His enthusiasm and closeness to the students was felt by all at the pep assemblies, and his respect for the faculty has kept Carter functioning as a total unit. GUYS D DOLL Once again there was a flurry of excitement as the Concert Choir prepared for their annual musical production for 1975, GUYS AND DOLLS. The story is about an unlikely romance between a big-time gambler, SKY MASTERSON, and the pretty, young sergeant of the Save-a-Soul Mission, SARA BROWN. The plot is highlighted by such comical char- acters as gamblers NICELY-NICELY JOHNSON, BENNY SOUTHSTREET, and BIG JULEQ the laughable lovers NATHAN DETROIT and MISS ADELAIDE: and Sara's grandfather, ARVIDE. The prod- uction was choreographed and directed by Mr. Harold Goldfaden and the strange old man in 129. The evenings were enjoyed by cast and audience alike. 204 MUSICAL Now was that 1200 cheesecake and 1500 strudel. or . . . Did he say, 'And Doddie will drag you under'? The rematch was different, however, as Carter eased past the Raiders 22-O. Coach Couch fielded an inex- perienced team with the only offensive returner being that of Steve Gleaves who was instru- mental in the victory. The six foot, 185 pound fullback rambled for 59 yards and one score, as the Raider defense was caught flat- footed trying to retard the Poke rushing attack. Also receiving ground honors was fleet Bo Taylor C48 yardsj and QB Marty Morrison C433 who was good on 4 of 5 pas- ses for the run-oriented Cowboys. Carter's first TD of the year was initiated by the defense as Don Mayberry blocked a Skyline punt and scooped it up for an easy six. Ray Paul's extra point attempt was good and the Cow- boys were off and running. On their next possession Carter scored again. Morrison fooled the Raider defense on a 24-yard keeper to the 19, setting the stage for Gleaves' one yard plunge to paydirt. Paul converted to make the margin 14-0 . Two lost fumbles aborted other Cowboy drives fol- lowing his 2-yard scamper. The two point conversion was success- ful and left the scoreboard as it remained throughout the fourth quarter thanks to a stout defense which turned away three Skyline drives inside the 40. The Raiders generated only 96 yards total offense as the Cowboy defense continued the shutout trend of previous years. COWBOYS RIP BEARCATS, 28-0 SHERMAN, Texas - It was 218 yards and a cloud of dust as Car- ter rushers stampeded past out- manned Sherman to the tune of a 28-O verdict. For the second week in a row Gleaves and Co. ran through, around, and over the opposition, dominating on the field and the scoreboard. The Pokes scored in each period as Marty Morrison tallied on two 1-yard plunges in the first and second quarters followed by Gleaves' 3-yard jaunt in the 3rd. The defense also had a hand in the scoring as linebacker Brad Threatt picked off an errant Bearcat toss and raced 67 yards for a TD in the waning seconds of the contest. Cowboy defenders never gave the home-town fans a chance to applaud, forcing the Bearcats to punt 7 times while allowing only 6 first downs. Mayberry and Threatt led the charge as Carter registered its second shut-out in as many games. Soph. kicker Gerald Mymbs heads state's number one defense . COWBOY FOOTBALL Ray Paul was perfect on four PATs. CARTER FALLS SHORT, 13-6 SAN ANGELO, Texas - Carter's third opponent of the year proved not to be the charm as highly ranked San Angelo edged our heroes 13-6. Holding a 7-point lead late in the final stanza, the Bobcats coughed up the pigskin to a waiting Cowboy defender who eagerly ran it in for an apparent score. The referee had ruled the ball dead, how- ever, and Carter was left empty- handed. The Poke offense was erratic, as QB Morrison was able to con- nect on only 5 of 13 aerials against a tenacious Bobcat defense. Carter's lone score came on a blocked punt and run by speedster Bo Taylor. The Cowboy defense should be given due credit also, having recorded 10 straight shutout quarters before San Angelo scored twice in the second half. Taylor was a bright spot for the Pokes as he rushed for 100 yards in the defensive strug- gle . Carter ended its non-district slate at 2-1. POKES SINK VIKING, 47-0 COBB STADIUM - .The Cowboy offense finally got untracked and exploded for 47 points against the hapless Pinkston Vikings. Carter's first district rival proved no match for the returning champs as the Cowboys ran and passed at will. The defense played superbly as usual, limit- ing Pinkston to a net of only 42 yards including - 5 rushing. Four members of the Poke backfield scored in the first half as Newhouse, Gleaves, Morri- son, and Taylor each ran over from inside the three, building Carter's halftime lead to 27-0. l 212 COWBOY FOOTBALL All-District runner Steve Gleaves heads for daylight. , 5327- 'V . Both teams failed to score in the third quarter, but not so in the fourth. Pat Gomez recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for one TD, followed by New- house's 79-yard ramble to pay- dirt, and a perfect evening ended for the Cowboys as Gerald Good- low returned an interception 30 yards for the final points. Newhouse led all rushers with 121 steps as the Pokes amassed nearly 300 yards in total offense. Mymbs, Threatt, and Mayberry led an inspired defense which never allowed the Vikings to cross the Poke 30 as Carter shut out its 3rd opponent. COWBOYS CAGE LEOPARDS. 