Lynda Hawkins DEAN OF WOMEN Gerald Notick DEAN OF MEN Academic Life Any student with a problem heads for one of three places: the counseling office, the library, or the nurse ' s office. In the counselinfi office, Ms. Valdez, Mrs. Coleman and Mrs. Carter are all continually aidinfi students in their future course of study, either at Jordan Ilifih or at college. The library, one of the best within the Los Angeles School District, receives students seeking aid in their studies. Mrs. O ' Daly, The librarian, is always ready to aid and advise students on how to use the library. She and her aids daily check books in and out and take care of categorizing all written materials. Mrs. Thompson, the school nurse, receives those students with maladies from an upset stomach to a broken leg. She is continually on the job to promote the physical well-being of the student body. The members of this specialized staff are experts in help- ing and aiding students, and are most vital to the operation of Jordan High. Jacqueline C. O ' Dalv LIBRARIAN Bertha M. Strange Dance Dance Dance Before the dance After the dance The English as a Second Language Department at Jordan High is growing slowly but surely. The prima- ry goal of this progrem is to teach the students enough English so they will be able to function well in a regu- lar classroom setting. The staff members: Deborah Moss, Coordinator: Tony Velie, E.S.L. Teacher, and Carlos Sanchez, teacher as- sistant work together to privide the most individual- ized instruction for these students with support in the primary language. Spanish. Furthermore, the students with limited- English skills are mainstreamed into many regular classes such as math, physical education health. Teachers have gone out of their way to accommodate the individual needs of these students. We are lucky to have such bright and diligent students and such supportive parents and staff. Winning half of our practicle matches, the team looked ok. But our league was changed and we were put against two new superteams, Narbonne and Gardena. We ended up in . ' ird place which was outstanding considering the circumstances. Led by singles players Marva Scott and I.aurann Hardie and tremendously strong double teams, all the coaches were very impressed with our play and sportsmanship. The other supporting members of this great team were Mary McKnight, Debra Holmes. Karen Scott, Gwen Scott, Regina Daniels, Tina Baca, Lisa Richards. Linda Williams. Diana Hill, Catherine Curtis, Eugenia Todd. Veronica Rice, Denise Coleman, Lisa Brown, and Cindy McMiliian. During the Individual Tournament, at the end of the year, Laurann Hardie made it to the semifinals before losing to the 6lh best player in the city, in doubles, Gwen Scott and Karen Scott made it to the semifinals before losing to the 10th best team in the city. The outlook for next year looks great with only four girls graduating. Congratulation girls on a great season. WO.MEi ' S TENNIS Sitting Down. Left to Right: F. Hill. M. Mitchell. R. Williams. W. Establishing a 3 and I record in pre- season, our team looks very balanced with substitutes who can also play very well. Led by singles players, Mathew Jones and Ebon Knox, and doubles players. Craig Russell and Kevin Roberson, the Bulldogs figure to be strong this year in league. Top supporting members of this squad are Alvin Cleveland, Cercinus Hines. Wayne Sparks. Forrest Dickson, Steve Orange. Ricky Williams. Marlon Mitchell, Jerome Crutchfield, Fred Hill, David ( hildress, Leonard McDaniels, and Don demons. The team is putting forth long hours on the tennis courts practicing and playing in tennis tournaments. Mathew Jones just won First Place in the Cal-State Northridge Tournament. In other words: W.ATCH OCT WORLD, HERE COME THE RACKETEERS. 1 or %i The Jordan High lindminton Teiim finished its season plac- ing third in the Cily. Finals were held on March 25. 1981 at Wilson High and awards were pre-following the competi- tion. Tina Baca placed Second in the City in the Third-Singles catagory. Sheila lioykin and her partner. Mary Harrison placed fourth in the Ci ty in the Third-Doubles catagory. LOS ANGELES, CA 90008 PHONE (213) 205-2865 GREETINGS from CONGRESSMAN AUGUSTUS F. (GUS) HAWKINS Mr. Hawkins conferring with Senior Interns for 1980 L to R Saralee Todd, Legis- lative Aide; Mrs. M. Relph and Mrs. L. Barnett, and Congressman Hawkins. Augustine F. Hawkins, Democrat, re- presents the twenty-ninth Congres- sional District of California which in- cludes the cities of: Walnut Park, South Gate, Huntington Park, Cudahy, Vernon and Bell. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, the son of a Pharmacist. At age 11, his family moved to Los Angeles. He earned a de- gree in economics from the University of California at Los Angeles and at- tended graduate classes at the Univer- sity of Southern California ' s Institute of Government. During the 93rd Congress, Represen- tative Hawkins authored three land- mark pieces of legislation and worked successfully for their Congressional approval. They were: The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act which became Law September 7, 1974; The Community Services Act, Ti- tle VII section amendment to the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, which was passed into Law April 12, 1974. Three other pieces of legislation, auth- ored by Congressman Hawkins be- came Law in the 95th Congress: CETA, Comprehensive Employment and Training Amendments of 1978 (P.L. 95-93) on August 5, 1977; and. The Pregnancy Disability Act (P.L. 95-555) on October 31, 1978. Representative Hawkins continues to be an exemplary image of his own per- sonal view of public service: The leadership belongs not to those who beat the drums or blow the trumpets, but to those who day in and day out, in all season, work for the practical real- ization of a better world — those who have the stamina to persist and to re- main honest and dedicated. To those belong the leadership. 141 DR. Offi Res. 140 ' ' %p,. , f y e S A y fqy fitfi i t v a3 V) J4i tr i . Frank Marshall — President Congratulations STORMIES FUME - FOR PEST INC.
