A huge, bewitching moon rises, as it were, out of the softly rippling sea and creeps up the southern sky, throwing silvery shadows through the palm leaves rustling in a caressing night wind. One bar of moonlight is filtered down onto a little hut set back from the beach. Through an aperture on the far side exudes a mystic, greenish vapor. A murmuring of voices ensues. In this little dwelling, around an old wormfeaten table is seated an ancient, wrinkled, soothsayer and an entranced group of eager listeners. The aged man is a fortunefteller, His cohorts are a group of graduates of the February 1934 Class of Oliver High. XVe are looking into the future on this magical, Hawaiian night, attempting to see ourselves and cur classmates as we will be ten years in the future. At last! The crystal is clearing, and the seer begins to chant as it directs. The enthralled group leans forward curiously, and peers into its depths. We see: A busy American Airport. A huge Transport Liner is about to take off and the Gross Country Mail is to follow it immediately. The respective pilots are shakf ing hands and wishing each other good luck. They are none other than Harp Haselton and William Johnston. We manage to follow them, and at another airf port along the route we see a milling crowd gathered. Ah, yes, there is to be a stunt exhibition this day. We watch the pilot. Vv'ho is he? W'hy, itis Joseph Corbett! And there is Helen Ogilvie, famous aviatrix and parachute jumper. Well, at least she is bound to come down. Phylis Hammerle, the vivacious woman ref porter, is covering this story. A scoop for her! But what of our other pilots- those who take care of the precious United States Mail? This particular plane finally reaches California, where Earl Lehman energetically transfers the mail to his Orient-bound plane. It's a small world after all! Out in the mountainous for' ests of the West we suddenly spy a terrific forest fire, sweeping the beautiful mounf tain side, carrying destruction and desolation in its wake. But Wait! There is Henry Bauman, high up in his rangers' tower, frantically sending signals. George Forsythe accurately reads his waving hands, and the fire is soon under control. just a. littlc farther on we catch sight of a large touring car. With the aid of our telescope, we are 'able to recognize the passengers. Guess who? Virginia Bishirjian, with Stella Lesek as her companion, traveling and sightseeing. In a short time, due to the marvelous facilities of modern travel, we,find our' selves back in New York. Along one of the quiet, shady streets, cn the outskirts of the town, is being erected a magniliicent municipal hospital. A famous million' aire named Mac Smith is the kindly benefactor. The exclusive staff will include such famous doctors and surgeons as James Donaldson, Edwin McNeil, and David Graham. The trained nurses in this new hospital are to be Louise Morrow, Helen Kokosh, Emma Aveard and Geraldine Hempleman. Margaret McElroy will be head dietician. Farther uptown, as we look down fashionable Fifth Avenue we see Margie Steck entering her smart fashion shop. Dorothy Frew, her partner, awaits her coming. The two are designing the apparel sold in their shop. Farther down the avenue we chance to hear strains of wa piano. In a splendid music hall, Robert Auron is playing before a breathless, sophisticated New York audience. He, however, nonchalantly maintains that he would much rather be playing for his own amuse' ment. Finally, turning onto famed 42nd Street, we come to the offices of Harold Daniels, the musical comedy director. Poor Daniels, dancers and actresses are in' corrigible! Nearfby his office is the wellfknown law building of Geraci, Lenger, Peg e Thirty-three l 1 4.1. THE OMICRON OH, WELL WALK .' BiG STUFF iff SJ EXAMS YOU ,fp si 3 Page Thirty-'Four CLASS OF FEBRUARY, l934 and Pecci, Inc. We always said they were prevaricators. In the main New York library we come upon Ruth Murphy and Margaret Netreba, both having succeeded in becoming head librarians. Before leaving New York, -a short jaunt down to the docks is made. Here we find William May about to embark on a short trip to the Azores in his 2Offoot yacht-merely a little pleasure hop, don' cha know? Carrie Lee, passing us swiftly, calls over her shoulder that she is in a hurry to get back to her nursing staff wat the Harlem Hospital. Forced to stop for oldftime's sake, she informs us that Ruth Clark is a nurse there, and after we make inquiry she ref veals the fact that Troy Williams is a noted pharmacist, Ned iSpells has been quite successful as a Linotypistg and Woody Parker is an Athletic Director at one of the city high schools. As we are making preparations to lefave, John Daniluck rushes up to interview us. We oblige him, afterward continuing our swift trip. We land in Philadelphia. Here we pause before a wellfknown construction company. Able draftsmen are busily at work. Among them are Jack Caughey, Joe Nichols, Robert Parker, and Clifford Knecht. Two more of this efficient staff are Henry Uifelman and Richard Neelians. They preside in the accountancy department. In a large business firm on Market Street, Francis Burry, and his partner, William Krause strut around look' ing important. Realized ambitions? A sudden commotion, making even the blase Philadelphians stop wand Stare, is heard. A wildflooking figure comes tempetuously out, with arms waving frantically. Oh, it is Wallace Irwin, eccentric inventor that he is. The cause of this excitement? Wallace has made an extremely wonderful invention. It's-well-Oh, it's a school day without eight periods or nightwork. What 'a help to crushed and oppressed knowledgefseekers! Famous reporters and journalists such as Howard Baier and Ruth Rock are hurrying to get the inside dope. We