30-6 SPRAGUE FIELD - There's nothing like a 17-point third quarter to perk a team up, espe- cially after leading by only six at halftime. Such was the case of the Carter Cowboys against upset-minded Adamson. Leading by the slim margin of six points entering the third period, the Pokes scored four times and won handily, 30-6. The game was actually much closer than the score might indi- cate. Penalties, negative yards rushing, missed opportunities, and that ever-present Cowboy defense kept the Leopards from doing much damage, their lone score coming in the final sec- onds. Steve Gleaves provided offen- sive punch for the Pokes, scoring COWBOY FOOTBALL 213 on a 5-yard toss from Morrison in the first quarter and an 18-yard burst up the middle in the final period. In between, Bo Taylor sliced in from the five, Ray Paul tacked on a 30-yard FG, and Marty Morrison plunged over from one yard out. The defense scored in its fifth straight contest when Gerald Mymbs added two points on a safety. Mymbs and compact Thomas Brady motivated a hard-nosed defense which held Adamson run- ners in check all night. Net result: - 10 yards on the ground. BULLDOGS COLLARED, 56-0 SPRAGUE FIELD - Coach Couch is not one to run up a score, but this time it just couldn't be helped as Carter rolled over North Dallas 56-Zip. The final score was indicative of how events went for the Bulldogs all night. They managed a mea- ger four first downs and 56 yards total offense. The Cowboys, using an assort- ment of running backs, galloped for a season high 322 yards. And if that wasn't enough, QB Morri- son proved he could pass, corn- pleting 6 of 8. Carter controlled the pigskin for most of the eve- ning and was never forced to punt. The Pokes rang up 28 points in each half and if you're interested then here's how it was done: Morrison and Newhouse tallied in the first period on runs of three and 10 yards respectively. Morrison sneaked in from the one, Joe Cork broke loose for a 30-yard TD, and on the ensuing drive Bruce Chambers scampered 24 yards to end the slaughter. Oh yes, the defense also scored - Don Mayberry returned an interception 37 yards. Ray Paul took kicking practice, responding with an 8 for 8 performance in the PAT department. North Dallas threatened only once, that effort coming on a 56-yard pass late in the first half. They failed to capitalize however, and were turned away empty-handed, a status they endured all night. SUNSET FALLS, 21-0 SPRAGUE FIELD - Carter's 4th 12-AAAA foe of the year encountered a problem which the Cowboys' previous opponents had vainly attempted to overcome: how to stop the Poke rushing attack while at the same time trying to crack their heralded defense. The Sunset Bisons were unsuccessful in both ventures and went down 21-O. The Buffaloes played credit- ably, shutting the Cowboys out in the second half, but they lacked what a team has to have to score - offense. So dominant was Car- ter's defense that Sunset could record only five first downs while throwing one interception and fumbling twice . For the second week in a row COWBOY FOOTBALL 21 5 There's no doubt about this Cowboy touchdown. the Cowboy offense displayed an awesome ground game. The threesome of Taylor, Newhouse, and Gleaves generated much of Carter's 289 yards rushing under the cool leadership of junior Marty Morrison. Three first half drives covering 80, 91, and 29 yards put the game on ice for the Pokes. The first thrust accumulated 12 plays with tailback Bo Taylor scoring on 4th and one. Gleaves was not to be denied either as he carried the ball six times in the next drive before going in from the two. Defensive tackle Philmore Peterson provided impetus later in the half when he pounced on a fumble at the 29, setting the stage for John Newhouse's 2-yard jaunt 5 plays later. The junior scatback led all runners with 98 steps. Three fumbles prevented fur- ther Cowboy scoring, but it wasn't needed thanks to some good old-fashioned defense which Carter partisans have come to expect. Sunset was the fifth blank of the year and upped Carter's district mark to 4-0. POKES HALT MUSTANGE, 15- 216 COWBOY FOOTBALL Taylor knows where he's going. Scoreboard emphasizes Poke vic tory. Two 12-AAAA kingpins. loss would virtually eliminate ne team from playoff aspira- ions. The game