JJAVIDSON We Have Passed Our Four Years, Not Merely Acquiring Knowledge, Perhaps when you leave Davidson, you can recall with ease all those happy days you spent there — but what of future years ' In ' 51 will you remember college as just another four years that are gone, or will your memories last through that decade as clear and fresh as they arc today.- ' With this our central theme, that we believe these memories worth holding at any cost, we dedicate this book to keeping ever poignant in the future the thoughts which we hold so dear today. Do you remember your first day at Davidson, a little bewildered, more than a little frightened, and above all wondering just what college held for you? You lost that feeling soon amid the maze of studies, fraternities, and football games. Gradually came the first tentative friendships, and you began to realize what a wonderful place college can be. Then those first reports, not so good maybe, but the next one would be better and maybe it was. Christmas, exams, elections, all followed in rapid succession, and you were home for the summer — wondering just what had happened to your first year and a little sad that so many faces were gone for good. That summer passed quickly, almost before you knew it. but it was a kind of relief to get back to school, see all the familiar places, swap stories with friends, and discuss the demerits of ' 42 as compared with the merits of ' 41. That year you made better grades than before, not by studying more certainly, but you were sure by now you could beat the professors at their own game. As a sophomore you looked up to the seniors less, and down on the freshmen for the first time. Somehow that year slipped away and you were home this time beginning to feel that you were older and that some few responsibilities belonged to you. Nor Ever Spending Our Days In Listless Schoolroom Drudgery, . ■ I Rut The Associations With High- Minded Students and Cultured Professors, Each Day Learning Something New and Valuable, FOR THESE WILL WE Then came your junior year, probably the happiest time of all. for you were absorbed with your friends, your girl, and the studies which you really liked. Some freshmen arc pretty nice fellows, you decided, a few even worth cultivating. Perhaps you realized dimly that the pro- fessors actually liave your interests at heart and even like to see everyone in their class pass. Along came the dances and you were right there, enjoying the social aspects of college more and more. With the arrival of spring, elections took the field, absorbing all interest for a couple of months, whether you ran for anything or not. You were glad when your friends took over the important offices, and there was no pang of envy when ODK passed you by. Friend- ships had been strengthened by three years of associations, and you were beginning to feel like the class of 1941. rather than seven score individuals. You were part of a unit, as a rising senior you felt your responsibilities, and for the first time vou knew ihat you were D.WIUSON. ' 41. REMEMBER DAVIDSON And ilx-n you were a senior, this lime completely bewildered b llie suddenness will) which the years had gone — and inwardly Irightened by the jirospect of facing a cold and hostile world. Consequently you took advan- tage of those few remaining sheltered days. Bull-sessions on the front porch of Georgia, visiting the professors whom at last you had come to know and admire, going to every dance, week-ends with fellow seniors, taking part in stu- dent affairs, controlling student opinion unconsciously for better or worse with these was passed your last year at Davidson, and the results. ' As yet wc do not fully know, but we do feel and recognize the influence of Davidson in our every act. From her we have received the principles of character which will last us through life. Associations with students and faculty have been a priceless heritage to every Davidson man. one that cannot be surpassed at any college. And so. in future years we hojie that this book will help you remember, wherever you are and what- ever you do. you II always be D.WIDSON COLLKGi:. THE CLASS OL 1941. Tc O DOCTOR SCOTT CARY LYON An admirable teacher, an inherent gen- tleman, and an approachable friend. Dr. Lyon has been an integral part of David- son for many years. Composed of fourteen members, inclu ding the president of the student body, the presidents of the three upperclasses, the officers of the student body, and four seniors, two juniors, and one sophomore elected by the respective classes, it enforces the Honor-System, as well as striving in every way to promote higher ideals on the