An idea new in the annals of high school history grew out of the work and activities of the Executive Board this year, when these leaders in our school's democratic student government set about solv- ing the wartime increase in juvenile delinquency by establishing a Hi-Teen Canteen. This pro- gressive answer to a serious home front situation obtained its early development in the North Long Beach Y just as did our school whose leaders are picture above. The purpose of the project is to provide mental and physical relaxation to teen agers of the community. ..Dancing, games, and refreshments are made available throughout each of the six week nights. The work was directed by President Jim Booe, his governing body, and the sponsor, Dean of Boys Richard M. Cline. Student Council lst Semester I Row I.- W. Webb B. Kirby B. Adler L. Drake B. McCoy In keeping with American principles of government elected representatives form the Student Coun- cil which is directed by various members of the Executive Board. lt has been their duty to hear and pass on the various proposals of the student body members including all expenditures from the student body fund. Much of their attention has, therefore, been centered on the student govern- ment's afore-mentioned major wartime activity of the year, the Hi-Teen Canteen. They also have had the responsibility of considering and scheduling the many and varied home front drives and campaigns. Their most notable achievements were a bond and stamp sale aggregating 27,000 dollars, a one hundred per cent effort on the Red Cross drive, and a record sale of student body tickets. They also took over the sale of P.-T. A. memberships and went more than a hundred above the goal of three hundred. Other activities of a similar nature, such as paper and scrap drives which were sponsored by various groups, were made successful through the backing of our student council. Over 300 boxes were collected through the sixth period classes and mailed by the league officers and committee members. Representatives to this organization are elected by the girls from their classes. They are responsible for such worthy activities as the above and others which are of special interest to the girls. Among their outstanding social functions have been the Mother-Daughter Tea, the ln- stallation Banquets, and a semi-annual Senior Breakfast. The sponsor is Mrs. Jo Voorhees. To aid in the extension of friendly relationships among the high schools, members of Hi Tri and Hi Y sponsor activities of both social and service nature and promote assemblies, banquets, and dances. The Hi Tri is connected directly with the Young Women's Christian Association, and strives for greater fellowship among the girls at Jordan with Mrs. Hope Coin as its sponsor. The Hi Y has the same purpose, is a part of the Young lVlen's Christian Association, and is sponsored by Mr. Vance Davis. Now a tradition at Jordan, the Loud Socks dance served again as the peak of the social season for the Hi Y. Royal Scepters son, M. Cleveland, B. Kidd M. Black, M. Warren, V Sanders, V. Pease, I. The Swing Band has made rapid progress and has filled a niche in the social life of our high school since it was organized in l94O under the leadership of Woodley Scofield and sponsored by Carl C-. Lindgren, faculty adviser. Jay Cox succeeded to leadership in l942. Under Cox the member- ship was enlarged and citywide reputation was gained. Phil Rominger was elected head of the group in i943 and the band's popularity hit a new high. Featured at school dances, U. S. O. parties, and fraternal organizations, the Swing Band attained highest recognition and has been in great demand for performances of all types. Always on call for U.S.0. performances and pep assemblies, the band was one of the hardest work- ing organizations on the campus. Uniting with the Boosters in the football season the group pre- sented exhibitions that have given them an enviable reputation in the Southland. New problems faced the students therefore, new information was sought, and provision had to be efficient and complete to fit in with the needs of a war era. The natural center for such re- search was the school library. Though the primary purpose of library practice is to become more familiar with library facilities, student members of this group served to make those facilities more readily available to students preparing to serve their country in a multitude of ways. Miss Hazel Zimmerman is the sponsor and head librarian. Furnishing schoolwide publicity second to none for all activities, the Campus Display class was a factor in the success of the projects of many other groups. A continuous succession of window displays, charts and thermometers reporting progress in various drives, and posters encourag- ing assistance in providing addresses of and for servicemen are samples of the effort put forth by this group in cooperation with other school organizations, Besides these new and added re- sponsibilities caused by the school's home front war effort, the usual artistic array of posters and publicity for social, athletic, and other functions were supplied. The Cat's Purr Staff sent papers to over 300 alumni servicemen each week during this school year, its third with a printed paper, and thus found its niche in the home front war effort. With eighty percent of the student body backing the paper through