JJAVIDSON We Have Passed Our Four Years, Not Merely Acquiring Knowledge, Perhaps when you leave Davidson, you can recall with ease all those happy days you spent there — but what of future years ' In ' 51 will you remember college as just another four years that are gone, or will your memories last through that decade as clear and fresh as they arc today.- ' With this our central theme, that we believe these memories worth holding at any cost, we dedicate this book to keeping ever poignant in the future the thoughts which we hold so dear today. Do you remember your first day at Davidson, a little bewildered, more than a little frightened, and above all wondering just what college held for you? You lost that feeling soon amid the maze of studies, fraternities, and football games. Gradually came the first tentative friendships, and you began to realize what a wonderful place college can be. Then those first reports, not so good maybe, but the next one would be better and maybe it was. Christmas, exams, elections, all followed in rapid succession, and you were home for the summer — wondering just what had happened to your first year and a little sad that so many faces were gone for good. That summer passed quickly, almost before you knew it. but it was a kind of relief to get back to school, see all the familiar places, swap stories with friends, and discuss the demerits of ' 42 as compared with the merits of ' 41. That year you made better grades than before, not by studying more certainly, but you were sure by now you could beat the professors at their own game. As a sophomore you looked up to the seniors less, and down on the freshmen for the first time. Somehow that year slipped away and you were home this time beginning to feel that you were older and that some few responsibilities belonged to you. Each Day Learning Something New and Valuable, FOR THESE WILL WE Then came your junior year, probably the happiest time of all. for you were absorbed with your friends, your girl, and the studies which you really liked. Some freshmen arc pretty nice fellows, you decided, a few even worth cultivating. Perhaps you realized dimly that the pro- fessors actually liave your interests at heart and even like to see everyone in their class pass. Along came the dances and you were right there, enjoying the social aspects of college more and more. With the arrival of spring, elections took the field, absorbing all interest for a couple of months, whether you ran for anything or not. You were glad when your friends took over the important offices, and there was no pang of envy when ODK passed you by. Friend- ships had been strengthened by three years of associations, and you were beginning to feel like the class of 1941. rather than seven score individuals. You were part of a unit, as a rising senior you felt your responsibilities, and for the first time vou knew ihat you were D.WIUSON. ' 41.