campus. Supervision of the Freshman Court of Control is another of the Council ' s many duties, that body being elected by the senior members of the coun- cil. Surpassing many other college humor magazines, the Scripts ' n Pranks does more than merely amuse its readers. In it are found the more serious poems, short stories, and plays of the students seriously interested in writing. Under the capable guidance of Paul Bum- barger and Ralph Harkey. the magazine has this year hit a new high in the excellence of its con- tents, particularly its jokes. Featured have been the drawings of Dan Hodges, along with poems by Paul Crane, short stories from a host of con- tributors, and a dope column by three anony- mous members of the senior class. Each spring the new Editor is selected from the managing editors by vote of the entire stu- dent body. President Forensic Council The Forensic Council is the governing body for the debating teams, and controls all debating at Davidson as well as handling the budget and schedules. The council is made up of six men who have shown special inter- est in debating, and they work in conjunction with a faculty committee. For 1941 Bill Loftin was President of the Council, with Frank Barker and Drury Thompson serving as Vice-Presidents. This year the council worked out a sche- dule of debates whereby two men were sent west, two north, and two south. On the western trip Frank Barker and Bill Summers debated Centre. Louisville. Denison. Oberlin. and the University of Missouri. On the north- ern trip Al Winn and Drury Thompson met Wake Forest, University of Richmond. Wil- liam and Mary, Rutgers, and Wesleyan. Bill Loftin and Fred Morton handled the southern tour, on which they debated Charleston. South Carolina. Georgia Tech, Alabama, and Birmingham-Southern. The Forensic Council also has charge of freshman debating, and although the fresh- men do not usually make a debating trip, the Council arranges a freshman tournament on the campus. Honors for debating in the class of 41 go unanimously to Frank Barker, who has lost hardly a single debate in three years, defending both affirmative and negative sides of all questions. For the past two years he has been Davidson ' s outstanding man in the Winthrop debating tournament, where he capably upheld the high standard set by previous Davidson debaters. Besides the Annual Musical Festival, presented at Davidson for the third time, the Band also gave numerous con- certs. These renditions were given both at David- son and in neighboring cities, where the public acclamation gave due praise to the work of Mr. Pfohl and Mr. McDonald. LITTLE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA This year Davidson continued an organiza- tion started in 1939. the Davidson-Queens Little Symphony. This group combines the best musical talent of the two schools, and has per- formed both on the air and in Charlotte several times. Both in respect to the Orchestra and the other musical organizations, Mr. Pfohl and his assistants have made a great deal of progress in the last few years. Interest is growing con- stantly, and music takes a prominent place in campus activities. Page One Hundred Thirly-ihree DAVIDSON WILDCATS OF 194D JAY BOLIN, Captain Davidson 19: Rollins 7 Davidson ' s Wildcats opened the 1940 sea- son with an impressive victory against Rol- lins ' fast and tricky Tars. Showing a smooth running attack, accurate passing, and a power- ful defense, the Cats were more than a match for Rollins ' deceptive aerials and laterals. Both teams scored in the opening minutes, Davidson on a straight off-tackle play by Spencer, and the Tars on a long pass. At half time the score was knotted, but early in the third period, Hackney pulled down a Spencer pass to score standing up, and was shortly followed by All-State Guard Johnson on a new guard-around play. From this point the Cats settled down to straight football, and coasted to a well-earned victory. F U U T U A I, I, Davidson 0: N. C. Siati- H Playing probably the only disappointing game of tlu-ir entire season. Davidson ' s (]als dropped il)eii lust eonlerence ame to the W ' olfpack by a five touchdown margin. In the tirst period Spencer and Hackney com- binei.1 to carrv tlu ' ball to State ' s two. where they were held on clowns. This en ded the Cats ' only threat antl trom then on it was State ' s game. In the second period State countered on a quick opening play through the center which seemed to demoralize the Cats. By sheer power the Wolfpack managed to score once more in the second period and rolled up three more touchdowns in the second half. Davidson 7: Carolina 27 Catching the Far Heels on the