marked a simi- arity to a classic college battle 'n '69 - Texas 15, Arkansas 14. The Longhorns pulled out a late th quarter rally and eventually became number one in the land . David Hagerman was the hero in this one. The six foot, 180 pound end hauled in a two-point conversion pass from teammate Marty Morrison which provided the margin of victory. Fullback Steve Gleaves had scored one play earlier on a picture-perfect pass from the nine which cli- maxed a 65-yard drive. The Cowboys had problems all night with the Mustang passing game as Roosevelt went to the air 30 times, completing 16 for 195 yards. It was the crisp passing of Morrison, however, which led to Carter's initial tally. The junior QB rifled a toss to end John Janosko good for 21 yards and a 6-0 lead. Ray Paul tacked on the point after giving the Pokes a 7 point first quarter advantage. Following a Newhouse fumble, the Mustangs knotted the count at seven-all. The score remained unchanged throughout the first half. Deep in the 3rd period, Roose- velt mounted their go-ahead drive, most of the yardage com- ing on a '78 yard punt return to the Cowboy 16. The scoreboard read 14-'7 until midway through the fourth quarter when the Poke offense suddenly caught fire. Steady rushing by Taylor, Gleaves, and Newhouse provided the spark which ignited the 13- play drive . After Hagerman's clutch reception, the Mustangs began COWBOY FOOTBALL 21 7 their last valiant effort despite a heavy rush from Mymbs and Co. they advanced to Carter's 23 yard line before finally succum- bing. James Hampton settled the issue by spiking a fourth down pass at the goal line. The victory provided Couch's Legions with a 5-0 district record and no reason to believe they couldn't be number one. Perhaps the Texas game had been an what was that you said, Ref? omen of things to come. COWBOYS DOWN SOC, 7-O SPRAGUE FIELD - When nei- ther offense in a game scores then the defense much decide the victor. In Carter's 12-AAAA clash with the SOC Golden Bears, neither offense could generate a score. The Cowboys managed 130 total yards while South Oak hd Cliff mustered a meager 91. Only 14 first downs were regis- tered between the two teams and just two of twelve passes were completed. Hard hitting prod- uced five fumbles, but the defensive gem of the evening was turned in by Carter ace Don Mayberry who blocked his 6th punt of the season and scored the only touchdown of the contest, 'providing the Pokes with a shaky 7-O decision. Coach Couch could not have asked more from his defense. Never letting up for four quar- ters, they controlled the Bears' vaunted runners and sacked SOC quarterbacks no less than eight times. The Poke offense was plagued by turnovers - three lost fumbles and one interception, which kept hem from threatening, although ey did have the ball on the Bear ne as the gun sounded. All of arter's yardage came via rush- ing. Bo Taylor took first place with 58 yards as the Cowboys turned in their lowest total in nine games. Needless to say, a team can't lose if the opposition fails to score. Standout performances from Don Mayberry, Philmore Peterson, Calvin Beamon, Ger- ald Mymbs, Thomas Brady, and Calvin Lester emphasized that point as SOC became Carter's 6th shutout victim. James Hampton cut them off at the pass with an interception while Brad Threatt and John Newhouse recovered fumbles. Punter Steve Gleaves kept the Bears deep in their own territory with punts averaging 45 yards. With the victory, Carter claimed undisputed possession of first place in District 12-AAAA and could clinch it with a win l One down, two to go. usa ii' ' . r - ' ' fini' ' Chambers uses his head . over arch-rival Kimball the fol- lowing week. POKES TAKE DISTRICT, 13-3 SPRAGUE FIELD - During the halftime festivities hundreds of balloons were released from the field, but many failed to get off the ground. Much like the offen- ses of Carter and Kimball which stuttered and sputtered for three quarters before the Cowboys rang up two fourth period scores to defeat Kimball 13-3. It marked the fourth straight district title for the Pokes - a city record . The Knights held a slim three point advantage going into the final quarter as the result of a 20- yard field goal, incidentally, the only 3-pointer against Car- ter's defense in ten games. Kim- ba1l's lead only seemed to spur the Cowboys on more. Led by Steve Gleaves' running, the COWBOY FOOTBALL 21 9 W31..,.S ,,,,,, 1 offense quickly took command and embarked on a go-ahead 65- yard drive. The all-district full- back broke one run for 33 yards plus he had one for ten steps before his 2-yard pay-off. It was all the scoring Carter needed, although Marty Morrison did score from the three with nine seconds remaining. QB Morrison draws a crowd . CARTER WINS VIA FIRST DOWNS, 7-7 The Knights had ample scoring