' 69-70 Calico means cowgirl in French. The David W. Carter Calicos are proud to have carried this name for four years. Their' purpose is to promote school spirit, attend all school functions, and set a high standard for others to follow. The organization is composed of a chosen group of girls with a vigorous desire to serve. They are led by a selected group of officers and by the best sponsor, Mrs. Hubert. The newly honored officers abandon their care- free days to start grueling training at summer camp. After summer camp they return to their homeland to pass their Newfound experiences on to their Cali- co charges. Their basic trainingg however, only leaves them with the ground rules from which they spend many explosive and mindbending hours originating their own style for their routines. Equipped with anything from tamborines to hoops the girls performed show class routines thru football season to the sounds of Aquarius and Basin Street Blues and many others. They were seen any- where from manipulating themselves into their for- mation of a hat to performing in parades in Down- town Dallas. With memories aglow the Senior Calicoes give their final outstanding performance during the spring training game. So, we tip our hats in farewell to our beloved D. W. Carter High School, is organized as the 21st ROTC Battalion, otherwise called the Corps. The battalion is composed of five com- panies, with each organized in line with an Army Infantry unit to allow for a chain of command. Additionally, the battalion is com- manded by the cadet Battalion Commander, who has a Headquar- ters composed of Staff Officers and Staff Instructors. The officers in the Corps are normally third-year cadets, while the noncommissioned officers are second-year cadets. The com- panies are commanded by cadet Captains, with Lieutenants as their Platoon Leaders, while the Battalion is commanded by a cadet Lieutenant Colonel. The ROTC program has many goals, with the primary aspect to allow a young man to acquire pride and confidence in himself and his country, and to attain the level of leadership necessary to be- come a leader in his community. The program is not designed to produce soldiers, but only to provide young men with the funda- mental knowledge of basic military subjects if and when they enter Service. The greatest goal is good citizenship, which is en- hanced through the requirements of the program. The Carter ROTC program is extremely active, and performs in the many activities of the school. Members of the Corps also vol- unteer to help in maintaining order in the school building, and raise the United States and Texas Flags daily. The cadets work hard to better themselves, their school, and their community, but they also enjoy the Corps social activities, the Drill Team, and the Rifle Team competitions. Overall, if a young man wants to get involved and meet the challenge of be- coming a better man, then the Corps is the place to be. Battalion Flxecutive Officer.
