These are much too intangible to be set forth in pictures; but keep them in mind, and as you peruse these pages, may you be reminded of vour best days at Davidson. Has not the doubting cynic scoffed at us In piercing words: Ex nihilo nihil : ' But we can hold a flaming torch on high. And cast a flickering light across the foam: Our lamp, tho ' dim amid the roaring waves, May guide a weary traveler safely home. II Supposed thinkers we! And who are we 1 o boast of wisdom and of solemn thought We may not hope lo le.ul the troubled world To distant Ix-ights. which long all men have sought. But we can lake the broken harps ot lile. That those whci ' ve gone before have left behind For us to mend, and strive to make each string Vibrate in harmony to rouse mankind. Ill Supposed doers we! And who are we To act without a first direct command. ' ' May God. who rules our hopeful destiny. Speak now that we may hear and understand. Then we will rise from beds of restful ease. To heed that warning, faint but sharp and clear: To take our places in the ranks of men: To work, unceasing, through each coming year. — David A. Further, this body set out to eliminate all class friction and to secure a more efficient enforcement of the Honor System. Its scope of jurisdiction has since increased to include the supervision of the Court of Control of Freshmen and the embodiment of principles which are most conducive to the welfare of student government. Each year the Council introduces different measures and amendments to the Constitution of the Student Body as it sees fit. The most important amendments passed in the past few years by the Council, and subsequently by the entire Student Body, are one setting up a Point System, whereby no senior is allowed to have more than 40 points, thus distribut- ing offices on the campus more equally; one which set up an Elections Board to control all student body elections; and one which states that the Vice-Presi- dents and Secretary-Treasurer of the Student Body, upon their election, automatically are elected to the Student Council. These latter two were passed in the Spring semester of this year. Membership of the Council, up until the passage of the last aforementioned amendment, has included the President of the Student Body, the Presidents of the three upper classes, and five members of the Senior class, three of the Junior class, and two of the Sopho- more class. By the action of this amendment, each class ' s representatives are decreased by one in order to allow for the Vice-Presidents and Secretary-Treasurer of the Student Body. These additional representatives are elected by secret ballot in their respective classes. The Student Council is an organization increasing yearly in esteem, and is recognized as a group which holds the chief interest of the student body as its guiding principle. 1 3 C o i - v4v - !.i ■I s- . A. at Davidson continues to be the student ' s closest contact with active Chris- tian service. Each year a wider range of oppor- tunity is opened up. and the student Christian association has endeavored to meet tliese chal- lenges as they have appeared. With its motto — One cannot be religious without doing religion — the Y. M. C. A. has carried its work into every phase of student activity, its services being so many and varied that only a few of the most important can be mentioned. The Y has charge of the Sunday evening Vesper services, importing many speak- ers of note as well as faculty members, all well received by the student body. The Y also sends out deputations, conducts classes in various subjects, holds discussion groups, promotes prayer meetings, is active in social work in the town of Davidson, and performs many other similar functions which bring the spiritual life of the campus to a higher plane. There are two governing boards of the Y : The Board of Control and the Cabinet. The Board of Control has charge of the business and financial functions of the organization, and the Cabinet assumes the duties of carrying on the actual labor. Nor should the diligent. CDm- prehensivc service of the general secretary be forgotten, for his is a major role in the organi- zation ' s plan. Chosen each year by the Board of Control, the secretary is an alumnus of Davidson. This year ' s secretary is Sherrard Rice. He has had a fine year, and his contagious enthusiasm for Christian service has met a fine response from the student body. u Q o o l-H H z W ■!P l JACK HOLLAND. EDITOR-IN Holland The first issue of QuiPS AND CRANKS, yearbook of the Senior Class, was pubHshed on the Davidson campus in 1895, and it has appeared annually since that date with only a few interruptions. Each year it has presented