Whether contemplating action on the volleyball court, psyching ourselves up for a football game, chowing down at lunch, cheering for our teams, or engaging in any other of our many activities, we let everyone know how we felt through our expres- sions. They became the symbols of this unique year at Jordan. 1 H Bw H H 61 Pip w s m .-2j£ The camera captured us in contemplation, in serious chats, and just foolin ' around as we lived through the action and emotions of another special school year. Cline Square was a center of activity as we gathered to relax or rally and share the days of 80 — ' 81. Can we ever forget these days that made us gaze in wonder, grimace in frustration, and peer anxiously in concern? Never — no more than we will forget those moments when we struck poses for our roving photo- graphers. The highs, lows, and in-betweens of our years were reflected in our pictures. We Express Ourselves in Life on campus at Jordan means dif- ferent things to different people. It may mean yelling your tonsils out in sup- port of the Panther teams. It may mean cotton candy and friends at Homecom- ing or wondering why you ' re standing there waiting to play another drum roll. But, most important, it means for all of us a chance to make a choice about how, where, and when we will express our talents and our feelings. •LEO LAND COTTON CANDY  £ tU i H v m ■flk r m Varsity Yell Expresses Enthusiasm For Jordan ' s Athletic Teams Jordan ' s ' 80 — ' 81 varsity yell squad promoted school spirit and unity, the key ingredient to a successful yell group. The squad attended cheerleading camp in Santa Barbara. There they learned a great deal about how to express their enthusiasm and support for the school ' s teams. Members worked hard cheering for the football and basketball teams and also showed much school pride at Jordan ' s rallies and assemblies. Members of varsity yell pictured here are: Theresa Runswick, Alisha Wright, Becky Weill, Rachel Gallardo, Squad Leader Gail Falkenburg, Co-Captain Tamara Thomas, Charlotte Ruben, Co-Captain Shelly Null, and Lonie Hegedus. J. V. Yell Stirs Pride for Juniors, Sophs The J. V. Yell squad of ' 80 — ' 81 was a great success and enjoyed cheering together for the J. V. and soph- omore teams. Most members of the squad went to the USA camp and learned many new cheers and ideas. At camp they also earned three superior ribbons and one exceptional, along with having a wonderful time. Squad members pictured individually here are Felicia Thompson, Leader April Anderson, Kim Cash, Julie Carrier, and Gretchen Welch. Not shown is Stephanie McKinnon. Mascots Help Yel Pepsters Boost Spirit 1980-81 Jordan mascots Joe LeDoux and Denise Williams gave the Pepsters and Yell squads a hand in boosting school spirit. They demonstrated their pride and uniqueness in the many skits they pre- pared and performed this year. Without them, our Jordan cheers would have been incomplete. Pepsters Just Can ' t Hide That 01 ' Panther Pride This year ' s proud pepsters, under the direction of Ms. Lindahl, brought excitement and lots of spirit to our pep rallies, assemblies and games. They performed in many successful halftime shows and parades. A few of the girls attended U.S.A. summer cheerlead- ing camp where they learned several new routines and won various ribbons. The vivacious girls put in many long hard hours of practice every day during the summer to perfect their routines and cheers. They have proven themselves through many fine performances. -£3% ■S B SiS i fb ' -fi 3 1 • « f Inl ■ m H Flag girls striking a pose are Front: Chris Baeten, Lynn McPherson, Jean Wolfe; Back: Paula Desmond, Terri Owens and Head Flag Girl Cyndi Monroe. Our faces were sometimes funny and even grotesque as we opened wide for that last mouthful of calo- ries to keep us going. Many students were also heard to ex- press themselves somewhat vehemently on the subject of this year ' s increased lunch prices. But that didn ' t stop our fun in joining in on the rallies led by Jordan pep groups urging us on to show that Panther spirit. gn 1 2 r,v j r i l ft c? ; .A sL jjh Pantherettes Show Spirit, Excitement, Pride Spirit, enthusiasm, and pride were all expressed by the 1980-81 Pantherettes. The girls practiced weekly during the summer and throughout the school year. They helped create spirit and unity by supporting minor sports events and selling spirit buttons as well as performing at rallies and football games. Row 1: Cynthia Brown. We gain pride in a job well done. And sometimes we suffer the agony of defeat as well. 1980-81 had its share of both, as we see when we look back over the expressions we showed during this special year. Sports 1 S V fc 7 j Injuries Plague Varsity In Difficult Season Injuries to players, including starting quarterback Michael Greer, plagued the varsity Panthers this year as they completed a season that featured only one victory. Ex- cited by an opening win against Santiago, Jordan fans saw their hopes go unfulfilled as the team emerged from the Moore League season with a 0-5 record. Nonetheless, there were exciting moments. ' s Tie for Second in Moore League Play Even though the J.V. ' s lost some fine players like Elijah Fitzhugh and Mark Gershen because of injuries, the team continued to improve. Most valuable player Julius Wright sparked the offense with fine running as well as receiving. Steve Ramirez, continually the leading tackier, led the defense with superb play. By league play quarterback Paul Olin stepped in and combined his excellent throwing arm with Wright ' s nimble hands to pace the team to a successful season ending in a tie for second place in the Moore League competition. Sophs Emerge as League Co-Champs With an overall 8-1 record and 4 wins and 1 loss in Moore League play, the Jordan sophomore football team came out tied for first place. According to Coach Jim Eden, the teams biggest win was the 7-6 defeat of Poly here at Jordan, puttiing the Panth- ers into the championship. He also noted as a high point the 16-0 win over Lakewood when most valuable player Anthony Thompson gained 227 yards. Best defensive back was Mike Aloni, while Andre Frazier was the outstanding defensive lineman. The 1980-81 Trailbl azer class chose Expressions of a Year in hopes that we might capture the faces and moments of a special time in the lives of Jordan High students. As always, it seems, the staff had to duel with deadlines, weather the weather, reschedule the