M5 Aw at ffeiiaoaasme ffwfe Jwgg with Strong and Active Faith Jordan's direction has changed hands: yet. our school's direction remains the same. The new director, or principal. has actually made sure that our course is the same as it has been tor over twenty years-torward. Movement forward is evident in terms ot physical growth. more and bigger buildings tilled with more and better equipment. However. we realize that growth cannot always be measured in terms of numbers and sizes. We are happy that the temporary buildings of earth- quake days are gradually being replaced. Jordan's progress can be seen in the architecture ot the new buildings. They represent the ideals ot our own age: honesty and clean- lined simplicity. Moreover, a glance through the pages of this bool: will bring convincing proof that Jordan plots its course. not by mere physical growth. Important. too, is what our school otters to the youth ot today - the social and intellectual experiences available to all Jordanites. Trailblazer, I957 provides a window through which a viewer may see part of our school. Still. even the clearest window gives an incomplete picture of the lite going on behind it. There is much that cannot be shown. There is much that can be known only by the students and the teachers who lived at David Starr Jordan High this year: it is to them that this yearboolr is dedicated. The plan consists of the sale of 50c shares to students. teachers and friends of Jordan High School. The purpose of the exchange student's year in America is to acquaint him with American life and with the ideals. customs, and people to be found here. Likewise. he is an ambassador from his own coun- try and has something to offer Americans in giv- ing us a greater knowledge and understanding of his own nation's lite. However, of greater significance are the si-milari- ties between peoples. At home the student makes speeches to schools and community audiences. He spealns over radio and writes articles 'For various publications. The AFS sponsors a program whereby every American school which has an AFS student is asked to announce the possibility of a student's spending the summer with a 'family abroad. A stu- dent who is outstanding academically and socially, is then selected. Through this program we are heip- ing to build that world of understanding which must be achieved before man attains peace.