a cross-section of the life of the average senior at Davidson. This year, the purpose of QuiPS AND Cranks has been to make this cross-section a little more vivid with the theme of Life at Davidson. The book is offered with the hope that through the many informal pictures every senior may retain a reminder of his happiest days here. It serves as the only means to give students, faculty, and also out- siders an extremely natural picture of Davidson. Every year new ideas arc brought forth on our campus, but there is ever one prevailing element, an mtangible something known to every Davidsonian as the Wildcat spirit. All of the year ' s activities — fraternities, both honorary and social, athletics, pub- lications, organizations for student body administra- tion, and many others — are permeated with this quality. The QuiPS AND CRANKS staff would be unsatisfied if it did not feel that there is a proper embellishment of this spirit in our book. For the year 1939-40 the council was composed of Neal Scott, president: Warren Ludlam. first vice-president; Richard Kenyon, second vice-president: Drury Thompson, secretary: Robert Ramsey, treasurer: and William Loftin, debate manager. Among other duties, the Forensic Council works out a budget and a schedule of debates for the year, acts as host to visting debating teams, selects the freshman debating team, and conducts a tournament for this group. Three trips are made each year by the debating team, with two members of the council going on each trip. First they go west- ward to Centre College. University of Louis- ville. Oberlin. DAVIDSON SYMPHONIC BAND The highlight of Davidson ' s musical year was the Second Annual Musical Festival, pre- sented on February 10-12, under the direc- tion of Prof. James Christian Pfohl. This year the festival extended its scope and repre- sentatives of four colleges and two universi- ties took part in the concert series. Organiza- tions heard were: The Michigan Little Sym- phony, under the direction of Thor Johnson: the Queens Choral Club under the direc- tion of Miss Grace Robinson: the Davidson Festival Chorus of approximately eighty voices: and our own three organizations, the Davidson Symphonic Band, the Davidson- Queens Little Symphony, and the Davidson Glee Club. In addition to these organizations a number of soloists took part. The climax of the festival was the Sunday afternoon con- cert, which was the oratorio. Elijah. by Mendelssohn. This year another innovation was intro- duced to Davidson ' s musical world. An hon- orary musical fraternity was organized. Beta Gamma Phi was the name chosen, and Harper Beall was selected as President. At the present it is a local group, but petitions arc being drawn up in attempts to make it a chapter of a national music fraternity. This organi- zation was responsible for four concerts dur- ing the year. One of the most popular heard on the campus in recent years was on Decem- ber 4th. when they presented the Platoff Don Cossack choir. Our own Symphonic Band opened their season formally on the evening of November 3rd. during the Homecoming Week-end. This LITTLE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA was lollowcd the next morning with another conc.Tt by the band together with the Glej Club tor the graduates who were returning on Saturday for the Homecoming festivities. On Friday. November 17th. the Sym- phonic Band gave another concert, this time in collaboration with the musical organiza- tions of Queens-Chicora College of Charlotte. During the month of December, most of the musical work was taken up with prepara- tions of the annual ' . M. C. A. Christmas Vespers Program. All three of the musical organizations took part in this program. which was devel oped around the usual theme of the birth of our Lord. This year, instead of attempting to have a Little Symphony composed of Davidson students alone. Professor Pfohl organized a Davidson -Queens Little Symphony. They have performed in Charlotte over the radio and at several benefit concerts. The Music Department has made rapid strides in the past few years, and now holds a high position on the campus. More than two hundred and fifty take part in some phase of music on the campus, a continued interest in music by the student body thus being warranted. Prof. James Christian Pfohl, Prof. Thane McDonald, and Mr. Warren P. Babcock comprise a young and active musical faculty, whose efforts in the promotion of fine music on the Davidson campus are unstinted. £ J. GLEE CLUB Thank .McUoxalp. Director Harper Beall, President Rov Si-nER. Accompanist This year ' s Davidson College Varsity Glee Club, under the leader- ship of Thane McDonald, has a limited membership of