subscriptions, the staff and its sponsor, Mr. Gary Lynes, did not allow the many war time obstacles faced to cause any of the thirty regularly scheduled issues to be missed. The paper did much to provide a source of infor- mation necessary to the students and to build and maintain morale at home and abroad. We still continued to eat even though the student store sales were curtailed somewhat because of the war time conditions. Separate booths in the store segregated the various types of food sold and made them available with greater speed and efficiency. This was another way in which the school adapted itself to the speeded up program necessitated by hurried student defense workers who needed to restore their energies at lunch time. The store was also open during activ- ity periods to aid in energy replenishing and relaxation. lt was the regular stopping place for the habitual purchaser of war stamps as well as the consumer of food and beverages. Jack Harber, Captain The opening of school found Jordan in a new and difficult league as a result of the needs of a nation at war. Our teams now were to meet the other two Long Beach high schools, Wilson and Poly, and the nearby Compton Tartars. The loss by graduation of many members of the previous year's great teams made the new and more powerful athletic rivals seem all the more formidable. Gone were twenty-seven gridmen, twelve basketball players including the entire varsity first team, five of the baseball regulars, and seventeen trackmen. Most of these men were already in the armed services. A turnout of over 140 boys in the opening days of football practice brightened the athletic picture considerably. From this grOup the new Coach, Irv Phillips, formerly of the junior college, welded a team composed of five veterans, four former B players, and two trans- fers. Though unusually light for the competition they were to meet, the varsity showed through the prolonged pre-season practice game schedule that it would make up in spirit what it lacked in size and experience. With the same determination the B squad proved to be of near-championship calibre. C02 c fl Forecasting the spirited, though losing battles that were to mark the season, the varsity thrill- ed the crowd with two spectacular touchdowns while losing to a heavier Inglewood team by a 32 to l4 score in the first game. Jack Saling, Neil Kinrade, and Captain Jack Harber combined a pass and lateral for one score, and Kinrade returned a kickoff 82 yards for the other. Outweighed again in its next practice game the Panther team roared back in the fourth quarter in the face of a twenty-point lead by Leuzinger to drive 60 yards for a touchdown. Paul Mears plunged over for the tally. ln the first league game of the season our Blue and White team fought to the final gun literally, as it scored its only touchdown in the last forty-five seconds of play as Wilson High went on to win with 21 points. Poly added a second league loss the following week by a 24 to O score. With a much-needed breathing spell before its final league game with Compton, the team picked itself up from four consecutive losses only to be set down again by Pomona 20 to O in a night game. The never say die spirit shown in these games did much to put Captain Jack Har- ber on the first team all-league backfield and to bring second team selections to tackle ECI C0d0I'12. center Dick Turner, and back Paul Mears. ha ! With a dismal record of five defeats, including a two-to-nothing blanking in competition in the new league, the home eleven faced a final game with the undefeated Compton club which needed only a victory over Jordan to clinch an undisputed league championship. ln earlier games the Tartars' powerful ground attack combined with the passing ability of Duke Snyder had been too much for Wilson, Poly, and Leuzinger, all three of whom had been victors over Jordan. These facts, how- ever, had no effect on a fighting Panther eleven that day as they pushed a supposedly formidable Compton team into impotency before a wildly cheering homecoming crowd. lt was the passes of Jack Saling and the plunges of Jack Harber and Paul Mears that went unstopped. Neil Kinrade made a beautiful left-handed snag of a Saling pass over the goal line to score the game's lone touch- down after Harber and lviears had combined to carry the ball into scoring position. Harber kicked the important extra point. Center Dick Tucker had previously given these boys their opportunity by recovering a Tartar fumble deep in Jordan territory. Only the half-time gun prevented a sec- ond Jordan touchdown. As brilliant in defense in the second half as they had been on offense in the first, the home club threw back every Compton drive and batted down countless long Snyder passes as the slow-moving hands of the timekeeper's watch gradually ticked out a Compton defeat. The final pass, a 68-yard effort, was caught on the Jordan twenty, but an alert back downed the runner as the gun sounded to let the thrill-weary fans leave the edges of their seats and wend their respective ways home. No Jordan team ever entered the field with a poorer record and none ever left it in greater glory. S . si a t Two wins, three losses, and one tie tell the story of the Bee football season... They opened against the Sentinels from Inglewood and lost this game by a l4 to 7 score. In their second game against Leuzinger they fought to a scoreless tie. ln the first league game the team was outpassed by a better club from Wilson High School. The score was Zl to 7, but the game was not won until the second halt. ln the next game with the Poly Jackrabbits they scored a l9 to 7 victory to gve them their second win of the season. A win over Compton in the final game would have given the Panthers a tie with them for the league title. There was hope because of the successes of the last two games. lt was not to be, however, as the team lost by one conversion point, the final score being 7 to 6. Row I.