rebound from a Wake Forest defeat, the Cats played them a beautiful game only to lose 27 to 7, after superior weight and reserves wore them lV.I— FOOTBALL down. Little Dave Spencer surprised Caro- lina supporters when early in the second quar- ter he received a Tar Heel punt on the 42 and returned it through the entire Carolina team for a touchdown, putting Davidson ahead 7-0. Towards the end of the half Carolina man- aged a score which tied things up at inter- mission. Only after overpowering the Cats did the Heels tally three more before the end of game time. Davidson 7: V.M.I. 13 Greatly outweighed, the Wildcat offense was kept bottled up most of the afternoon; but their fighting defense was outstanding — Bob Johnson and Jay Bolin starring. Late in the second stanza the Cadets worked deep into Cat territory, and tallied with an aerial. Soon after intermission, Pritchard slipped over on a punt return to give the Cadets a 13-0 lead. But the Cats were not to be denied — Claude Hackney gathered in a deflected aerial and raced over standing up to the end scoring 13 to 7. Davidson ' s forward wall played jam-up ball against overwhelming odds in weight and reserves. Davidson 27: Sewanee 20 Sewanee ' s Tigers came into the Cat ' s lair undefeated, and appeared to be continuing that way until the final minutes, when Hack- l ' f ' ' — ik 1 ' i HALL ncy yatlicix ' tl in .1 lonv; .uii.il tioni .)ol)iiny Prodricks to km i ihr counl 10 10. This was followed bv .1 pass interception by Spencer, who canieii it over Ironi li)e ten on two plays, enablinv tlie (!ats to conie out on top 17 to 20. Jolinn ' I lediicks scored the Wildcats ' tirst two markers, to keep them in the game: and tlie eiilire hue kept the ligcr backs bottled up. lorcing them into aerials which finally back-fired and led to a Wildcat victory. D.wiixsoN 7: FURMAN 40 Completely c:)vercome in the second halt by superior reserves and the blistering heat. Davidson dropped their fourth conference game 40-7 to Purman. Leading 7-6 at inter- mission as a result oi Jim Crutchfield ' s finger- tip catch in the end zone, the Wildcats, exhausted, yielded five touchdowns in the second half to present the Purples with a homecoming victory. Outplaying the Hurricane during the first half, the Cats returned to the field a different team in the second half and never got started with the loss of Spencer and Fredricks. Out- played but not out-fought, our Wildcats fell before greater odds. Davidson 17: Centre 12 Climaxing the homecoming festivities with a fourth period outburst, the Wildcats over- came (AUtre ' s Prayin ' Clolonels with that never-say-down spirit. Handicapped by numerous fumbles in the first three periods, the Cats were denied a scoring opportunity, while the Colonels rolled up a two touch- down lead. From the lime (Jaude Hackney gathered in Spencer ' s long aerial tci score early in the final stanza, it was Davidson ' s game. Jay Bolin, Spencer, and Hackney again, followed with quick markers to end an exciting home- coming game with victory. Davidson ' s great team of 1910 witnessed this third Wildcat victory. George Grantham Manager FDDTBALL Davidson 13: Duke 46 Throwing a scare into the mighty Dukes. Davidson ' s Cats held a 13-13 tie with them at half time. Hackney opened the Wildcats ' scoring in the first period with a beautiful 95-yard kickoff return behind perfect interference. In the second stanza it was Hackney again, on the end of a Sharpe aerial that netted 45 yards and a score. Coach McEver, content with our first half laurels, used every man on the squad in the second period, in which Duke netted five more touchdowns. David- son thus rested its starting eleven for the two remaining games, and also gained a moral victory. Davidson 26: Hampden-Sydney Davidson ' s Wildcats completely outclassed a Hampdcn-Sydney Tiger team in every department in their last home game of the season. Dave Spencer count- ered the Cats ' first two markers, giving them a 1 3-0 lead at intermission, and in the third period broke loose for 45 yards and his third score. Frank Niven finished the Cats ' scoring, scooping up a blocked kick and racing 50 yards into pay dirt. The Wildcat defense, led by Jay Bolin, Hank Bahnson, and Bob Johnson, proved too much for a small band of fighting Tigers, who were considerably handicapped by lack of reserves and ground power. Davidson 20: Citadel 6 Journeying to the City-by-the-sea for their final game, the Wildcats came out on the long end of a 20-6 score to finish the season with five wins and five losses. Davidson ' s power proved too much for the Cadets, with Johnny Fredricks plung- ing over for all three scores. The