are wafted to the nation's capital. There the President, Harry Staudenf maier, is holding an important cabinet meeting. His right hand, figuratively speak' ing, Eloise Fisher, quietly and efficiently does her office work, Ethel Evans is conf versing with her employer, the Secretary of the Treasury. Finally, back to good old Pittsburgh, from whence we were graduated. In an immense office building we see the two executives, Alex Mzammfay and Alvin Krapp. They are constantly dickering, like the best friends are in a habit of doing. Their office force, which runs like a piece of well-oiled machinery, is comprised of Bella Ainis, Kaleen Clutter, Thelma Eck, Betty Nicholson, LaVerne Stringefrt, Stella Spitt, Thelma Kurtz, Dorotha Rutledge, Ruth Izenour, Anne Benvenuto, Dorothy Beck, Verna Kohut, Ruth Connell, and Martha Davies. Tihey are all busy and silent as bees. Grace Simpson, having finally graduated from Tech, is the private secretary. A large auditorium, filled to capacity is enthralled by the playing of Eleanor Buubach, famous concert pianist. 'She is playing a return engagement to her home town. Our vision is next attracted by a sign reading, Magivern and Nemeth-Dancf ing Studio. A sporting goods store just a short distance away is owned by George Ploesch. Ann Corbett, one of Horne's most trusted buyers, is viewing 'his goods. We spy a newspaper on the corner newstand. On the society page we read of the wedding of Audrey Neaman--and she is not yet SO! Whatfa relief! Is -seems that john Ja' nosko acted as the official photographer while the wedding was taking place. Now Rose Scigliano, Audrey's social secretary, is going to be busy. In the foreign departf ment of sa large bank we see Rose Mueller and Martha Ihsen, interpreters. In a large, exoticflooking roof garden we suddenly come upon john Marx, Joe Rush, Robert Page Thirty-five M. V l SM THE OMICRON Snyder, and Robert Carpenter, collaborating on their masterpiece, How To Make A Success in Life After Graduation. Cf course they are wellfinformed. Lenwood Morgan has had luck enough to be able to print their first edition. Suddenly we see our Alma Mater. Their is William McLinden, the Physical Education teacher. Normuan Frederick, assistant, stands at his elbow. Remember, Norm was the gentleman who wanted to become a good gym teacher? Visiting Cliver is Sophia Kendzior, a social worker and benefactoress. just down the street, over a building, is the sign, Stanley Buick, Funeral Director and Embalmerf' Nice location! Westward Ho! again. Going over Springfield, Ohio, we see ia football game played by the college. It is one of the greatest victories in the history of the school, and the hero is none other than Don Payne, erstwhile football player, class president, etc. William Price, a big politician of the town, is trying to persuade the people to vote for him for mayor, promising thiat he will faithfully uphold his fellow citizens. Bernard Gruseck, gentleman of leisure, and general manfaboutftown, acf companies him throughout his campaign. A dainty little tea room, owned by Milf dred Johnston, is on the outskirts of the town. Next stop-Hollywood. City of magic, City of dreams! A picture, in produc' tion is being rehearsed. The renowned Frank Himber is the leading man. As he leaves his work for the day he consults the :architect Robert Baker, who is planning his home. Pearl Young and Lenore Miller, interior decorators, are collaborating with him in the building of the beautiful Beverly Hills mansion. A new beauty shoppe is being opened by Anna Stumpf to take care of jaded Hollywood sirens. On'Hollyf wood Boulevard we run across Joe Sayut, who tells us that he and Walter Vaughn are leaving immediately for Chicago, to take over a large engineering project. We are taken out to an island off the Pacific. Here Raymond Keay is playing Robinson Crusoe--just for adventure. Down in India Richard Byrnes, Richard Kozell, and Robert Swagler are on their way around the world. They relate some of their experiences, and tell us that Norman White is engineering a huge construcf tion job in the southern section of the country. Peter Similik, who has had many a hairfraising adventure, leaves us to board his ship. Over in England, Mavis Mc' Chesney is being feted for having swum the English Channel in recordfbreaking time. This the first attempt in the space of the years. Here we also see Luella Hetrick, who has just completed a walking tour through Switzerland. Rather bumpy walking, we'd say. She tells us that she met joe -Ranallo selling razor blades. And so back to good old U. S. A., where Morris Katz is opening his new business office. He's chatting with Amos Hartman, manfaboutftown, and Mike Nakoneczny, just off for a good time. We're suddenly back at our starting point--sunny Hawaii. There, basking in a southern sun and plucking coconuts and bananas are Helen Heath, Charlotte Sullivan, Peter Zaitsoff, and Leo Desimone. Don't worry, they're young Yet. They'll make up their minds some day. Everything fades. Instead of rosy dreams and hallucinations, the pupils of the class see only the old man. For a brief moment, the hush that has fallen is kept, but then the students begin to clamor for more. No, no, says the wrinkled being, I can show You no more. The spell is hrokenf' Disappointed, boy and girls file out. Comments are ,heard about the wonderful prowess of the apparently ignorant old seer. He has made them see years ahead, showing them, for the most part, that their dreams and ambitions are coming true. The greenish light fades, all is silent once more as the Hawaiian isliand settles down to slumber-all, that is, excepting the queer old soothsayer, who stays 'bent over his crystal, waiting for more willing persons who will pay him to tell their fortune.
