This has been the prime ob- jective of the Social Studies department. Ever challenging the minds of their students, the teachers have sought to bring out the pupil's questions and answer them in the best possible way. The responsibility and obligation to the pupils to teach them the truth and logic of the past has always demanded the best of qualified teachers. Their capability to answer the many uwhysv that lie in the minds of the students has always led to general agreement that our Social Studies de- partment is outstanding. The assemblies ranged from pep rallies to bear- ing singers, ex-convicts, ex-narcotic addicts, and medical service personnel. Spirit is the key word in a Carter pep rally especially when the foundations tremble and building rocks for the Carter vs. Kimball foot- ball game. Inspiration is always accrued from guest speakers speaking on the social ills of our society and the problems that confront us as stu- dents and as individuals. Carter can always be grateful for its as- semblies. Ure Music iflflalf' Meridith Willson's musical The Music Man was given by the Concert Choir and Drama De- partment of David W. Carter during the season of 1967-1968. The musical's story itself is about a roving sales- man who comes to River City, Iowa, to sell band instruments to all the children of the town. The man is a Hfakel' and knows nothing about music. Hence- forth, he tries to collect money from the people for a band and keep the money for himself. The salesman, Harold Hill, falls in love with the libra- rian, Marian Paroo, and wishes now to give the people's money back to them and go straight. The whole town is in an uproar over the incident but he explains everything 'and the story ends happily in peace and romance for Harold and Marian played by Ricky Hosford and Pat Dolleman. 68 STUDENT LIFE The cast of the Music Man . . . George Kimball, played by Lanny Smith, is a hypochondriac who be- lieves he is going to die within a short time after overhearing Doctor Morrisey, played by Ricky Hosford, tell a doctor that one of his other patients is going to die. Much hilarity is involved when George tries to plan the future for his wife, Judy, played by Brenda Paige, after he has died. The military ball is a pageant combined with dancing which is drawn from the rich heritage of the American Army, West Point, and military academies. The ball is the social event of the year, and is formal in nature, and gay in attitude. Informal dancing takes place on completion of the cadets, guests and young ladies being introduced to the Senior Army Instructor and the Principal with their ladies in the receiving line. The entire play was a satire filled with humorous mocking of events in Car- teris student life. The town was under the leadership of Mayor Love-Em-All, portrayed by Guy Ames and Sheriff Wyatt, played.by Steve Lowery, whose duty was to insure order, issue hall passes, and to make sure that all were assigned bathroom buddies. Fighting a never ending battle for chocolate milk, senior privileges, and library permits were the town drunk, Ricky Hosfordg Hop Along Hominy, Bobby Clark: and his loyal horse, Grits, portrayed by Myra Weempe. The play was a great success as a humorous antidote for the problems of Carter student life. Uh, Could we please have a hall pass? 74 STUDENT LIFE ew Cmclzers join Hzzrfcr SMH at Mid-term WH MGLER 1- ' 1 nr Ow , W, ,zen cj 4 ,, .,,K,, ,IY, , M . , 3 Lhanb' 'fl f ' .. was , J. ff MR. This year the Honor Society sponsored a Teacher Appreciation tea which was enjoyed by all Carter teachers. Society members hosted and served refreshments throughout the day. The Honor Society also has begun a student tutoring service as a service to students and faculty of Carter. Honor Society students have offered their aid to any interested student whom they may help academically. Many Honor Society members recently took the PSAT scholastic test, enabling them to compete for scholarships and gain an idea of their preparedness for the SAT.
