Home Economics Each day a home economics teacher must tace scores of girls seeking knowledge of the domestic sciences. Under her patient guidance the girls learn the answer to questions such as, What is back stitching, cinyway'P At David Douglas the opportunity to learn the art ot being a homemaker is given all tour years. For seniors who have not taken home ec, a course in home management is offered which concentrates on several subiects includ- ing family budgeting and child care. The intention of this course and all courses offered by the department is to prepare the girls for their lite after high school, The home ec girls prepare to cut their masterpiece. To get a top iob in the business world you have to spend much time and energy developing your tal- ents. Aided by the experienced teachers, students are prepared to enter the business world with a broad knowledge of office practices. Through the courses offered the students learn the use of business machines, typing and shorthand skills, and also busi- ness law and recordkeeping to better their chances for the big iob. Through the courses in drama, speech, music, and art, the department encour- ages the student to develop his capabilities in the field of humanities. By means of competitive speech tournaments, dramatic school plays, in- strumental and vocal concerts, and field trips to such institutions as the Portland Art Museum, the highly qualified staff has been able to develop in their pupils a keen sense of appreciation for the liberal arts.