Brigade came out after intermission and appeared a different ball club, but the Cats stopped them after one marker and went on to register another themselves. With this game. Bahnson. Balsley. Johnson. Bolin, Niven. Jonas. Crutchfield, and Pharr, ended their grid careers in a blaze of glory for the Red and Black. ' V  .1 Si ' i 89 BASKETBALL THE BASKETBALL SEASON Shepard Coach With only three lettermen — Captain Hogg. Yar- borough. and McLcod. returning from last year ' s quint. Coach Shepard was presented with a job to mold an impressive five to compete in this fast- moving Southern Conference. Captain Jimmy Hogg proved to be an inspirational leader and consistent high scorer — finishing fourth in conference scoring, to lead his team through a season of eleven wins against twelve losses. Highlight of the year was the Wildcat ' s two close games with North Carolina ' s nationally prominent aggregation — holding them to 38-30, and 39-31, with Captain Hogg outscoring Ail-American George Glamack in both encounters. The fighting Cats also bagged a game from South Carolina ' s second ranking conference team. Starting the season rather slow, the Cats lost five of their first seven conference games: but rounding into shape in the home stretch they won three out of the last four — barely missing the conference tourney. Captain Hogg, teaming with Bobby Williams, who broke into the line-up in mid-season. Captain- elect Yarborough. Fredricks. and Bell gave us a team that was never overshadowed in any game. Losing only two men — Hogg and Williams, through graduation the Cats seem destined to have a fast moving, experienced quint next sea- son with seven lettcrmen returning along with several good freshmen: although the all round play of these two seniors will be sorely felt. f V ! Fhe Cats took ten out of fourteen firsts — led by Archie Taylor. Chase Brenizer. and John Belk with H. 12. and 10 points respectively. Ihe only weakness in this meet seemed to be in tlie middle distances, but with strength in all other departments the Cats appeared headed for a successful season. In their next meet, with the strong V. P. I. aggregation, the Cats were forced to be content with a 75- ' :i to 50 ' :; loss. Taylor and Breniz.er were again high scorers with 11. and 10 points: ' li I B A C K however, the Gobblers were too strong in the distances, dashes and weight events. The Cats ' points were won mainly in the hurdles, high and broad jumps, pole vault, and shot — in which they garnered firsts. Hampered by a long trip during the morning, the Cats lost their next meet to N. C. State ' s Wolfpack. 66 to 60. Taylor and Brenizer were again top scorers with 13 and 11 points, and Hugh Sprunt. with a first in the 220, garnered 7 points. This meet was not decided until the final event, the Jave- lin, in which State copped first place to eke out a victory. The Cats were un- able to earn their usual share of firsts, winning only four. With the loss of only three men at graduation this year. Captain White, Brenizer. and Talmadge. the Cats should have a well rounded team next year, being weak in only the distances. The Cats have three more meets this year, and prospects are for three vic- tories. BASEBALL BASEBALL Davidson ' s Wildcats started the season rather slowly, and were late getting under way, losing the first six games of the season. The Cats were handicapped this season by a short- age of pitchers — Ed Lucas being the only twirler returning from last year ' s team. In the opener on April 5th. Duke ' s Blue Devils slipped over a win again the Cats 6 to 3. The fighting Cats journeyed to Chapel Hill for their next game and were blanked 10 to by the Tar Heels. They encountered Duke the next day and lost by the score of 7-1. The Cats returned home for a stand and proceeded to lose four more. Guilford defeating them in a see-saw game 12 to 8. There remain ten games on the schedule, and the Cats showing steady improvement .seem sure to win the majority ot them. l:d Lucas has been the work-horse on the mound so far this year, and has turned in creditable per- formances, being backed by Mac Morris. Bob McLeod. Jack Davis, and Bob Rheinhardt. Captain Rusty Edmondson has led his team from behind the plate so far this season and has been turning in a fine job. A de|xntiable inlield. composed of Carter. I iogg. Owens, and Niven have shown up well to date, altiiough being hampered by numer- ous injuries. I he outfield composed of Latta, Clark, and DafTin has been playing some fine defensive ball but lack that essential batting punch needed. C oach Shepard has had a real problem this year in trying to weld together a smooth working