thirty voices. The Glee Club has served regularly througout the year as the Vesper Choir for the College Sunday Vesper Services, at which time the finest of choral and sacred music is presented. On three occasions the Glee Club, in collaboration with other musical groups, presented an entirely musical Vesper Service. Also during the year several con- certs were made in different cities throughout North and South Caro- lina together with appearances at other colleges. The officers of the Club this year are: President Harper Beall, Vice-President Jim McDonald, and Secretary Jim Crook. MM III i - Av - . -«V . w. «  r X ri   •« 4 l . - W 1«. ! State 18 — Davidson 14 Davidson ' s untried Wildcats opened the season like veterans and barely dropped a one- touchdown decision to a highly-touted State eleven. All five touch- downs came as a result of passes, neither team being able to penetrate the other ' s wall consistently. The Wolves tallied twice in the first half on long passes after Davidson ' s lighter line threw back their running attack time after time. Early in the third quarter Sharpe ' s passes clicked for two rapid touchdowns, and on both occasions Yoder converted to give the Cats a two- point lead. In the fourth quarter a long State pass connected again for the final score of the game. With seconds to play Davidson ran and passed their way deep into State territory, and the final gun was the Wolves ' margin of victory. Duke 26 — Davidson 6 In Davidson ' s first home game, against the mighty Rose Bowl Dukes, the Wildcats achieved the impossible by being Kiillil Uuilril Bmixsox Uft Tackle iIh- (irsl team to cross ihf IMiu ' Devils ' yoni line since 19 7, wiili the exception ol Southern Clalilornia in llie Rose Bowl. Duke led at the half by the slender marj in of 7 6. after Hackney jiulletl dt)un Sharpe ' s pass for the Chats ' lone tally. Held to nearly even terms during the first half, the Blue Devils ' unlimited reserve strenijth and superior weight enableil them to force their way tiirough l avid son ' s line for three more scores. BoLix Half Back SiiAtrE Quarter Back Mashbl ' rn Varsity Manager IjlJ DDEN Equipment Manager FuRMAN 1 5 — Davidson Hampered by numerous injuries, Davidson dropped its fifth straight in a hcartbreakcr to Furman ' s Purple Hurri- cane. Led by Shetley and Martin. Furman was able to push over two touchdowns in the third quarter to gain a comfortable lead, which was cinched in the closing minutes by a safety. The lack of several regulars in the line-up was keenly felt, and played no small part in the Cats ' defeat. Their only real scoring threat came in the second half when Spencer and were barely bested in a hard-fought game. A driving rain and muddy field prevented accurate passes — the Wildcats ' most potent offensive weapon. In the opening minutes Sharpe attempted to punt from his own goal line, but failed to get the slippery ball away. Tipton, hard-charging Cadet tackle, broke thru to block the kick and give his team the only score of the game. South Carolina 7 — Davidson In their fourth game of the season Davidson was still unable to break into the winning column, although they were very narrowly defeated by the Game- cocks. For three quarters Sharpe and Jay Bolin carried the attack repeatedly into South Carolina territory, but late in the fourth period the Wildcats were over- powered by superior weight: and a sus- tained South Carolina drive ended in a touchdown. Bad breaks continued to fol- low the Cats in this game, though several sophomores gave evidence of great poten- tial ability and future powerful teams. vvorkt ' tl (Ih ' b.ill (i il)i ' I iiini.ui 1 I v.inl line. Davidson compUtilv outplayed a smaller Citadel eleven lo cam their first victory of the season. The C ais lost no time in setting to wiirk with a powcrtul ollense. which netted a touchdown earlv in the first (.jiiarter. C ' itadel managed to even the count in the second period, but Yoder, Sharpe. ant! Jav Bolin rapidly chalked up three nmre touchdowns to put tlie game away. In the closing minutes Cap- tain Richmond broke through to smear Edwards behind his own goal line and give the Cats two more score points. Both teams were considerably handicapped by a cold wind and heavy rain. North Carolina 32 — Davidson Davidson suffered its worst defeat of the season at the hands of Carolina ' s undefeated Tar Heels. Faced by a larger and more experienced eleven, the Cats were at a loss before long-range passes and shifty power plays. Bahnson and Yoder starred defensively, but Carolina ' s heavy line kept the Davidson line almost at a standstill. Spencer made several good runs for the Cats, yet was never quite able to maneuver the ball into