SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President john Kotchin VicefPresident f f Robert Canning Secretary Uclwiga Plukis Treasurer f Joseph Siegrnan Reporter f f f f f William Jones Class Colors -- Red and White Class Flower - Red Rose SPONSORS Miss Hankey Miss Kelly ASSIRO ANESIN Honey A Sugar is sweet and Honey is too Look across here and say that's true. Short and sweet, witty and wise, 'Tis a fact, no one denies. 2 MILDRED BARLOW 46MillY! 7 Mi1ly's a happy optimist Who's cheerful at all timesg A journalist of note is she, And shines at making rhymes. JOHN B1LoTTA He's another quiet member of the class Cn his looks and brains he will pass. He gives the ladies all the air He's quite sarcastic to the fair. ROBERT CANN IN G HB0b93 Now here's a boy who for money surely does not hanker, For don't you see, dear people, he is the class' bankerg And in his present position, it does not seem so funny That Bobby should be forever always asking for money. ALBERT CHESTNUT A Chestnut means an old story, A plain nut means one who is queer, But Albert means one that is clever And rustles copy for our Omicron dear. MARJORY CLAIR Marge This girl's as meek as Moses With the patience of a saint, Aside from this, she's all O. K., We haven't a complaint. RUSSELL CONEBY Ben Franklin was a printer, Yet he became quite great, So Russel keeps on setting type From early morn till very late, Perhaps a hundred years from now A laurel wreath may crown your brow! WAFFORD DAILEY Wafl'ord's big and blond and handsome, But he has one terrible fault It's not the failing of a saint To make one believe you're what you aint LANCE DUGGER Good old Lance, so staunch and true He's the one to see, when you feel blueg Out on the gridiron he mothered the team He was so very skillful-we always just beam. T MARGARET ECK Hpeggyv At times she's sedate and quiet, She hides her thoughts away And then her lively spirit Bursts forth, and all is gay. MARGARET FEIGH CCpeggy79 Fie! Margaret Feigh Don't cast your eye, On a youth who sings and dances. The Price is too highg And e're you die, You will have other fancies. MICHAEL FRANZAK CGMike9! Silence is golden, so the sage's story rang The only time our Mike talks is when he's with the gang. WILLIAM EARL FREW SCROSYD This is Earl of the Burning Locks- An advertising manager unique, If you are looking for argument, This is the man to seek. JOHN FULLERTON rffrwanv Now dear people, when you look at this picture Don't think for one minute that we are mistaken Fore we made sure each one's picture was takeng For this one is John, the other is Wilbur. WILBUR FULLERTON E ccvvibbyn The next one a twin like the one before, In fact he is his brother, And both of them look so much alike You can't tell one from t'other. I can't add any more for him, be that as it may, He's so much like his brother, there's nothing more to say. OLIVER GOLIAN Ollie Bon jour, bon jour, mes amies, Says our Oliver Golian, Because to be a Frenchman He's trying all he cang So he greets his many class mates In the language so romantic, But to read his English essays Nearly drives his teachers frantic. FLORENCE JOHNSON Our Florence is very quiet And she studies all the while, Tho' she doesn't start a riot She does have a lovely smile. WILLIAM JONES HBO!! Bo is a piccola player, A bandsman of renown. He sleeps through English classes And is never known to frown. ANNA KAPURKA 66Ann77 This one little maid so independent Refuses to have a male attendantg She's almost always full of fun and spice She may be independent, but she's very very nice. JOHN KOTCHIN Big John He towers over common folk In size and mind as well, And quite a lady's man is he In this he does excel. SYLVIA LIPTZ Gisyln Oh, Syl is such a jolly girl And makes so many friends, Whatever she starts in to do She'll stick until the end. FRANK MEKOVSKY CII-Iunkff Now Andy W. Mellon handles the money of our nation And on the staff of the Omicron, Hunk has a similar stationg If Frank keeps up at his present great speed, He'll be the only treasurer our nation will need. ANNA LOUISE MEYERS Anne She's very conscientious, All her work she does quite wellg She looks so proper and sedate- But you can never tell. JOHN MUHLHEIZLER They tell me he's bashful, But I dunno. Still water runs deep- So may John, you know! ALICE MUTH HAI!! Alice is a quiet lass, Demure and studious she, Her other virtues we might state But haven't space, you see. RUSSELL MCBRIDE CCRuSs!9 Our Russ is a footfball hero, A musician of some fame, He's interested in a little girl With an airy, fairy name. f MARY McCANN 'Tis a sweet Irish colleen, named Mary McCann, Writes things for our paper in an illigent hand, Shure she's popular, witty, can sing like a lark, Oh, pity the gossoon, she'll soon break his heart! L' AUGUSTA MCCORD GGG!