schedule, and cope with similar realities in order to focus in on the expressions of our year. Whether or not we have succeeded can only be measured by the answers to questions twenty years from now such as, Who was that guy girl, and why did s he look that way? Left to Right: Walter Shepherd. Principal Also Shows Expressions of ' 80-81 r For most students, high school is a mixture of fun and frustration, work and worry, elation and ennui. The years are so long and yet so short that in future memories the entire expe- rience is something of a blur. This year ' s Trailblazer theme, Expressions of a Year, will help us preserve some of our most trea- sured memories of friends and events. Today, and in the years to come, the chronicle of this year ' s scenes and activities will unfold again for us to savor. Dig in and enjoy the 1980-81 year at Jordan. Good reading. Joseph L. McCleary Principal Just as it did with Jordan ' s students, the camera caught Principal McCleary as his face expressed his happiness, concern concentration and other emotions of the year. Dixon Joins Staff Mr. Bob Dixon returned to Jordan from Lakewood this year to fill the vacant position of Vice-Principal created when Mr. Mike Bowles moved to the principalship at Hamil- ton Junior High. Working with the principal, conferring with parents, supervising campus events, and collaborating with other adminis- trators to keep the school running smoothly are enough to keep Mr. Dixon busy. Assistant Principal Elizabeth Cline Assistant Principal Charles H. Fraser Assistant Principals Assume Instructional Supervision Role Among their duties, Jordan ' s vice-principals play a role in supervising the instruction of students. This year Mrs. Cline covered the areas of social studies, special education, and women ' s physical education as well as supervising health services, Back-to-School Night, and cafeteria operations. She was also in charge of the junior class. Mr. Fraser oversaw the departments of art, industrial education, music, and the military services and also handled lunch permits and graduation arrangements. He was responsible for the senior class. Mrs. Palmer had responsibility for the sophomore class and supervised the departments of driver ' s training, foreign languages, general studies, and home economics. She also worked with attendance and lockers. As activities director, Mr. Keck continued to oversee the plan- ning and execution of all Jordan student events. Assistant Principal Marietta Palmer Activities Director James Keck :• V l Blackmon Joins Counselors The counseling staff welcomed Mrs. Nellie Blackmon to its staff this year. She came to Jordan from Jefferson Junior High. Classes Offer Variety All students are required to take general physical education unless they are involved in team sports, pep squads, or ROTC. P.E. offered swimming, badminton, tennis, volleyball, weight training, basketball, and softball. Students often found the physical exercise a welcome break from the mental gymnastics of such classes as math, chemistry, or biology. Math Adds Computer Programming Course; Two New Teachers Join Science Staff A successful computer program- ming class was added in the math department this year. Continuing offerings included algebra, geom- etry, intermediate algebra, trigonometry, and pre-calculus. A program titled The Learning Step with Math Specialist Amy Dominetta was also available to students who needed more work on basic skills. Two new teachers, Don Moore and Jonna Robinson, joined the sci- ence department. Classes offered included life science, biology, earth science, physiology, physics, chemistry, and photographies. Toshiko Goto Sandra Lucas «V Art, Music Offer Chances for Self-Expression Expressions is this year ' s year- book theme, and classes in art and music have traditionally offered students the opportunity to ex- press their individual personalities within the disciplines of their work. In both areas, students ac- cepted the chance to show off their talents, whether in art dis- plays or in musical performances. Alan Caddick Philip Wyatt Richard Aragon Claude Barks Walter Bugbee Industrial Ed Offers Work Experiences Industrial education courses offered students many chances to deal with equip- ment and situations that they might encounter in the work- ing world. Included were auto body repair, woods, heavy metals, architectural drafting, electronics, and graphic arts. John Thourot Home Ec Classes Face Practicalities Home Economics students had many prac- tical experiences this year. Mrs. Fieldings ' foods classes served a Christmas tea to over 100 guests and prepared dinner for more than forty Lions Club members in the spring. Also served by these classes were the Moore League coaches. Mrs. Brooks helped her students prepare for a mock wedding. A bride and groom were chosen from her ef- fective living class along with bridesmaids and a best man. The group made prepara- tions and plans as though the wedding were actually to take place. The mock ceremon was held in January. $ ;, tf U U Second Language Can Prove Valuable According to Foreign Language Department Chair Hartzell Alpizar, there ' s more to learning another language than just expecting to travel. Many employers realize the importance of speaking two languages, and it is often the de- ciding factor between two people equally qualified people applying for the same job, he said. This year Jordan offered Spanish 1-5, French 1-5, and advanced Ger- man. New to the department was Claudine Mendelovitz. t $ if Moore Joins General Studies Staff Mr. Don Moore joined Jordan ' s General Studies department this year. He was formerly a teacher at Hamilton Junior High. Courses offered included driver education, health education, You and Your Money, and career guidance. The subjects are part of the graduation re- quirements and are designed for sophomores. We Express Ourselves as the Being a sophomore has always been a unique ex- perience. It ' s a combination of excitement about finally being in high school and frustration at being put down by all the juniors and seniors. To be a sophomore is to enter a whole new world. The Class of ' 83, like hundreds of classes before it, adjusted well to this new world and found ways to express itself in the Jordan atmosphere. Par- ticipating in rallies, crossing campus with a friend, sharing a moment of affection these and other experiences made this year ' s sophomores a part of life at Jordan.