opportunities due to three Poke fumbles. They failed to score before the half on four downs inside the six. Gerald Mymbs and Robert Lujan combined to prevent the touchdown on fourth and one. Kimball later drove to the ten and 26-yard lines but were again denied by the state's top-rated defense. The tandem running of Bo Taylor C96 yardsj and Steve Gleaves C715 proved to be too much for the Knights as the Cow- boys ended district play with a perfect 7-O slate. The tenth ranked champions will clash with 11-AAAA kingpin White the fol- lowing week for city honors. SPRAGUE FIELD - A tie is not like kissing your sister when it advances you to the regional playoffs. Ask the Carter Cowboys who defeated the White Long- horns for the city championship on the basis of one more first 220 COWBOY FOOTBALL down. The score was 7-'7 and it was indeed a close contest. Pen- etrations were even at two apiece, but the Cowboys will advance in the playoffs because of an edge in first downs, 12-11. Hagerman tip-toes through the astroturf Brady shows how the Ali-shuffle is really done . The Longhorns scored first, following a '7-yard punt, hind- ered by a 35-mile-per-hour wind, which set them up at Car- ter's 22. The drive consumed five plays, the TD coming on a 2-yard fourth down pass. The point after provided White with a 7-0 third quarter lead. The Cowboys waited until the fourth period to score. John New- house carried the mail on the 13th play, a two yard jaunt which topped off a perfectly executed 55-yard drive. Ray Paul kicked the all-important PAT to knot the count at seven-all. With time running out in the final stanza , the Longhorns began their final effort, not for points, but for first downs. They needed just two to clinch the game. The first one occured on a clutch 23- yard pass on fourth and 21. The season had come down to just one play, a do-or-die situation. Car- ter's defense rose to the occasion as it had all year when the Long- horn pass and hopes were inter- cepted by Don Mayberry at the ten. Both teams played outstanding defense, partly aided by the fierce wind. Although the Pokes L. CARIEH 133- POKES LASSO HEIGHTS, 34-21 led in first downs, the 'Horns actually accumulated more yards but were hampered by turnovers. Robert Lujan intercepted a pass and teamed with James Hampton for two fumble recoveries which thwarted early Longhorn drives. The Pokes came alive offen- sively in the fourth quarter as they rushed for most of their 139 yards on the ground. Penalities most-likely provided the key to Carter's victory. White was penalized for 65 steps while their opponent was errorless in that department. The regional playoffs are next for our heroes who will tackle unbeaten Fort Worth Arlington Heights next week. SPRAGUE FIELD - That old axiom - The bigger they are, the harder they fall was never more evident than in Carter's regional playoff battle with Arlington Heights. The underdog Cowboys, using speed, defensive prowess, and showing the knack for making the big plays, cor- ralled Fort Worth's giants 34-21 before a packed house at chilly Sprague Field. The Yellow Jackets' size proved a problem for the Pokes in the early going. They quickly marched to a 7-0 first quarter lead and did so with such preci- sion that one might have won- dered if a rout was in store. Full- back Steve Gleaves promptly put those thoughts to rest on the ensuing play as he broke through COWBOY FOOTBALL 221 the left side of the line and out- raced two Heights defenders for an 80-yard touchdown. Ray Paul tacked on the point after to even the score at 7-7. Lost fumbles aborted further scoring opportunities in the first half, however the Yellow Jackets did kick a field goal to lead by three at intermission. Carter grabbed the lead for the first time in the third quarter when John Newhouse tallied from the one. The play culminated a 65-yard push in six plays, high- lighted by Newhouse's 48-yard ramble. Fort Worth closed to within one following their second field goal, but it was the closest they would come, as the tena- cious Cowboy defense came to life and had a hand in three more Poke scores. With the score at 14-13, Bruce Chambers recovered a loose Jacket pigskin at the 14, setting up Marty Morrison's 10-yard run to paydirt. Two quick scores iced the game for Carter when Robert Lujan and James Hampton each picked off errant tosses and returned them for TDs of 40 'and 60 yards, respectively. Arlington Heights scored a meaningless touchdown with seconds left to run the count to the final 34-21. Although Heights had more first downs C20-143, the total yardage was even as were turn- overs. Gleaves led all rushers with 114 yards, closely followed by Newhouse 41133. The win upped Carter's record to 10-1-1 and a chance to play Plano C12-OJ in next week's quar- ter-finals. COTTON BOWL - Ask Carter