Milton Sager, Principal Sputniks, Schools, and Tomorrow Conceived in backwoods poverty and obscurity, nur- tured only by faith in a better tomorrow, the public schools of America have moved from the hearthstones of log cabins to the modern educational plants we know today. In spite of their enormous expansion and their proven successes, the public schools are facing more criticism today than ever before. Our schools are called failures because our scientists failed to orbit the first man-made satellite. Are we assuming that the United States holds exclusive property rights on creative in- telligence and productive capacity? Nevertheless let us concede that our schools should be improved. Where can we begin? A sound educa- tional program requires well trained, capable teachers, adequate worthwhile instructional materials, and young people eager and willing to be educated. The first two conditions are well satisfied in our modern schools. The third condition is partially fulfilled. We have millions of I4 young people on hand, but how eager and willing are they? Those students who are graduating in the class of l958, as well as those yet to come, will someday realize that success in any field of endeavor requires personal sacri- fices. The more alert and mature young people already are aware of this fact: A person must die a little in order to live. Tomorrow will be what you make it today. It will be rooted in the habits you are now forming. If you are willing to sacrifice a few personal pleasures in order to develop good work habits and an attitude of respect for authority your education will have been a success regard- less of the success or failure of the school as such. Edu- cation is extremely personal. You receive from school land lifel that which you put into it. Success or failure is your privilege, not anyone else's responsibility. ,WW 4