-1577 Now Gus will sometimes hesitate To state just what she knows, But once she gets those ballets on- Oh then, just watch her toes. WILBUR NICHOLL C 6Lucky77 A Nichol isn't much to spend On Wilbur chocolate bars But here we have a lad so full of fun He keeps dull care upon the run. UDWIGA PLUKIS Ciwiggiev And now the next dear class mate is very hard to beat, She's very nice and pleasant and one great athlete. Of sports that are known, I think she loves them all, But the one sport she loves best is basket' ball. MARY ROBERTSON HCOXY!! Of Oliver O's she hasua number Oh, Mary is our athlete, She's always on the jump and go And we know she can't be beat. FLORA SCHOTT GCFIOH The social bee is a target small For Flora Schott's high aim, She had ambitions far too great For the midfyear class of '28. JOSEPH SEIGMAN Chizzy He who fights and runs away Will live to fight another day. Our L'Chizzy on the grid says this: I'll run and run, till the ball they missg For he who lights and runs away Will be the hero of the day. at MILDRED SMITH SCSis,, She's good in almost any sport, Most anything she'll dare. We all like Sis's friendly smile, She's sure a classmate rare. STEWART SMITH ffsfewv Take a lump of Senior Editor, Add a bit of acting smart, Take of brains a plenty- Though he doesn't show them olfg Add a dash of real good fellow And a heart that's brave and true, Stir them all together for a fine Smith Stew. JANE STANGER A sweet little miss A petite little miss One we'll all miss, Bluefeyed Jane. JOHN SEBIS A poet's brow with waving locks, Reminds our class of Byrong john Sebis as our editor Resembles that great lion. But writing for the Omicron Is easy with a-lexicon. JAMES STERLING CCI-Iungry! 7 Sterling means pure silver Free from all alloy and dross, Therefore James has much to strive for, Or his name will lose its gloss. ADIE STEVENS Jack Sac 'Tis here we pen a line or so Of Adie's wondrous artg In school or out, where 'ere he he, He'll take a leading part. BETTY STONE 'Tis said Helen of Troy was a Titian blond, Who caused many hearts to flutterg ' But in the class of '28, quite a few met their Fate When Betty Stone stepped out to conquer. IVERNIA TEATHER CCIVYS7 The poets sing of England's rose, But here we have transplanted Our Ivy: ever staunch and true, That knits together Hrm as fate The class of 1928. JACK WATT Our clever, goodflooking staff artist will fill you full of bliss, If you want to know L'Watt he looks like, just glance across from this. All the art for the Omicron through his hands must passg If you'll but examine it you'll see that he has class. ROBERT YOUNG ECBob7, A quiet young fellow With lofty aim, An earnest worker, He'll come to fame. Joi-IN MILLER Charm , Our charming Charm says one who knows He's a football hero, and Oh! my! oh! He's a blushing boy with a bashful past But in athletics he certainly is fast. QQ CLASS or FEBRUARY 1928 QQ Loq of The S. S. Glivernii-1 from Februaru 1925 to Fc-:bruarq 1928 Cn a cold day in February, in the year of 1924, a brave crew of inexperienced and deathfdefying sailors settled in the colony of Irwinia. It was here, that with splendid cooperation, the crew proposed to build a large steamer and name it after their beloved idol, David B. Oliver' FEBRUARY 1925 A. D. A great throng of people were seen admiring a steamship bearing the letters, S. S. OLIVERNIA. Looking through a powerful telescope, tiny specs of people could be seen miles away crowding anxiously to catch a glimpse of the famous steamer. At last the LEVIATHAN had met its match. The steamer was inf deed, a product of beauty, being designed by such worldfknown artists as Ollie Golian, Honey', Anesin, Jack Watt, and Betty Stone. Pennants bearing the ship's motto On, Sail On could be seen fluttering in all directions. As the steamer was leaving port, enroute