David Brown Oliver David Brown Oliver was bom in Dun- gannon, Ireland, to Margaret and Henry Ol1ver, on October 31, 1834 This baby destined to become a pro mment figure m publlc education tn our Pittsburgh At eight years of age because of Da vid s parents liberal political beliefs the family was forced to leave Ireland After many weeks on a small old salllng vessel they arrived tn America ln 1842 They first lived tn Phtladel phxa but moved to Pittsburgh when they heard of its Insh people and r1ch opportunities After taking up residence on Robmson Street on the North Side David was entered in the public schools of what was then Allegheny Cnty While living on Robmson Street he witnessed an event which in his later 11fe he described frequently namely the fire of 1845 which destroyed 1200 buildings At the age oftwenty six David marned Rebecca B Cunningham Dunng a long and happy marriage they reared a large family ofsxxteen children DAVID BROWN OLIVER In 1886 David and his brother James were admitted to the firm of Lewis Oliver and Philips manufacturers of nuts and bolts Wtthm two years David became general manager of the Oliver Iron and Steel Company He retired from actwe business life at the age of fifty seven hailed as a great tndustnal pioneer David B Oliver rn 1872 became a member of the Board of Education of Allegheny and Pittsburgh thls office began his years of unpaid service m behalfofP1ttsburgh Public Schools For sixty two years until his death he served on the school board He was President of the board for twenty mne years but retired from this office m 1922 After dtrectmg the draft mg of the Pennsylvania Sch ol Code tn 1911 he was affectionately called The Father of Pittsburgh Education and The Grand Old Man of Education On his ninety sixth btrthday Mr Oliver was asked his motto for long l1fe Moderation in everything was his reply His favo rite books were those written by the older En gltsh authors especially Dickens Only ten days short ofa century ofhfe at its fullest Davld B Oliver died tn has Bellevue home on October 21 1934 Information gathered by John A Schlenke and Clyde E Cnder Apr1l20 1956 4 , - . , , . . . . s v v 1 v 1 s v s ' 1 1 9 1 s - Y l - ' 1 s I - , . - ' ss ' A as ' - as ' ' sv - 1 ss ' 19 . . . . . . .