-B. Baker, C. Poff, D. With a double win over the Pilots from Excelsior as the highlight of the season, the varsity basketball team came through with a record of seven wins to nine losses. Leuzinger was the first team on the schedule in a home and home seriesg the Panthers lost the first game 21 to 8, but just reversed the score the second time, winning Zl to 8. The powerful Santa Ana Saints came next and won by a 27 to 2l score. Over the Christmas holidays the team went to the Hunt- ington Beach tournament. ln the opening round they beat Brea Olinda l7 to ll, but lost in the quarter finals to Newport Harbor by a 37 to 26 score. Then they fell before Beverly Hills 37 to l8, but came back in the next game to beat Avalon 39 to 23. The Squad then made if four in 8 FOW when they downed Excelsior by the same score tWlCe-39 to 23. and Santa Ana 41 to 35. LOS- ing first to Wilson in the league opener, Jordan then went up against Poly, the league champions, and lost 27 to l7, and then were taken by Compton 30 to 26. ln the second round the home club took Wilson into camp 3l to 28, but lost to Poly and Compton. The latter was a 22 to l9 thriller. Phil Rominger got the nod as all-league forward while Jack Wheeler was an all-city choice at guard. ali Bee Basketball Row I.- R. Phares E. Mitchell D. Grisham M. Bill Pringle and Bill Wilson proved to be the scoring punch in these early games while Captain Mark Mulholland, Roy Phares, and Ed Mitchell showed well defensively. A loss to Beverly Hills and two more to Excelsior left the team with a two wins and four losses record for the season. ln a return game the Panthers edged Santa Ana 28 to 26. The game was a thriller in which the home team had to go into an overtime session to win. A long shot by Hugh Dillon spelled the margin of victory. ln the league Jordan lost twice to each school, Poly, Wilson, and Compton, but most games were close. Typical of the heart- breaking losses the team suffered in league play was the one point loss to Poly. Weakened at mid-season by the transfer of several point winners to the Bee squad in order to bolster the championship possibilities there, the varsity track team sacrificed any chance of a successful season. The Panthers opened competition by beating Excelsior 59 to 44 while the varsity was still at full strength. This meet produced many of the stars of future engagements. The team was paced by Jim Sargent, star hurdler, who later became captain of the Bee squad. Sargent won both the l2O-yard high hurdles and the 220-yard lows. Another winner was Bill Holzgraf, star dashman and one of the leading contenders for C. l. F. honors. Jordan entered her second meet with San Pedro and lost 6l to 43. Again Bill Holzgraf and Sargent starred, l-lolzgraf winning the dashes and Sargent the hurdles, ln the all-city meet l-lolzgraf, Sargent, and Rominger were placed on the Bee squad to strengthen it, so the Panthers only placed two A men. Jack Minar, high hurdler, and Paul Mears, broad jumper. Jordan then opened the league season with a loss to Wilson 85 to l8 as the squad was again without the services of the big three . Ending the dual season the Blue and White lost to the powerful Poly Jackrabbits and to the Tar- tars from Compton, although very nearly beating the latter. Bee Track Vance Davis, coach Row l.- J. Smalley Row II.- B. Vernon C. Ritchie D. Berg G, Childers P. Straub C. Pace D. Rose Joaquin Miller, coach Roy Phares, captain The tennis team rang up one of the best records of the season. The squad found itself at mid- season undefeated in its first six games, with the rest of the matches against teams already beaten. The team had opened by walking away from San Pedro twice by scores of 8 to 2 and 8 to 3, respectively, to show that it was the team to beat in the Long Beach-Compton league. ln the third match the Colonists from Anaheim Union High School fell to Jordan, 7 games to 4, thus giving Jordan its third straight victory. Opening the league season, with great hopes for a championship, the Blue and White whipped the Bruins from Wilson 6 to 5. Poly's Green and Gold, next on the schedule, also fell by a score of 6 to 5 to give Jordan undisputed lead in the race. The Compton Tartars met the Panthers next and failed when they lost 7 to 4. Each score was close and Jordan seemed to make a habit of coming from behind to win. In the first match of the second round, however, the club was nipped by Wilson 6 to 5. lt then re- covered to take Poly again, this time by the same score. The Blue and White team lost all chances for the title as they lost to the Compton Tartars by a 7 to 4 score. The J. V. tennis team ended this season with a record of two wins and two defeats, beating Wilson twice and losing to Poly twice, G. A. A. lst Semester Row I.- B. Norman J. Jeffries M. Taylor M. Veale D.