combination, but now that he has gotten this, the Cats seem headed for several victories in their remaining games. With the loss of only four men through graduation, and with several pitchers being developed this season the Cats seemed destined to have a much improved team for next year. • t. f fC cr ' ( WRESTLING The Wildcat wrestlers, up against stiff competition and hampered by numerous injuries, were unable to come out on top of a single match: tying in one, however. Captain Jack Abels was the standout of the season, as he was victorious in all but two meets — reaching the finals in the Southern Conference Tournament. The Wildcats were downed by teams from N. C. State, Carolina. Maryland, and V. P. I., but fought to a draw with the Winston-Salem Y team. In the lighter weights. Latta had a good record, while big Ed Hipp showed up well in the heavyweight class. The other weights were filled in by inexperienced men. Coach Parker, with promising numeralmen from the freshman team and several returning lettermen, is looking forward to a much more successful season in 1942. The lighter weights will be open, but Freeze, Turnage. Carter, and Captain-elect Hipp will be counted on heavily for next year. TENNIS l).iviilsi n ' s r.ui|iu ' ti-crs for 1 ' H 1 . even with the loss of four litiirnun from List yojr ' s cr.ick team, have shown fairly well in matches to date — winninjj five while losing a like number. Dick Shore has the best comparative record to date with six wins against four losses in the Number one slot, while Moose Sain playing Number four has seven wins to three losses. Miller Sproull, Number two man, has four wins against two losses. The remainder of the team is made up of Lyman Parrigan. John Crichton, and Craig Schmidt. Captain Dick Shore and Miller Sproull entered the Southern Conference Tourney at Durham on May 8th thru the 10th, but their record was not known at press time. G DLF Starting the season with only two Icttcrmcn — Captain Granville Sharpe and Jack Abels, the Cats have made an excellent showing to date, winning five while losing only two. The determined Cats placed fifth in the fast Southern Intercollegiate Tourney with Captain Sharpe taking second place for the Southern Championship. Harris McReynolds and Stuart Rogers round out the regular team with Pete Cavert and Bob Bryant acting as alternates. In their first match the Cats defeated Apprentice 14 to 7. following with a victory over the College of Charleston, 10 ' 2 to 7 ' 2. On their southern tour during the holidays the Cats defeated Rollins. 1 5 to 3, while losing their only two matches to Florida 3J,- to 14J 2 . and to Georgia by the same score. On returning the Cats earned victories over Hampden- Sydney by a 14 to 7 score, and defeated The Citadel 15 to 3. Prospects for next year are none too favor- able with the loss of three of the four regulars, but it is hoped that men will be developed to fill these positions. Page One Hundred Fifty-four INTRAMURAL SPORTS At righl is the senior touch football ti ' .im. which lost but one gjmc and closed the season in a tic for first place with the juniors. Hogg. Dale, and Shore were consistently outstanding for the seniors. Below the senior team is the mighty junior aggregation, which also lost only one game, to give them an even break with the seniors for the season. Individual stars were Yarborough. Thomas, and Terrell. In basketball the seniors again tied for first place with a strong junior quintette, each team defeating the other once. F-or the seniors. Johnson. Barnwell, and McReynolds were high scorers, while Carter and Terrell shone for the juniors. Shown below are. left to right, the junior and senior basketball teams. The juniors took undisputed lead in the intramural race by sweeping the bowling tournament without a loss, while the best the seniors could do was third place. At the bottom right is shown the senior volleyball and baseball teams which won both these sports to clinch the championship. Holt Barnwell served as class director for the seniors, and won the individual scoring trophy for his fine work. ■f .O ' wT t 9 fJ FRATEBNITV SPORTS At the top left is the Phi Dclt football team which went through the season without a single defeat in seven games. Although they never played the Kappa Sigs, they were in first place in football for the fourth straight year. Second picture is the Kappa Sigma football tearn, likewise undefeated in seven encounters, which closed the season in a tie for first place. Hogg and Yar- borough furnished the Sigmas with a combination which the other fraternities found invincible. At left is the Pi Kappa Phi basketball team which went through the tournament undefeated. Opening the season as a dark horse, the Pi Kaps played steady ball to come through in a whirlwind finish and over- come all opposition easily. Their only close game was with the Phi Gams, but the Pi Kaps stayed ahead to win by two points. Featuring the speedy running of senior Karl Jonas and freshman Bill Lacy, the Kappa Sigmas annexed their second championship of the year by winning the interfraternity track meet. Most of their points were won in the dashes and the hurdles, where they built up a lead which the others were unable to overcome. ¥ 3 I -tt? !