Campus Life Eveiy student finds himself caught up in school spirit, in a world of books, ballgames, and a search for his own identity. F all ASB President It has been a great challenge and a rewarding experience serving the class of 1973 as Sophomore and Junior Class President and the whole student body as ASB President. I feel that the full class of Student Government performed a key role in coordinating the activities of the school in such a manner as to encourage mutual respect, spirit, understanding, and achievement between the students and the administration. I also feel my term of office was highlighted by you, the students of Jordan, for enthusiasm, hard work, and contributions you have made to Jordan, its athletic aims, and to the community of North Long Beach. I salute you, the students of David Starr Jordan. Thanks to each one of you for giving me the opportu- nity to serve you these past three years. Charles A. I soon learned that the iob could be both rewarding and frus- trating. Very few girls have sought this office, and in light of this, I felt especially honored to have been elected by my fellow students. Having the opportunity to deal with many people in a wide variety of circumstances, I feel I learned a great deal about others as well as myself. Each day I came upon new and challenging experiences. During the first semester the students receive two periods of instruction daily, includ- ing laboratory experiences, lectures and discus- sions, presentations by experts in vaious health fields, and field trips. The second semester includes limited active participation in many different depart- ments of a health care facility. 55 Canteen Our canteen, under the direction of Fran Hanel, holds monthly dances with bands such as Edge, hAtlantis, Truth, and Steeple Jaq. Each spring, the choral groups go to a festival where they are graded by two judges, usually college choral professors. The groups are graded on an A,B,C,D,F scale in nine categories, such as blend, balance, tone quality, accuracy, etc., each group receiving eighteen grades. In the twenty years we have been going to festivals, our cumulative grade point average has been 3.65 for all groups. In the past eight years our GPA has been 3.87, a mark of which we are very proud. We have had some exceptional years, such as 1964, when our A Cappella Choir was rated as one of two best in Southern California and was declared by the judges to be the equal of any high school choir in the United States. Our Choraliers of 1969 received the highest possible ratings and Commendations when they were the guest group at the festival in Riverside. Last year's choraliers received the highest ratings at the LBCC invita- tional festival and were invited back again this year, so we're hoping for more high marks. A Cappella Row 1: R. Fisher, C. Jean-Pierre Outteryck-Schneider, our foreign exchange student from DeuiI-la-Barre, France, has proven to be one of the most active and involved students on the Jordan campus. His desire to be active, along with a love for sports, led him to try out for football where he spent the season as split-end on our varsity team. He's also involved in our student affairs through his role in student government. One of Jean-Pierre's favorite activities is meet- ing people. He says the people at Jordan seem about the same as those at his school in France, x ' fri ndlier. H th t or an h COSMOPOLITAN CLUB e Row 1: B. Simpson, P. Baumgardner, P. Muntaner, L. Starting out strong in the Milk Bowl, Jordan students were optimistic as we headed for our first pre-season encounter with Eisenhower. Losing the season opener 7-6, the team's determination grew stronger as we moved on to face the Downey Vikings. After two defensive struggles, the name Brotherhood became the nickname of the defensive unit. Against the St. Anthony Saints, the Brotherhood turned it on to shut out the Saints 7-0. With the Pius X Warriors now coming in to play, the offense was ready to move. The HMule Train, as they became known, did have a fine offensive game; but this wasnit enough as the Warriors nipped the Panthers 27-15. It wasnit a warm welcome back into the Moore League, as the Big Blue invaded Vets Stadium to take on the Lakewood Lancers. Although the Lancers had a 34-0 victory, the real winners were the Jordan fans and student body who displayed outstanding Spirit and Panther Pride far beyond that of Lakewood High School. The Panthers came back strong to rip the Wilson Bruins 29-20. Hitting hard enough to put a trio of bruised Bruins in the hospital; running hard, throwing with accuracy, and tackling with power, Jordan seemed to recover from a tough loss. Tied for second place at 1-1, the Panthers faced the league leading Millikan Rams. Playing in front of a standing room only and Homecoming crowd, the Rams perfected the wishbone offense and downed the Panthers 30-8. Playing on a muddy field at Wilson, the Panthers faced the Poly Jackrabbits. Jordan, using a multiple pro-type offense, seemed to have the game safe in hand. The Hairs barely nipped the Panthers 21-12. Facing the Compton Tar-Babes and their last Moore League game, Jordan had another disappointing defeat by one point; losing to Compton i3-i2.-Along with the team, Bill Whalin and Randy James as their captains, we will remember this year as Return of the Blue in '72. Jordan fin- ished third in this year's tough Moore League competition with 6 wins and 4 losses. The Jordan cagers made the Lakewood tournament exciting, winning first place. Our team had many standout players such as Larry Hudson, who broke the Moore League all time scoring record in a season with 243 points and was an all league selection, and 67 James Hardy, who led the team in rebounds and blocked shots. They will be returning with outstanding players, Nishel Jackson and Brian Parks next year. Senior Bill Stack, among others, had an out- standing seqson. Paul Sanders, Jerry Schumaker, Randy James, Steve Hansen, and Bob Simien all had good games this season. With four starters returning from this year's team, 1973- 74 should be the year of the Panther. Sanders drives for two points. Darryl Robinson heels for two points against 5'. Panther swimmers were small in number and expe- rience but large in enthusiasm and the willingness to improve themselves. By the end of 1973, Jordan's swimmers improved themselves tremendously. Led by Senior, Joe Gulley and Junior, Mike Kilbur- ger, the Panthers faced stiff competition from the Moore League schools. Joe and Mike proved their strength by setting several school records. On the J.V. level, the powerful Panthers were led by Terry Layne and Daril Johnson. The sophomores, while short on experience, steadily improved as they approached the league meets. They were led by Riley White, David Meyers, and Ron Brown. Coach Dave Timpone is striving for excellence in the Panther Swimmers, and next year promises to be even more rewarding than 1973. Jordan's team consisted mostly of sophomores and iuniors. Other outstanding iuniors for 1973 were Mark Poure, floor exercises and long horse, and Danny James, pommel horse. Both Mark and Danny showed great Moore League potential. On the sophomore level, exceptional gymnasts were Henry Carrillo, Gary Jennings, and Mark Fitch. Crowds of Jordan cheerers, led by the Rowdy Rooters, followed all our teams and gave them their whole-hearted support. A standing room only crowd saw this year's varsity football team play Millikan at Homecoming, and a packed gym watched Larry Hudson and James Hardy break Moore League records while leading the Panther basketball team to their best season in four years. The other teams had their share of support and victory, and all in all, 1972-73 was the year of the spirited cat. 0AA The G.A.A. program at Jordan runs throughout the year, offering Sophomore, Junior, and Senior girls the chance to com- pete in and learn such sports as Touchdown, Tennis, Swimming, Volleyball, Basketball, Modern Dance, and others. In most of the team sports, the girls compete against other schools. The G.A.A. Board, sponsored by Miss Govas, is charged with putting on the New Girl's Tea, two Semester Awards Banquets, and in the last few years, raising money for uniforms. All the girls involved in G.A.A. have helped sell candy bars and cushions to earn money to buy uniforms for the teams. The girls receive awards for stay- ing after school and competing in the playdoys. nJ s and team insignia, as well as individual trophys, are awarded. G.A.A. FALL BOARD e Row 1: D. Barlow, K. Adgcte.