to the land of Graduation, strains of the Oliver Hymn could be heard. MARCH 1925 A .D. First red letter day arrives-Marjorie Clair, one of the finest members falso smartestj of our crew on board is appointed the first secretary of the Oliver High Students' Association. Waford Dailey, 'Llike father, like son, inherits from his dad the art of directing traffic in the halls. Watch your step, Superintendent Walsh, or you'll soon be looking in a newspaper column under the heading of L'Ma1e Help Wanted. ' APRIL 1925 A. D. Johnny Mulheizler and Bob Young are becoming close rivals with the famous Dodge Brothers in the matter of motors and machines. They gain their knowledge on this subject by their frequent tinkering with motors and other such paraphernalia. MAY 1925 A. D. ' Honey Anesin, in our estimation, is a fine example of a typical sailor. Besides being handsome, fas most sailors arej and having a girl in every port, Honey is a human ish, winning the highest award Qliver can offer, the letter HO . JUNE 1925 A. D. First big musical production- The Mikado -many Chinks contributed by the crew. The orchestra which did so nobly, was represented by Margaret Feigh. - ' JULY AND AUGUST 1925 A. D. Ship reaches port and the crew had shore leave for two warm months. Few sailors found odd jobs, while others did much as they pleased. QQ THE oM1cRoN I lx! SEPTEMBER 1925 A. D. Anna Meyers, Florence Johnson, and Anna Kapurka have it over the whole crew when it comes to quietness and attention. We often wondered why they always managed to get such good marks in all subjects. Looking back over the records, we find that some did not return from shore leave. OCTOBER 1925 A. D. FOOTBALL!!! what a healthy activity. The equad was represented by three of our great stars, Adie Stevens, Charm Miller, and Lance Duggar. Scored on Schenley-Beat Allegheny and South High. NOVEMBER 1925 A. D. Ah! the weaker sex brings the good ship OLIVERNIA into the limelight. The girls' basket ball team brings honor to Udwiga Plukis and Mary Robert' son, both of the crew. Adie Steven-s shines as captain of the Oliver natators. JANUARY 1926 A. D. The steamer takes out from its Christmas vacation. !'Stew Smith, an' other of our famous athletes is what we would call a gloom killer. He's said to be a sort of womanfhater, but I think he is too goodflooking to be that bad. fAsk Gallij FEBRUARY 1926 A. D. Basketball nearing the home stretch with the Oliver team striving in vain. Johnny and Wilbur Fullerton, only set of twin athletes in the school, are having their fun fooling the teacherskas to their real identity. Watch out, He who laughs last, laughs best. Margaret Eck is having her bad breaks with Miss David' son, but Margaret shows her superiority in outftalking Miss Davidson. . MARCH 1926 A. D. Down in Room 109, Russ McBride, Hunk Mekovsky, and Johnny Sebis could be rightfully called the Three Musketeers because of their close assof ciation, but somehow Russ was enchanted by that feminine charm and broke away. In the same roo1n A1 Chestnut with Buck Riefer and others were always get' ting the inside dope concerning baseball, football, both in school and out. No wonder Billy Evans, Ralph Davis, and Knute Rockne got busy in writing out sports, fthey saw the pink slips coming which meant new men for their positions., APRIL 1926 A. D. Jack Watt is the crew's best artist and cartoonist. Flora Schott steps out and becomes a modern flapper. Is she a mean mama ? Ask some of her victims. M cLAss OF FEBRUARY 1928 Lfifj MAY 1926 A. D. Butts Coneby, Babe Ruth's only dreaded rival, can be seen dressed in a Wagner Bear baseball suit as the sandlot baseball season opens. Somehow, I think his name is connected with that of Mr. Guttenburg fprobably some of the history students can identify Mr. Guttenburg to the readersj Mike Franzak's worf ries over his studies will cause his hair to turn gray before the time comes. You can see him studying every spare moment he has. By gum! he has the making of Abe Lincoln. JUNE 1926 A, D. Baseball again becomes the major sport of the time. Charm , Miller, gains a berth on the twirling staff, Johnny Fullerton also making the team. Almost a championship team. JULY - AUGUST 1926 A. D. Shore leave for two month. Mostly all doing something useful and helpful U1 SEPTEMBER 1926 A. D. V