This is a story of sixty-one of the most courageous and daring young adventurers of today. Yes, these sixty-one make up the graduating class of 1949. Four years ago, these young people set out on a journey, a long, hard journey, one which they hoped would some day lead them to the land of unlimited treasure. In that first year they were guided over steep cliffs and through rugged can- yons by their class sponsors, Miss loan Hoffman and Mr. Vauck, with the help of Norman Muntz, president, lack Nichols, vice-president, Peggy Bechius, secretary, lean Martin, treas- urer. Iohn Schlentz was student council representative. The class readily adapted itself to school activities and was soon on its way to success. Morris Clemmer, Donald Danaher, Evelyn From, Eugene Glock, Fllgene Grubaugh, Darrell Curtis, Henry DeFord, Donald Glock, Ianet Glock, Beryldene Hasik. X6 5 'Q .Q 'Pb- -1' gr-. Their fine cooperation and activity give promises of an exceptional senior class for next year. Officers for the year were president, Mar- vin Craigg vice-president, Gary Widleg secre- tary, Eugene Sobolik, treasurer, George Hain. Their very helpful sponsor was Miss Edith Roos. The first activity that this year's Specu- lators undertook with their customary energy was the production of the class play, Great Expectations, at the auditorium Ianuary 7 and 8. This play, written by Charles Dickens, was the first serious type play to have been put on by the school in many years. Ht the end of the sophomore year they must pass an intelligence test with an average grade, then they must take teacher's training l and ll in their junior and senior years. Plnd the results proved very favorable. The play was such a hit that it brought in more money than any other previous school production. The play was under the direction of our very cheerful, very earnest, and very able speech instructor, Mr. Rex Coslor, with hard-working Mary Lou l-lomolka and Kathryn Baker as stu- dent directors. Then dramatists, singers, band players, FFR speakers, chorus groups, and band -fi, all made a mad scramble for it. We have been trying to build up in- terest in the speech department through- out the entire student body this year. The encounters of the speech department and its members have been successful so far and we hope that next year we will see new laces in speech so that the ltEn- tertainers' can really put on a Mbig showing. The play, written by Charles Dickens, was of a serious type and proved to be a successful show. The play was not only a source of entertainment but it was also a source of education as members of Mr. Coslor's English classes will well remember. lt was obvious that learning their parts was not the only duty of the cast. Several new ideas and stage techniques were used. The cast and stage hands built a flexible set which may be used for other plays in the future. Playing a musical instrument always seems to be a favorite pastime when day is done. The David City students like to do it any time, that is why they have organized such a good band. This body of fifty-six music- makers, including several majorettes, is di- rected by Mr. C. Q. Crandell. Besides the school activities, the band also takes part in many out-of-town activities. Hmong these are the Nebraska State Fair, the Platte County Fair, University Band Day, and the Butler County Fair. ln the spring music clinic, which was held March 29, the band was directed by Professor Carl Forsberg, director of the instrumental music department of Midland College. The band gave two concerts this winter, one on Sunday, February l3, and the other March 13. The year was highlighted by the music contest held at Fremont on Ptpril 8 in which not only the band but also several small groups and soloists took part.
