PREFACE From time immemorial man has fought to conquer the physical and intellectual forces surrounding him. He has ventured forth into the realm of the unknown to acquire for himself a better mode of living, a personal satisfaction, aid for his fellows. Such desires caused him to master one of nature ' s most violent powers, the sea, to make it serve his wishes and do his bidding. Man ' s increased use of the sea and his greater benefits from it did not grow and augment of their own accord; the progress points directly to the undaunted purpose and never dying attempts of those men who saw before them untold opportunity. In another realm did the same inner spirit, turned toward educational endeavor, result in advancement and progress in the development of the mind. The Christian educational institutions of the present stand as a tangible symbol of the work of certain Christian men who, spurred on by an eternal desire for achievement and perfection, saw into the future and visualized a time of hope and promise for all.
