Involved students have worked hard in solving situations with which other schools are still working. The stu- dents who have volunteered for Fundamental School expressed a willingness to work harder, study more, and exhibit better behavior in order to get a better education. School spirit, involvement, and cooperation are the qualities that prove that CARTER HAS A GOOD THING GOING. Three of Carter's clubs raised money for the needy by participating in different activities involving dancing. The Key Club and Creative Writing Club sponsored sock hops, and charged a can of food for admission. The food was given to various families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Several DECA Club members had a good time raising money for Muscular Dystrophy by participating in a dance marathon. They are the students of Carter High School. The laeulty and staff of Carter work to shape responsible, well-rounded youth. Dlane Robertson - Edltor same who open doors to a better future for the Dr. Jim Hughey came to us from Greiner Middle School. He was asked to accept the position of Principal at Carter High which hc, fortunately, accepted. Principal is defined as one who shows guidance, leadership, cure, a sense of humor, and toleration and patience at a super-human level. He has managed these qualities like a pro, but our Dr. Hughey has never done what is expected of him, he has always done more. This man tackled a totally new sci of responsibilities, a completely new group of employees and students, and because of his success, has entered the hearts of everyone at Carter High School. Our new trail-boss is most assuredly congratulated and appreciated whether verbally or just in our souls. Carter is proud of you, .lamcs Hugheyl 192 Faculty i E t I Principal of the ''school-within-a-school - Leonard Trapp. This is Mr. Trapp's second year to be associate principal of Carter High School. Through his observations, understanding, quick-thinking, and knowlc-dgfr. he built the Funda- mental School, supported it, and promoted it. We thank you Mr. Trapp for your fl:-votion to Carter. Diane Robertson Faculty 193 At Carter, wc have three assistant principals. The first of these is Robert Parrish. Dean of Instruction. His duties are planning the curriculum and organizing the teachers. as wcll as enforcing stu- dcnt discipline. The last of our trio. Melvin Traylor. definitely is not to be consid- ered the least. Mr. Traylor is mainly involvcd with student rela- tions. He has an active part in various organizations, though he also deals with thc students and their individual problems. 194 Faculty Edward Price is thc second of our team of three. His main con- cern is seeing the students get thc best education possible. Hc- accomplishes this by apprc-bending thc strays and putting them in their places. or rt-moving the problems in order to keep them from disturbing others. .lohn A. TROIANSAND LEOPARDS TROUNCED The third straight victory of the year came when the Cow- boys met the Madison Trojans. After a slow start the motor fired up, and the Big Wag got rolling. Wagoner then pro- ceeded to help the Cowboys down the Trojans 28-7. Defense again played an important role in the devastating win over the Trojans. Cowboy linebackers Leonard Anderson, Greg Chapman, and Damon Crow kept the Trojan running game shut down all night. This left the Trojans with no other choice than to try the air. This tactic left way for Barry Sam- ples, Dalton Jackson, and Jimmy Toleston to each pull down an interception. After the Cowboys pulled out a great comeback victory over the Roosevelt Mustangs they took on the Adamson Leopards at Sprague Field. The first two times the Cowboys snapped the hall, William Marlowe scored two touchdowns on runs of 50 and 44 yards. Next, Victor Jackson scored on a 41 yard pass from David Roberson, and not too long after that Dalton Jack- son scored on a one yard run to close the first half. ln the second half Anthony Hamilton scored on a 21 yard pass from Roberson. Then Charles Wagoner broke loose on a 75 yard touchdown run. Victor Jackson intercepted a Leopard pass and went 4-3 yards for the game ending touchdown. Final score 48-9. Martin Cantu said it best when he said, lt was a track meet on the gridiron. Follow me, we're almost there. . t 5' H KECK AND CO. DISPROVE 'VELT DOUBTERS Seven oints down and time runnin out in the fourth P S quarter. The Cowboys were in a pretty rugged situation. However, they came through with a 21 point rally in the last six min- utes to make their district record 4--0. The Cowboys