The crew is gradually growing smaller and smaller. A sailor drifting our way is picked up and becomes one of the crew. Welcome, Mr. Seigman, we are glad to have you. Beau Jones is an allfaround member. He has the honor of being the first athletic reporter for the Oliver, a member of the Combined Orchestra and a runner for Oliver's track team. OCTOBER 1926 A. D. Five husky brutes of the crew represent Olivernia in their participation in football. Duggar, Stevens, and Miller veterans, Russ McBride, a new brute, and Chizzy Seigman fstarring alreadyl. Wilbur Nicholl is now working in a North Side drugstore. We always wonder why L'Nic is the proud possessor of many luxurious articles. Explain yourself, Nic . Earl 'iRosy Erew is having his good times monkeyshining with Mr. Goetz, but finds out that Mr. Goetz is somewhat of an athlete pursuing Rosy through the auditorium. NOVEMBER 1926 A. D. Jane Stanger, alias Galli Curci, represents the steamer in many ways- Secretary of Sanitation--Hilarious harmonizer under the leadership of Miss Disay hAthlete-Smart and clever student, etc. We always wondered why Ollie Golian attracted many girls, but now we found out that he wears a different suit every day. He must be extravagant-Naw, his dad owns a tailor shop, and he just breaks in the customers' suits. DECEMBER 1926 A. D. just found out that Augusta McCord is a classic dancer. The Spanish Dance must be a humdinger when 'Gusta struts her stuff . ljkj THE OMICRONg JANUARY 1927 A. D. Without our sailors, where would the basketball team be? There are Chizzy , Charm , Lance, Johnny , and Wibby . They shattered Perry's hopes of the championship, giving them their initial defeat. lt's about time john Kotchin got into the limelight, a candidate for the football team, social chairman, and at last, class president. The crew forms a firmer organization with Miss Porter, Miss Kelly, and Mr. Rockwell as pilots. Our rings arrive-Owl 36.50. FEBRUARY 1927 A. D. Udwiga Plukis, Sis Smith, and Mary Robertson, are running a neck to neck race for the title of allfaround athlete. Lance Duggar is taken out to' play no more in athletics. He sure has done his share and more in athletics. MARCH 1927 A. D. Hungry Sterling discovers that his height comes in handy when playing volly ball for the Oliver team. APRIL 1927 A. D. I Mary McCann, one of the most prominent in the crew has showed her superiority in many ways. In the colony of Irwinia, she was the chief justice. On board the ship, she is a big asset, being on the social committee, vicefpresident of the class and in the future, editorfinfchief of the Omicron. She is another of Miss Disay's tempo teasers-possesses athletic ability-another of those born with a very excellent knowledge of English. MAY 1927 A. D. Track team shows its stuff with Stew Smith, Will Nicholl, and Will Jones participating. JUNE 1927 A. D. Baseball weather- Charm Miller becomes the important cogfwheel of the team by his superb pitching. Chizzy is also on the team. L'Chizz,y has paid for his passage on the L'Olivernia . Baseball, football, basketball and track, just like Lance. JULY -- AUGUST 1927 A. D. Two more months of shore leave, this time everyone doing his or her best to get back on the good old ship. Eorgot to mention an important fact. Helped by Udwiga Plukis, Sis Smith, and Mary Robertson, the girls' volley ball team paved their way to the sectional championship, and beating Westinghouse in the finals, came through the possessor of the silver cup. SEPTEMBER 1927 A. D. Sailing smoothly with land almost in sight. Adie Stevens wins the highest honor, that of president of the Student's Association. Johnny Billotta is the quietest boy of the crew. At times, he seems to be out of the room, but he's there. Sylvia Liptz is on the social committee for the present semester and is helping make it successful. She also has her time proving to be a little menace to Miss Kelly. CLASS or ruuuupixy 1928 HQ Xl ,, OCTOBER 1927 A. D. For the third time, football becomes the major sport. S. S. Oliver High School, North Side, Pittsburgh, Pa., do each in turn bequeath to the future, un' deserving seniors of the aforesaid high school some article or talent which has helped our class to sail the sea of seniority without a mishap. As a class we give to the 12B's: FIRST-Our Roberts