This book is noT iusf The producT of one eighTh period class. IT is The period aT The end of The 1953 school senfence, lno pun infendedl and iT is The producT of The school. Being a period iT can afford To look back wiThouT Tripping because iT is The lasT in a long line of sTudenT produced acTiviTies. If aT Times iT laughs aT you don'T Take iT Too seriously. lT's laughing only because There is somefhing To laugh aT. Even if iT is occasionally serious in The Tradifion of all yearbooks, don'T Take iT Too liTerally. IT is only serious because iT mighT be iudged frivolous if iT were any oTher way. And we can'T be iudged frivolous. This book could, if wanTed To, Talk of The greafness of Jordan in glowing adiecfives. BUT iT won'T because iT agrees wiTh The sTaff ThaT These adiecfives are usually TriTe, banal expressions ThaT while being sincere are a Trifle Too mellow. However, boTh The sTaff and The annual ioin me in hoping ThaT you will enioy reading and looking aT The book as we have somefimes enioyed puTTing iT Togefher. Charles DeRiemer Edifor 'lm A dedication . . Being dedicated to an idea is much more difficult than to a man or men or buildings or so on, When it was decided jlilllil ' that this annual was to be To an idea .J ,FWQ it was tried to find some way of expressing that dedication throughout the annual. This yearbook is dedicated to individuality and it is hoped that the yearbook itself is an individual. By individuality it is meant not being dictated to by ideas or feelings, men, policies and concepts. By individuality it is meant finding That you are a person with the capacity and the right to think for yourself, to express yourself, to believe in yourself, This yearbook is meant to cause thinking . . . If on nothing else but the yearbook. ii-4: q.wA,...4-:gawk no-1-4:11-num .U -' V m ks WWF x, X udministr 'Hon ' Y ! X F I Y , w s ! N, x I N fx f ff M 1 MW ff! :I V N ,y F 1 ! I I l Mr. John W. Every leaf in The forest differsf neighbo rom its rg every snowflake that falls is made from a design never repeated, every shell on The beach, every feature on ones face is forever unique. The stamp of originality The heart is in The mind, and The soul. lt is The value that each alone, has - The Thing for which he is directly responsible To his maker - and which he must develop to The utmost in honor of his God and To The fullest service of his fellow man. The amount he has may be great or small. He can'T determine that - but he can, and must, f labor to bring it to its possible best. lf you can't be a highway then just be a trail, lf you can't be the sun be a star, It isn't by size that you win or you fail - Be the best of whatever you are! Our Student Council this year has done a tremendous amount of work. Yes, without them Jordan would have been unable to function within a democratic framework, This organization represents you in the meetings held every Tuesday in which the problems vital to Jordan are discussed. Girl Yell Leaders, longer lunch periods and other problems have been talked about and answers given. Because of the high quality of our Student Executive Board -- our student body off- icers -- they were able to work with Mr. Cline and with themselves in the planning and presentation of many of the school's activities you have enioyed. Left to right they are, Terry Shroeder, Boys' League, Shaggy Adams, Judge, Nancy Mc Ginn, Secretary, Dale Fairbanks, Student Body President, Sharlene Kelliher, Hostess, Shirley Kuster, Girls' League, and the ab- sentees, Sally J. Too often sports writers and fans tend to iudge the success or lack of same on the part of a team by those statistics appearing under the won and lost column. It is easy to live by such a formula which makes everything either black or white. lt eliminates the necessity of thinking, of weighing, of employing the problem solving technique, lt also eliminates the human element which, in all our lives, is the thing which is of the greatest importance. Our yearbook this year is dedicated to the idea of individuality. It is our theme and we have emphasized it in all the pre- ceeding pages. We shall continue to do so in this sports section. This is much in keeping with the time-honored traditions of the past. The Greeks, in their original Olympic games, which we attempt to duplicate today, pitted individual against individual. lt is interesting to note that even today countries do not compete against countries in trying to score points in the Olympic Games. Each event is separate with medals awarded on performance in that event only. Point totals and scores for the whole event are kept only by newspapers who again are conforming to precedent set by the simplified formula. Thus, to the Trailblazer and the Trailblazer staff T952-53 was a banner sports year. Nearly half our total student body of T650 participated in our combined boys and girls athletic program. There they learned the value of true sportsmanship, the importance of cooperation. There their characters were strengthened and their bodies made stronger. There they became better citizens f and better individuals. Yes it was a banner year. at -. . ,l ' i . IT' L -x C-,,.,,,,,,,,...K,4.,..... The 1952 edition of the Panther grid team was good-good enough to rack up league wins over nearly all conference foes, losing only to the powerful Compton Tartars. But losing to the Tarbabes is no disgrace. In fact, it is becoming a Coast League tradition. i As a prelude to the season, the squad was unveiled against Poly and Wilson in the annual P-TA l Milk Bowl game at Stephens Field. Although it was for milk the boys dialn't strain and had it in the bag against the Bruins winning I2-O in the abbreviated tussle. Against the udder squad-Poly-the Parkemen played a scoreless tie. , The official season opener against Chaffey was rained out and the season was three weeks old i when the locals got their first real test, losing to Inglewood, l3-6. Rocky Kemps golf team enioyed the most successful season in Jordon's history in 1953 as they defeated such teams as Orange, Narbanne, Campion and Anaheim, and scored the maior upset of the year by thumping highly rated Santa Ana. Bob Ashman, Panther tap man, shot the city's lowest score, a 7I at Recreation Park. Kent Goodman shot consistently in the 7O's, and posted o 72 midway in the season. Bob Henderson proved to be a tremendous point getter and had a low round of 76. Wally Fisher had a low round of 75 against Anaheim and Compton. Johnny Harding, a sophomore, may be one of the schools best in the future cs he already has a low round of 77 with two more years of eligibility. Lyle Merrill, also a soph, scored points in important matches as he filled in as sixth man. The team posted II wins during the I3 matches scheduled. Coach Reece's thirty-six man squad slowly molded into a cross country team this year. Though the members of the team did not possess the spark of league champions, by the end ofthe season they were a successful competitive team. Missing few first places for Jordan, Sophomore Don Gilbert was top in the city in addition to being named i'Player of the Year bythe Long Beach In- dependent sports writers. With Don leading the pack of an all returning letter- man team, chances for league championship in i954 are promising. gm--,E M-A-,,,,,,,,. M, ,ke-, ..