scoring position. Erskinh 6 — Davidson 32 Coach McEver alternated two teams against a hopelessly outplayed Erskine eleven, and the result was an impressive victory. The outcome was never in doubt from the opening whistle, for Yoder, Spencer, and Bolin combined to score once in every quarter, and twice in the second on Sharpe ' s accurate passes. lirskine ' s lone score came in the first period when a short forward pass and a double lateral netted 67 yards and a touchdown. I he David- son plays wc:)rked consistently for long gains, though Erskine was considerably liampered by numert:)us injuries and a much lighter scjuatl than usual. Wake Forest 47 — Davidson 7 The Big Five ' s oldest rivalry, between Wake Forest and Davidson, vv as ended this year with an overwhelming victory for the Deacons. Boasting a tremendously powerful running attack and a crashing fullback. Wake rolled over the smaller Cats on sheer strength. Fumbles and the almost uncanny punting of Mayberry threw Davidson back to their own goal line time after time, from where Polanski was usually able to crash over. Tubby Hand thrilled Wildcat supporters by a beautiful 72-yard run through the entire Deacon team for Davidson ' s only score. Bill Bolin and George Richmond, lettermen for three years, ended their football careers with this game and both turned in stellar performances. BASK EIBALL ' :S - BASKETBALL With only three capable performers returning from last year ' s fast-moving quintet. Coach Shepard had his hands full to develop a winning team. The result of his work was a credit not only to Coach Shepard ' s ability, but also an attribute to Captain Footsie Cowan — who paced his team through the season: and final standings proved he was outscored in the Southern Conference only by All- American George Glamack of North Carolina. Captain-elect Jimmy Hogg was second in team scoring for the year with 177 points and placed sixth in the Conference ratings. Benny Harrison, Hayseed Thomas, and Melvin Means, all seniors, combined into a dependable trio which was often outscored but never outfought during the season. The loss of these three, along with Cowan, will be a serious handicap to building a winning combination in 1941. Early in the season the Cats seemed destined for the tournament, but a mid-season slump was enough to ruin all hopes of a champion- ship team. Cowan and Hogg were the only two consistent scoring threats, and when they failed to click, the Wildcats lost. Harrison in particular deserves credit for his great defensive work, but men Cowan, Captain Masiok, Manager first row: Lucas, Thomas, Capt. Cu«an, Hu.,.„ ilAKKi-uN. . lA. A,,tK Ma Second row: Coach Shepard, Means, Taylor, Ficklen, Shore, McLeod. were never available who could fill the shoes of Iverson, Hicks, and Tice. In the two final games of the year the Cats showed what they could really do by overwhelming South Carolina, 51-38. and Furman University, 46-35. Earlier in the season they defeated Citadel, Guil- ford, V. M. I., and several others. Against their Big Five opponents, however, the Cats seemed powerless, and one victory over State was the best they could do in eight starts against Duke, Carolina, Wake Forest, and State. Individual honors for the year go unanimously to Captain Footsie Cowan, who set a new scoring record against Citadel of 3 1 points. This is the highest individual score ever made in the Davidson gymnasium — falling only one point short of Jim Waller ' s Southern Conference record. Despite the loss of four lettermen, the prospects for next year are fairly bright, Captain Hogg will be the only senior letterman, while Yarborough, Simonds. McLeod, Lucas, Bell, and Sink, all rising juniors, will be fighting for positions. From the fresh- men come several excellent players, and the result should be a fast. sharp-shooting, close-guarding outfit, though lack of height will be a great handicap. T C K 1 ji I TRACK Although the Davidson cindcrmen have as yet participated in only two meets, they have won both, and appear to be the strongest team in recent years. Captain Bob Kellogg has led his team on both occasions to victories over Maryville College and V. P. I. with ten and eight points respectively. His distance running has been the team ' s greatest asset, and naturally he is being counted on heavily for the remaining meets. Against Maryville the Cats took first place in all events except the high jump and the relay, the former being won by Etheridge on a six-foot jump and the latter was forfeited by Davidson. Captain Kellogg romped home to easy victories in both the mile and the half-mile, while Spencer likewise took first place in the javelin and the broad jump, and Blanton