Rules of Orderf' which were carried out to a T -Yea, even in the stormiest of weather. SECOND-Our note books which will be invaluable as a guide past the shoals of Halleck. THIRD-Our dignity, something which our rowdy successors should cultivate. FOURTH-Miss Kelly's paper weight, which bangs quite frequently and loudly. , Jane Stanger leaves My Battles with the Romans or How I Conquered Caesar and Virgil. Russ. McBride leaves his privilege to sleep in O. B. to any future John Barrymore. Robert Young, john Mulheizler, Waford Dailey, Michael Franzak, active memf bers of the Amen Corner of 205 bequeath their places to four members of the 12B class. Chizzy leaves L'How I do It , or 'LMy Power over Women. Also a big drag with Miss Gealey. ' The Fullerton twins leave their ability to fool the teachers, to any two who have nerve enough. Charm Miller leaves the privilege to eat pretzels in Miss Gealey's room and still pass History 8. John Bilotta leaves his master piece The Art of Doing Trigf' or How I Solved the Problem. Sis Smith leaves, Oh How I love that Nash or Bob and I. Mary McCann leaves her chic air and upftofdate efficiency to a lucky 1213. john Kotchin leaves Use Palmolive or Rosy Cheeks. Ivy Teather leaves her sweetness and true blondness to some poor peroxide successor. The 12A class as a whole leaves its athletic ability to the underclassmen, and to the teachers the memory of many brilliant recitations. And we do now sincerely hope that the 12B's will use to the best of their ability these books, talents, and other valuable gifts, which we have so generously bequeathed to them. And we do hereby authorize and appoint J. F. Bailey to be the Executor of this our last Will and Testament. In Witness Whereof, We, the February class of 1928, have hereunto sub' scribed our name and affixed seal, the 22nd day of january in the year of our Lord One Thousand Nine Hundred and TwentyfEight. Class of February, 1928 W CLASS OF FEBRUARY 1928 HQ The Class Prophc-:cg After the graduation of the most wonderful class in the history of Qliver High School, the members of the class of Feb. '28 said goodfbye to each other and went their several ways. Slowly but surely life became unbearable to these famous Oliverites-- and why not? How could they live happily without being together? Finally, the thing became serious and ergo the leaders of this famous class namely: John Kotchin, Adie Stevens, Joseph Seigman, and Udwiga Plukis met in New York and decided upon a plan whereby the members of the group could be united for a while. We relate the following from Udwiga's book of minutes which finally appeared in the form of a log because this famous com' mittee decided that the class should drag out the old tub Oliverina and take a cruise around the world. When the famous crew appeared at the dock in New York we had a hard time recognizing the little children of '28, As the ship got under way this un' seen visitor Qyours trulyj made a few observations and wrote them down. fHence, this torturej To begin with, the acting captain of the ship John Kotchin is now seven feet tall. His occupation as the most celebrated lawyer in the United States has not interfered with his keeping good hours, therefore he still has that schoolf girl complexion . And who is this distinguished looking man showing the girls how to 'do the New York Push QThe latest dance-the big hit of '39j? Oh! Mr. Stevens. Well, we might have known Adie would turn out to be a prosperous banker. He's retired now, and is spending his millions as he pleases. tHe still likes pretzelsj Right here with Adie we find the cause for a future ntoothless race . Stew Smith has become a famous dentist and is now head of the Smith Dental Clinic . Next we meet the distinguished pianist, Marjory Clair. Marjory is now Superintendent of Music in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. We find Marjory talking to a very lovely lady-who? Oh! Miss Augusta McCord. Well, Gus . And what is it she's using her valuable time for now? Oh, yes. You see Gus always had a liking for odd jewelry and old furniture. fShe once broke a leg on a chair to make it look antiquej 'LGus now owns a very exclusive antique shop which she named Ye Olde Tin Pan Oh yes! it's most exclusive. flncidentally among her prized possession is The Paper Weight.j