entered the field of play in their newly acquired Big Red uniforms and jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the half. Charles Wagoner scored first on an eight yard run and then David Roberson scored on a three yard keeper with David Hines adding both extra points. After falling behind 21-14 to a NEW Mustang team, the Cowboys showed their heart and came storming back. First, a 93-yard kickoff return by do-it-all Victor Jackson, then a one yard plunge by Wagoner put the Pokes ahead. After Antoine Arbuckle intercepted a Mustang pass, William Marlowe scored on a one yard run with David Hines popping the cork to make it 35-21. It was a great day at the Cotton Bowl for the Pokes, and the first step in their conquest for the district 12-AAAA Championship. The defense was led by punishing play' from Captain Edward Denwitty and the always sparkling Damon Holy'wood Crow. The Cowboy offense was yery present that night. They racked up 418 yards. Charles Wagoner put the first Cowboy touchdown on the scoreboard by taking the ball in from three yards out. Wagoner scored again just before halftime. taking the ball around end for a five yard touchdown. The second half turned out to he one of big plays. Anthony Hamilton caught a cross field pass from David Roberson, dodging Sunset players while he raced 64- yards to the end zone. The next big play was a 74 yard run by' William Marlowe for the fourth Carter touch- down. Wagoner added another, his third of the night, when Rodney Henderson scored the Pokcs won 38-7. wuusumenn Wvlliiiv. 'WW 51'-I an smash in '23 no 5 H Six chose stick . . . Six chose spray . . . AMe,iCAn'ics 28, POKES TAKE T0 THE AIR It was Homecoming for the Carter Cowboys, and what a Homecoming it was. The Cowboys came home with a 41-7 victory over the Kimball Knights. The game was marred by penalties, but in between the whistles signaling infrac- tions, were whistles signaling Cowboy touchdowns. The Pokes started the NIGHT off right when David Roberson threw a 48 yard touchdown pass to Anthony Hamilton for a quick 80 Cowboy lead. After the Knights scored to bring their score within one point, Hamilton came up with a deflected 18 yard pass, and turned it into an 18 yard touchdown pass. QB Davis Roberson scored himself on a three yard run, and later threw his last of three TD passes to Victor Jackson, to make the score 29-7, Charles Wag- oner scorcd next on a three yard blast, then Greg Chapman intercepted a Knight pass and took it 35 yards to pay dirt. Other scoring was done by David Hines who had three extra points, and Charles Wagoner, who had a two point conversion. It was another great victory for the Cow- boys, and left them with an undefeated 60 district record. ...KN . ' K Wiiift- s fi at f- Roberson showing All-District form. Both teams went into the game undefeated which set the stage for an exciting and crowded night at Sprague Field. The Cowboys fell behind early when SOC took the opening kick-off to the two, and scored to give SOC a 7-0 lead. Next, the angered Pokes scored on a one yard run by Charles Wagoner followed by a David Hines' extra point to tie the game 7-7. On the Cowboys next possession, they again scored. Again it was Wagoner. His 35 yard run put the Cowboys ahead I4-7. The most exciting play of the game came in the final seconds of the first half as Antoine Arbuckle caught a double reverse touchdown pass from Roberson to make the half time score 20-7. The second half was all Carter defense, except for ai last minute touchdown by SOC to end the game and SOC's chances at 20-7. The temperature was a pleasing 680, and there were 14-,635 people at Texas Stadium to watch the second ranked Owls of Garland get completely out-classed by an underdog Carter Cowboy team whose secret was unification and God's blessing. The Cowboys were led by a hellacious defense that held the Owls to just 34 yards of total offense. The Pokes were all over the Owl offense all night long. It was quite obvious that the Carter fans were more than satisfied for while our defense was sacking their quarterback and slamming their offensive line in the turfg the crowd was chanting Herkie's a tur- key . The Cowboy offense wasn't too shabby either. They scored two touchdowns in the first quarter which proved to be enough to win. The first touchdown came on a 10 yard by QB David Roberson, and the second a 43 yard bomb to Anthony Hamilton. It was a night to remember: the night the Cowboys claimed the State 4-A Regional Championship. -v-4 t svjgei-t. , Nw A N I . , f rs- 'A ' ' 1 Give us back our sack lunch.