Williamson won two firsts in the hurdles. Sophomores Blanton Williamson and Archie Taylor have proved the year ' s sen- sations, Williamson in particular being the most improved runner on the squad. Coach Pete Whittle had found himself knee-deep in sprinters for the first time — White. Williams. Taylor. Spencer, and others — his only trouble in that division seems to be picking the fastest men. In the field events there is likewise a surplus of material with Spencer, Cowan, Strand- witz. Brenizer, and Shannon showing up particularly well. There is likewise no lack of weight men. Yoder. Knoeller. and Freeze arc handling the discuss, with Bell and Knoeller putting the shot. Probably the weakest points of the team arc the middle distances, but several men have shown great improvement. The prospects for next year arc equally bright, as Gam- mon. Kellogg, Black, and Harbin will be the only men lost through graduation. If Coach Whittle can develop one or two good distance men, Davidson should have the best team in its history in 1941. Equipped with an unusually fast infield and a capable six-man pitching staff, the Cats are fairly sure to win almost all their remaining games. In the opener it was Clemson all the way by a 15-2 score — with the Cadets pounding three Davidson pitchers for 15 safeties. The next game, however, was a very different story, for Captain Hayseed Thomas scattered eight Erskine hits while his teammates pounded out ten runs for a 10-6 victory. The first home game saw Davidson ' s sophomore Ed Lucas turn in a brilliant pitching performance, but he was overshadowed by Vaughn of Rich- mond, and the Cats lost their second game of the season. The Wildcats then proceeded to two straight wins over Colby College and The Citadel on the strength of good pitching by McLean, C.n i I I ,Si|IP.- RD Thomas, ami Lucas. In the next thrcf yamcs the Cats suflcrcd a complete reversal of form and were defeated by Duke. WofTord. and F-urman. On all three occasions Davidson showed lack, of hitting pc)wer, and their field- ing ability couldn ' t iiold down their oppon- ents enough for a victory. At present there are twelve games remaining on the schedule, and the C ats should have more than an even break for the season with ease. 1 homas. Owens, and Llogg. has fielded almost crrorlessly to date and compares favorably with any team in the conference. 1 he outfield presents (xiach Shepard with his major prob- lem, though Hunter. Verner. Niven. and Fitz- gerald have all been playing good ball. The loss of hitters like Hand. Hicks, and Steere made a great gap to be filled in the outfield as well as in hitting, but if the team develops as expected there should be no lack of batting power at the season ' s end. At present there arc four sophomores and three juniors in the start- ing line-up. so prospects are very bright for next year. lISkHMi CAPT. JI.M THOM. i HUNTCR McIntyre, Abels, Moore, Capt. .McFAintN. Parr i;; Manager Kunz, Wilson, Sain, Crane, Freeze, Bahnson, Coa Capt. McFadyen in action WRESTLING The Wildcat wrestling team, an unknown quality except for one or two men, carried out a hard six-match schedule and were victorious in only one meet. The work of Captain Graham McFadyen was the highlight of the season, as he opened the year with a Championship in the Southern Conference tournament and was unde- feated until the final meet with Maryland, when he was narrowly defeated. The Cats were downed by more experienced teams from Duke. N. C. State. V. P. I., Carolina, and Maryland, but won a fairly close decision from the Win- ston-Salem Y. M. C. A. In the lighter weights Abels. Moore, and McIntyre all had good records for the season, while big Ed Hipp gave a good account of himself in the heavyweight class. The other weights were filled by inexperienced men. and the gaps left by graduation were never adequately filled. This was Coach Chet Chapman ' s first year as wrestling coach, but with several returning lettermen he is looking forward to a successful season in 1941. Captain- Elect Abels, Moore, and Parrish will be counted on heavily in the lower divisions, while a year ' s experience should make Bahnson, Freeze, and Hipp more valuable than ever. TENNIS Davidsons varsity racquet- wicldcrs of 1940 have so far given evidences of duplicating the record of last year ' s crack team, if their first seven matches arc a fair sample of what they can accomplish. The tennis team opened the season by defeating the Michigan State team 6-1 at the Myers Park Country Club in Charlotte. Next the netmen traveled to Georgia, where they played the University of Georgia. Emory University, and Georgia Tech. defeating all three opponents. Georgia and Emory were both