Our fathers conquered a physical wilderness, They Eeveled forests. bridged mighty rivers. tunneled majestic mountains, subdued a savage racel and destroyed vicious beasts, leaving behind them a land watered bv their sweat and their tears. rich with their sacrifice and planted deep with their ideals. We stand upon the Atlantic shore of social and Spiritual waste. We hope that our schoolt true to its namesake and the questing spirit of pioneers of every western frontier, shall be 3 Plymouth Rock from whose firm foote hold shall spring a continuous stream of hardy souls whose faces are lifted toward the far away shore of a new Pacific. Men and women, who. in these halls now so new. but which time shall hallow and make sacred in and to their memory. shall have touched hands with the great cultural heritages of all time and all lands. shall have learned from the great spirits of the ages and their own experiences such a measure of true greatness as shall cause them to reflect courage, tolerance. justice. industry. fortitude. love and culture. in their personal living and social relations to the end that they shall consecrate themselves to the fulfillment of the American dreamy It shall be their pillar of fire by night and their cloud by day. They shall be the sons of the lighted lamp and the girded loin. They shalt seek the truth with unflagging zeal. even with broken fingers and bleeding hearts, and they shall demand the same right for all men, They shall be the evangelists of justice when poverty fronts wealth. when the humbler race faces the arrogant. when social. economic. or re- ligious groups stand at grips; when the conquered trembles before the con- queror, they must brave the passion of affluence. pride. bigotry and power, to the end that, finally, in no realm or sphere shall there be a Punic victory or a Carthaginian peace to tester and poison the souls of men. There shall be ushered in the time when the common sense of most shall hold a fretful realm in awe and the kindly shall slumbery lapt in universal lawt'l They shall believe in the sacredness of personality of all persons. regardless of race. color, creed. or oosition. Christianity teaches the brother- hood of man. democracy hi5 equality Common law says his house is his castle. They must prove that his soul is his kingdom. a sovereignty carrying an obligation to him to make it divine, but which no person on earth may trespass. Sons and daughters of Jordan! The years will make your number legion and if you are true to your school. to its namesake. to the American dream. to the spirit of the pioneere this shall be your Grail.