Coach Kedric Couch about offen- ses and he might tell you the best loffense is a good defense. His team proved that point to the etter in defeating top-ranked lano in the state quarter-finals by the score of 19-7 before ll5, OOO fans in Dallas. A Cotton Bowl Classic it wasn't, but it did have its noments, especially if you're a Carter partisan. The Cowboys engineered three big plays which produced three big scores en route to their third straight post- season victory. Playing without their double- barrel duo of Gleaves and Taylor due to injuries, the Pokes were forced to use JV runner Malcolm Jones who teamed nicely with Newhouse in the backfield and provided the most exciting play of the season for the Cowboys. Receiving the opening kickoff at the ten, Jones slipped and squirmed his way for the remain- ing 90 yards and a 6-O Carter lead. The Wildcats quickly reas- serted themselves, however, by driving 61 yards to pull ahead '7- 6. Carter was denied a touchdown later in the half on four tries inside the one, but it didn't mat- ter since they got it back before intermission on one of Carter's favorite plays - the blocked punt. Linebacker John Newhouse applied the pressure and received his just reward of six points to account for the Pokes' 12-'Y half- time lead. Plano's offense geared up in the third quarter as they drove to the Cowboy ten and 13-yard lines before miscues did them in. Hard hitting by Carter's line caused two fumbles, both recovered by linebacker Brad Threatt. Carter clinched the victory in the final period as Don Mayberry stole a pass and wound up at the nine, 48 yards later, setting up Beamon, Mayberry, and Lujan converge on ball-carrier. COWBOY FOOTBALL 223 the final TD - a 9-yard scamper by Jones. The 19-'7 lead stood up for the remainder of the contest, although the Wildcats did man- age one last thrust into Cowboy territory before being halted on fourth down by stalwart Philmore Peterson. It was a night for big plays and Carter took advantage of their's while ending Plano's season at 12-1. The 11-1-1 Cowboys will 2 l FOG, SKEETERS END POKE DREAMS, 14-12 face Mesquite next in the semi- finals. COTTON BOWL - The Carter Cowboys confronted a number of obstacles in their semi-finals match with Mesquite, but many of the 14,500 spectators in the Cotton Bowl had not the foggi- est idea what those obstructions were. For the record, Mesquite turned back our heroes 14-12, but the manner in which they did so leaves question as to their supremacy. First of all, the contest should never have been played at all, due to the heavy fog which smothered the Cotton Bowl. Sec- ondly, a number of questionable calls by officials plus a fine Skeeter team were too much for the Pokes who finished the season at 11-2-1 . Mesquite tallied first on a 12- yard pass in the initial period to take a 7-O margin. The Cowboys came right back, however, as QB Marty Morrison lofted a perfect 224 COWBOY FOOTBALL strike to end John lanosko from 25 yards out to tie the score. The touchdown capped an 80-yard second quarter drive. Tailback Bo Taylor led the charge later in the half as the Pokes embarked on a '70-yard march resulting in a Ray Paul three-pointer. Momentum shifted to Mes- quite's side at the outset of the third quarter as they drove 67 yards to take a 14-10 advantage. They advanced to the Carter nine on their ensuing possession before fumbling the ball away to Phil- more Peterson. The Cowboys were unable to mount any offen- sive and were forced to punt. Mesquite appeared to have the game well in hand as they ram- bled to the Poke three yard line midway through the final stanza , but were derailed by Gerald Mymbs on third down. The Cow- boys, as had been their custom all year, were ready to make a comeback. Behind the running of Taylor C75 yardsj , Malcolm Jones, and John Newhouse, tht Pokes advanced to the Skeeter 2' with a first down. Spot-runne Bruce Chambers turned the lef corner for 15 yards and anothe first before disaster struck. Thr Cowboys had been detected clip ping on the play and instead of t first down at the eleven, the now faced a first and 25 from thi 40. With less than a minutl remaining, Morrison's pass wa intercepted at the two which se off a controversial call by offi cials who ruled that the momeri tum of the pass had carried th Skeeter defender into the eng zone, giving Mesquite possessio at the 20 instead of wha appeared to many viewers as, safety for Carter. 1 On fourth down Mesquite tod an intentional safety in order 1 avoid having the punt blocked providing the Pokes with one la opportunity to gain a state play off position. Ray Paul's 50-yal field goal attempt split the fa but not the goal posts and ensured victory for Mesquite. The loss marked an end to Car- ter's finest season since 1971 when they were also defeated in the semis.
