been a considerable reduction in the amount of advertising. Despite these things the paper has carried on with deter ruination. DAVIDSONIAN The work of the paper is divided between two staffs. In the Editorial department the Editor and his assistants make up the copy for the printer out of the news that has been gathered. The Business staff has the job of securing advertisements and handling the financial details. For the first semester Jim Love was editor. Upon his leaving, his duties were taken over by Sonny Blain. Jim Alexander has been Business Manager for the entire year. In the past The Davidsonian has been a leader among college papers, always receiving a high rating from the Associated Collegiate Press. The Editors of this year, as those of past years, deserve high praise for the excellent work they have done. Blain. Editor (Second Semester) The Night Before It Goes To Press ALEXANDER. Business Manager WHITE, Assistant Business ! and Photographer QUIPS and Drake. Co-Editor SMITH, Co-Editor This is the yearbook of the Senior Class. It is an attempt to take a representative cross-section of life at Davidson and preserve it in a form in which it may serve as an enduring reminder of college life. The fact that there was no annual for last year only increased our determination not to allow this year to pass without one. This is a summary of life as one finds it here, formal and informal. Like all things it has felt the effects of the war. But like all things with solid foundations it stands the affronts of the times with a firmness born of age and character. Lett to right: WHITE. Photographer: GUNN, Pho- tographer: WHITAKER, Art Editor. APPERSON. Aaocwi, The college, faculty, administration, students, fraternities, sports, in fact all phases of life are incorporated into this volume. It is a record of experience, of growth, of achievement. L. Fructher Adjutant (no picture) ARMY SPECIALIZED TRAINING RESERVE On June 1. 1944, Service Command Unit 3420 of the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program was formed at Davidson College. By June 10, the unit had received its quota of two hundred twenty men. All men in the unit were seventeen years old and high school graduates. They had previously been accepted in the Air Corps Enlisted Reserve and were placed in the A. S. T. R. P. unit after having passed certain qualifying tests. The government planned to continue their education, until they reached their eighteenth birthdays, so as to fit them better for future duty in the Army. Consequently, various academic programs were set up here at David- son for them. Terms lasting for twelve weeks consisted of twenty-five class hours per week. The academic subjects studied were English, physics, mathematics, history, geography, chemistry and military science. The unit also underwent extensive physical training programs, attending regular physical education classes six hours a week. An A. S. T. R. P. basketball team was organized and it twice played against the college team. Paat Seventy-six The staff officers consisted of Major E. E. Marsh. Commandant; Captain W. F. Crocker, Assistant Commandant: First Lieu- tenant L. K. Ward. Supply Officer, and First Lieutenant L. Fruchter, Adjutant. The non- commissioned officers were S Sgt. McGuinnes; T Sgt. Spearman; T Sgt. Burton: Sgt. Reilly: Sgt. Hoose; and Sgt. Thorn. The unit had its own company fund which sponsored various social activities. Highlight of the social functions was a formal dance held in October. After two complete terms or six months of college work, the men had completed their academic training and were sent to North Georgia State College and to Auburn Poly- technic Institute for further work. Davidson ' s A. S. T. R. P. unit was officially closed the second of December. 1944. PROGRAM CADET OFFICERS First row. left to right: Lt. Col. Furman. Maj. Ruckei. Maj. Brett. Capt. Fabian. Shepard and Skipper ' FOOTBALL Facing Coach Shepard in the fall of ' 44 was the problem of a football team. Undoubtedly, due to the war, there was no possibility of a collegiate class team. The question was whether to have a team that would play high schools and pre- paratory schools or no team at all. When the former was decided upon Assistant Coach Phil Hudson came to help in get- ting things started. When the first game came up there was some doubt as to how we would fare with a heavier team. However we were able to tic Woodberry Forest 6-6. In these first days the prospects were bright with players like Pell and Cover- ington as ends: Myatt and Strickland, tackles: Monroe and Dunbar, guards: Hay, center: and in the backfield were Bryant, Hagan. Patterson, and Edwards. JIM LOVE, Manage Dave Johnson. Captain Page Eighty Soon, however, it was a different story. Many of the best players left for the armed services. Into the line-up came Johnson and Manget. guards; Lasley. Barringer. Keesler. Neill. and Sherrill. backfield; Herion at center. Among the interesting and successful games of the season was the exciting night game with Harding in Charlotte which ended 14-13 in our favor. The game with Mooresville in which the score was 33-0 in favor of Davidson and the game with Darlington, a highly rated team, ended 13-7 in our favor, were the high points of interest during the season. These men played only seven games together before the semester ended. Edwards. Lowry. and Bryant left, and Coach Shepard had to reorganize the team. Owens added some scoring punch for a while, but he was unable to con- tinue for the entire season. Scarborough and Neill as guards: Berry as center, together with Wall and O ' Briant com- posed the team which played most of the season. These men. as well as Blackburn and Etheridge, were letter- men. The other three men on the second team were Sherrill. Keesler. and Simpson.
