The snowball building effect which characterizes the growth of human know- ledge also characterizes the growth of problems and obstacles which confront man- kind. The increasing complexity of modern life, invreality, is the way of life. Life is no longer serene, simple, or pastorale on the midwest farm, in Long Beach, in Meridian, or in Saigon. It is a fact of life that we can never return to the peaceful, idyllic good-old-times for which we might yearn. just as surely as scientific discoveries and technical developments will continue to accumulate at an increasing rate, so too will political, economic, philosophic, and moral issues continue to emerge and develop into serious problems more rapidly than they can be recognized and identified, much less anticipated. However dismal such a future may seem, remember that it has ever been thus, and recall that a coin has two sides. The knowledge explosion which spawns problems and conflicts contains the raw materials for solving them. The finding of means for lessen- ing conflicts and solving economic, political, and social problems will require as much investment of our total resources, both human and financial, as we have invested and will continue to invest in the pursuit of scientific knowledge and technical achievement. But it will require your lifelong moral, financial, and personal support to keep the scales in balance. This is your challenge in our times. Milton Sager Principal IN OUR TIMES Perhaps the most significant char acteristics of our age are change and the speed of change Are we running out of new developments and discover ies? Will the speed of change deceler ate? The answer 1S no to both questions The speed with which new discoveries are made and changes are introduced in our lives is constantly accelerating Sociologists call this phenomenon cul tural accumulation Each discovery or innovation is the result of new combina tions and applications of existing know ledge. Each bit of new knowledge along with the body of existing know ledge creates endless possibilities for further discovery and achievement