beaten by the score of 5-2. and Tech by 4-2. It is the second year that the well known Emory nctmcn have been defeated by Davidson. Next the Wildcats trounced the Citadel team 9-0 on the home courts, and in Charlotte they defeated Colgate 6-1 and tied Kalamazoo 4-4. Though undefeated, the netmen still have a number of meets as the annual goes to press. Their remaining schedule is: Presbyterian College at Clinton. S. C. Washington and I.ee at Charlotte. University of Mississippi at Charlotte. Pennsylvania at Philadelphia. N. C. State at Davidson. W. and L. at Lexington. Va. University of Virginia at Charlottesville. Va. The tennis team this year is co- captained by Rea Tenncy and Lock Hunter, two of the four lettermen from last year. The other veterans are Juniors Dick Shore and Billy Turner. Miller Sproull and B. B. Plyler com plcic the squad. The line-up is usually Turner. Tenney. Hunter. Shore. Sproull. and Plyler. Leading the race for individual honors are Tenney and Hunter, both of whom have won seven matches and lost none. In second place is Shore, who has won six and lost none. Tenney and Shore lead the doubles honor with six wins and no losses. Hunter and Turner are second with three victories and two defeats. Co-Cai ' t. Tennev Co-Capt. Hixi PEGRAM, Co-Captain Wright GOLF Possess ing one of the best golf teams of recent years, Davidson has won four matches to date, and lost five to more experienced teams. The Cats placed fifth in the Southern Intercollegiate Tourna- ment, which is excellent for a team without good golfing facilities. Three men have been playing regularly with Wright and Abels alternating in the fourth position. Captain Pegram and Granville Sharpe have both shot con- sistently low scores in every match. In the opening engagement with Hampden-Sydney the Wildcats were narrowly defeated, 9 ' 7 -8)2 . They came back the next day. however, to easily overwhelm Boston College. 7 i- i. During Spring Holidays the team traveled south and were beaten rather badly by the Universities of Georgia. Florida, and South Carolina. On their return they immediately pro- ceeded to trounce Catawba, 1 1 ' -6) : . and shut out Kalamazoo. 18-0. Against a highly-touted Duke team the Wildcats were barely beaten. 1 1 ' 1 - 6 ' 1 . and with their hardest matches of the season behind them, they stand a good chance of winning all their remaining engagements. Prospects are fairly bright for next year with both Sharpe and Abels returning, while sev- eral freshmen have shown exceptional promise, and the remaining places should be well taken care of. CROSS-COUNTRY ,;.„ul r.nc. L..A, .. W 1 WILDCAT STARS P FOOTBALL Davidson ' s freshman football team, under the guidance of Coach Crowell Little, had one of the best rounded teams of recent years — though probably not as good as last year ' s fine outfit. In the line Captain Herb Rainey was the outstanding man and seems to be slated for a varsity berth. Several good backs. Fred- erick, Maloney, Ehly, Lacy, and Sprunt, all played well and will be counted on heavily next season. CROSS-COUNTRY The freshman cross-country team, possess- ing only one outstanding runner, had a much poorer season than usual. Rufus Nimmons was the only consistent point winner for the team and placed first or second in every meet. Belk. Ansley. and McLean all showed up well and will be needed greatly next fall as prac- tically all the varsity is graduating. TENNIS— Manager Vi Ehlv, Sutton. BASKETBALL Though not an excellent team, the Wild- kittens were a smooth-working outfit which emphasized teamwork rather than individual stars. Coach Little is to be commended for developing several players who can be counted on for varsity service. Keffer and Frederick are slated for first team positions, while Belk. Maloney. and Grossc should all see some service. WRESTLING The freshman wrestling team, always an athletic question mark, was even more an unknown quality this year than usual. Ashby Dick and Conyers were the most consistent winners and should sec some action next year, while Parks, Murray. Busby, and Brinson showed considerable promise in the various divisions. ' id colds is to use a few drops of Vicks Va-tro-nol. This treatment is effective because Va-tro-nol is ACTIVE MEDICA- TION (containing several essential relief-giving agents plus ephedrine) expressly designed for the nose and upper throat. (I) It actively penetrates cold- clogged nasal passages and (2) it actively helps to remove conges- tion that causes so much of the misery. For won- derful relief, just put a few drops of Va-tro-nol up each nostril. — VICKS — ' VATRONOL ROSTER OF STUDENTS S. C. Pearcc Montreal. N. C. B. J. Phillips, Jr 4054 Post St.. Jacksonville.