We hear a lot of noise and turn about just in time to meet the famous Chizz,ie Seigman and Hunk Mekovsky. They're still arguing over which was the best G. T. Warren. Chizzie was appoiid to the post of ambassador to Afaghanistan, but he refused the position because he couldn't find the place on the map and anyway it was against his principles to speak Polish. Hunk is spending his time staking oil claims in Mexico. He hasnlt gotten into any trouble yet, but he still has hopes. We think maybe we're seeing double-oh, no. The Fullerton Twins. Twin and NVibby are now doubling for each other in the movies. Their latest production was entitled The Kidnapping of Kitty . Promenading the deck we find Flora and What . Mrs. What just about bought out the Qin THE OMICRON QQ Paris shops on her last trip there and looks the part. Mr. What is now the lgading cartoonist for the New York Times . 'Gentlemen Prefer .r.......... -dog' gone it, who is she? Oh, I remember- Ivy , Miss Teather has just about usurp' ed Pavlowa's place, and had a terrible time cancelling her engagements so that she might make the cruise. Honey Anesin has joined the Marines so he's right at home on board . Honey decided he wanted one in every port so he took up usailoringv. Margaret Feigh wanted to do accompanying so now she's accom' panying 'Hymn . Betty Stone has just made her debut as a Metropolitan Opera star and is receiving congratulations from her friends. This conversation over in the corner must be interesting. Well no won' der, it's the famous Siamese Twins -Stanger and McCann. Only now the duet has changed to a quartet for Jane has long since promised 'sto obey and Mary is still playing the game of jacks . We find john Sebis talking to Earl Frew about their latest deal. You see John got artistic after the Senior play and is now def signing ads for all the big concerns. Frew handles all this work because he is at the head of the biggest advertising company in the United States. Russell Mc' Bride has become famous as an orchestra director and song writer QHe's a second Paul Whitmanj. Sylvia Liptz is now writing for the Ladies' Home Journal . Her latest article was called NVhat High School Girls Like To Eat or My Locker Between Periods . And here, my dear people, my observations must end for the famous crew has discovered me prying into their futures and given me for my Bon Voyage a couple of black eyes-I leave you with the hopes that the Olivernia gets back to port without warping. QQ CLASS or FEBRUARY 1928 HQ CHEERLEADERS The cheerleaders for 1927 were Blanche Faulkner, Luther Cashdollar and William Vaught. These leaders had considerable initiative and at their instigaf tion a contest for new yells was held. The locamotive and the winning yell of the contest were their greatest successes. The job of the leaders is not always pleasant. In rain, snow or sunshine they must be there-just like the team you know! g, . 1 nw ' Q, 5 2 V N P-ff QQ CLASS OF FEBRUARY 1928 QQ l FLX N George McLane, Captain FOOTBALL 1 The football laurels of Section H are ours. , We nosed out Allegheny, our neighboring rivals, and took the crown away from them. We are quite confident that all opponents have been fully convinced, and will witness that George Boats', McLane, Oliver's famous football captain whose picture is above, realy and truly knows his oats . Joseph Chizzy Seigman, Whose endfruns generally proved a menace to opponents, is one of the most flashy quarterfbacks that has been seen in all high school football games of this city. i Of course, it is understood, so it seems to us that our backfielcl would have been incomplete with any others than Mahlon Mohr and Chalmers MacMillan. Russell McBride and John Miller Were excellent linesmen. HQ THE OMICRON 919 In fact we have lost only two games, and much to our credit, those games did not count towards the championship of Section II. Although we were beaten by Westinghouse in the game for the city title, we pressed them so hard, that we are beginning to feel that they scarcely enjoyed their victory. McLane and Walkaskas made the City Scholastic team. ' 1 Here are the scores ofthe season. If some opponent's linefup happens to be as efficient as ours, then there may be some competition. Otherwise Oliver may not find it necessary to sweat for their laurels.
