THE PRuNciPAL's MESSAGE ' S, 7 K A yearbook is a treasure of memories,--memories of classes, students, teachers, activities and events., For some these will be happy memories, for some there may be unhappy memories and some will be touched by what is recorded here. When this book has been read, autographed and dis- cussed itwill be placed upon a shelf and forgotten except for occasions of moments of reminiscing. However, the events which took place in your lives during this year cannot be laid aside so easily. They have become part of you and will help to form the per- sonality and character of the men or women you will be some day. Every year is different and every class is unique. This year has been one of pleasure and happiness for the Jor- dan staff. We have observed and measured your progress in many subjects, and in many areas of life. We are proud of your accomplishments. We owe a debt of gratitude to the ninth grade class for the leadership and standards of behavior which it has provided this year. As goals have been achieved the members of this class have gone on to newer and greater challenges. Every day has been well lived and this pro- vided one of the finest years in the history of Jordan Jun- ior High. A. C. ANNA LAWRENCE S EVENTH Our Jordan Year in Review would not have been as successful as it has been if it were not for the outstanding personal direction of our five guidance counselors. They have directed their classes wisely and have been greatly instrumental in seeing that the school year has progressed smoothly. As each class enters Jordan it is assigneda grade coun- selor who remains with the members of the class until they graduate. There is also a testing counselor who admin- isters tests and helps the grade level counselor evaluate student progress. Scheduling of classes in line witha students abilities and desires, advising on personal and social problems and resolving differences between pupil, teachers and even parents are some of the things that counselors attempt to do. They work with the teachers in helping students to work to their capacity and try to be a friend in every way possible to the student. Mr. Utley has stated thathis main obiect for the ninth grade class has been, to see that the pupil 's study habits and grasp of fundamentals improve sufficiently so that they will be successful in senior high school work. Miss Gibbs feels that, in the eighth grade students need to improve study habits in order to be ready to do ninth grade work. ln the seventh grade, Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs. Brady stress, trying to help the students adjust to their new environment and to bridge the gap between elementary and iunior high school, academically and socially. is MAMIE BRADY CONNELL KORB SPECIAL SEVENTH 7 TESTING ...Xxx MABEL ABLARD ALIEDA BIRCK HUGH CENTER J: 3 2 1 A 1 Z , A, EDWARD COX MAUREEN DOHERTY M A X WERNER GOLDNER THE JURDA DANIEL ALCALA ff' If 'V 'S 1 'K H x V: Q LYNN BORDERS B G' M ARK CHRISTINE PAT DAYTON A- 1 K I I DAVID DOWNS I v -fm. 'l'llll Sllzlsllll IN REVIEW The Jordan Varsity certainly deserves congratulations for the excellent iob they did this year under the Fine leadership of head coach Bob Cavender. I ln their season opener against Sequoia the Dolphins coasted to an easy 38-0 win. This opening game omen proved to be agood one, and the Dolphins rode through the season with a six won, one loss record. The Dolphin attack, led by Bud Linsley, beat the Bellarmine Bells in an exciting i3-7 game. Linsley scored both Jordan touchdowns in this game, whichwas our only night game of the season. Our Varsit then teamed up with the Lightweights for an easy victory over the Paly High Sophs, with the finarlscore in this game standing at 28-13. Jordan's record was marred by Menlo Atherton, in agame which marked the Dolphins' First and only loss of the season. With the M.A. Bears leading by T9 points at the start of the Fourth quarter the Jordan attack came back under John McGregor and Rich Wilkersen, to score T3 points and encl the game in a i9-I3 loss. With Wilkersen leading the Jordan attack, the Dolphins scored an easy victory over the Sunny- vale Jets. Wilkersenwas the game 's high scorer, running for two touchdowns and passing for a third six pointer, which brought the final score to 26-I4. The Jordan eleven met the Wilbur Warriors at Paly High's Hod Ray Field for their Final game of the season. Basing their attack on the single wing, the Dolphins scored late in the first quarter on an aerial from John McGregor to Wilkersen who theh lateraled to Bob Talbott who went over for a six pointer. But the Warriors finally scored in the second quarter to go ahead 7-6. Wilkersen regained the lead for Jordan, scoring in the third quarter from the one yard line. Again the Jordan conversion was not good. But once again Wilbur came back and scored late in the same quarter to go back out in front by one point, I3-l2. Then withafew minutes left in the game, John McGregor passed from the i5 yard stripe to Bob Biorn who went over for the final tally of the game. The Dolphins were victorious with the final score standing at T8-13. llllli l'l'Y FUUTBALL Tllll Llllll'l'Wllllill'l' Even though the Lightweight Football Team 's won and loss record was not too impressive, the value received by them in working and playing together more than made the season a success. The Lightweights opened their season against the San Carlos Boys' Club. The San Carlos team scored first in the second quarter, but the Dolphins came to life in the last quarter after Bob Lauridsen intercepted a San Carlos pass. On the next play Lee Davis ran 55 yards for the touch- down. The conversion was good and this game ended in a 7-7 deadlock. The Junior Dolphins next tangled with Sequoia, with Jim Fields starring for the Dolphins by going over twice in the first half. Sequoia won this close game by one point, T9-l8. Jordan met Sequoia again, but this time they played a greatly improved team and went down to defeat. The Sequoians scored twice in the first quarter and again in the second., The game 's final score was 20-O. The Lightweights ended their season by playing the Wilbur Lightweight team. Although the Warriors won by a T2-O score in a hard fought contest, the Dolphins appeared to be on their way to a score as the final gun sounded. At the annual Football Banquet given for the Varsity and the Lightweight teams at the end of the season, John Stewart, Stanford end and ex-Jordanite, spoke to the players on the value of schoolwork to an athlete. Rich Wilkersen was awarded the most valuable player award by the team. John McGregor received anaward for being the most improved player, while Ricky Malloch was presented the Coaches' Award, and Bob Talbott was named team captain for the season. It was also announced at the conclusion of the season that Coach Bob Cavender would replace Mr. Utley as the ninth grade counselor during the spring semester. At the same time Don Harris will move out into the gym to take over Coach Cavender's classes. No plans for next season 's coaching staff had been decided as this book went to press. Season's Highlights Early in March the Jordan baseball team was formed under the direction of Coach Mark Christine. With only a few days of practice behind them, the Dolphins met their first opponent,Menlo Atherton, and lost, ll-2. Jordan met Sequoia next, and lost, this time by an ll-3 score. The Dolphins showed great improvement in their third game of the season against Bellarmine and won, 9-4. With two-thirds of the season still to be played, it appeared that the steadily improving Dolphins had finally found the winning combination. Sparked by the battery of Bob Talbott, catcher, and Rick Malloch, pitcher, along with the steady play of First baseman Bill Turner, the club looked forward to a promising season. With only a few weeksof practice behind them, the Dolphins defeated Serra in a triangular meet between Jordan, Wilbur, and Serra Jordan and Wilbur tiecl at 46 points each, while holding Serra to 4 points. This meet was highlighted by the establishing ofa new Jordan 75 yard dash record of 8.1 seconds byGlen MacGregor . Although the season was just getting underway as thiskpage went to press,,it ap- peared as though the individual efforts of MacGregor and Talbott, along with the re- lay team of Field, MacGregor, Hong and Lindsey, will insure that Jordan will be well represented on the cinderpaths this year. x ra ww 0 f k .'