«V ' i . .... fefr :. tr- ? Sink, and Shelton were outstanding for the victors, and the rest of the team was almost as consistent. The bowling tournament ended in a tie this year between the Kappa Sigmas and Sigma Phi Epsilon. both teams losing only one match. Hill and Scott Cooper were the high men for the Sigmas. who were beaten only by the Phi Gams. The S. P. E. ' s rolled over all comers until the final match, when they were overwhelmed by the Kappa Sigs. This victory put the Sigmas out in front for the interfraternity trophy, followed closely by the Phi Delts and further back the Phi Gams and S. P. E. ' s. At right is Mack Otts and Jay Bolin. who com- posed the Phi Gam horseshoe team and won the com- petition. Their victory brought the Fijis up to the leaders in the race, so that at this point the cup could be won by any one of four fraternities. The Phi Delts captured the cup last year and another victory would give them two laps on the three neces- sary for permanent possession. fW SL FRESHMAN SPORTS FOOTBALL Davidson ' s frosh football team, although not as strong as teams of the last two years, proved fast and clever, coming out on top of more than half their games. In the backfield Earle Bethea and Mac Bruce will prove valuable to future Wild- cat teams, as well as Williams, O ' Hara, Burke. Grimsley. and Gwynn in the line. BASKETBALL Handicapped by lack of reserves, the freshmen were never able to win con- sistently, but gave good accounts of them- selves in every game, winning a fair share. Pat Williams proved to be the frosh top scorer, and was aided on the floor by Mac Bruce and MacWilliams. These men along with Bob Currie should prove valuable to the varsity next year. WRESTLING Made up of inexperienced men. the frosh grapplers. showing the old Davidson fight- ing spirit, gave several teams quite a scare. George Council and Bill Simmons proved to be the mainstays of the team, winning consistently, and should step into varsity spots next year. Dick O ' Hair. winning most of his matches, showed promise and along with Bill Grimsley should also be good varsity material. TENNIS Davidson ' s frosh racqueteers appear to be one of the best freshman teams of the year. Having lost but one match to date and that by 4 to 3. they seem to be headed for a clean record in the remaining matches. Buck Archer, playing number one is sure of varsity competition next year along with Gene Head and Luther Martin. FRESHMAN SI ' LIRTS TRACK Although not viclorinus lo date, the trosh li.iw fim- possibilities ol .i strong ti ' .ini ' i)i!i- thiir wi-.ikniss is in tiie clis tancis. the dashes and hurdles are well taken care of by Bill l.acy. Harle Bethea is a sure winner in the high jump. These two men along with Pat Williams, and Dick O Hair will be valuable assets to next year ' s varsity. UULF The treshman golt team, although hav- ing lost their first match to (Central High, show promise of a strong team. Bum- bargcr. Gaither, Davis, and Upchurch. all shooting low scores will be fine material for varsity duty next year, and with a little more practice should be victorious in the majority oi their remaining matches. BASEBALL With power at the plate but weak on defense, the Kittens have lost their first four starts, but with more practice should register several wins. Major and Neisler have been handling the hurling, with heavy hitting Earle Bethea behind the plate. Buck Fuqua in the outfield and Ed Cole on shortstop should be heard from on next year ' s varsity. SOCCER Although Soccer is both a varsity and freshman sport, it is rated as a minor sport on the Davidson campus, and the partici- pants do not receive varsity awards. This year the soccer men had an even break in their matches, and showed up well against strong opposition from Duke and other schools where soccer is strongly empha- sized. John Farrior captained the hooters through the 1940 season. ,; . i- :-:f mJ :;;C ' 4 ' : ' i cd{ ' ' A In the circle at left is Ray McKinlcy. featured drummer man for Will Bradley, and a general favorite with the Davidson students.
