Dedication We, the staff of the 1977 Olympian, would like to dedicate this volume to a very special man—Mr. Paul Zip McGaffic Zip has been a part of the Lisbon school system for many years, but, more importantly, he has become a part of D.A.H.S. folklore. Zip is always around to provide assist- ance and lend a helping hand. Therefore, in appreciation of his years of help and service, we dedicate the 1977 Olymp- ian to Mr. Paul Zip McGaffic. It reflects what we are like as people, and it helps to form what we will be in the future. The movies have also been an important part of the Amer- ican lifestyle, often exerting quite an influence on society. In describing the events of our school in 1977; we have chosen the movies to relate these events and give them meaning. As the camera swings around D.A.H.S., it records mem- ories in ever-popular black and white and sometimes in glorious technicolor, but the memories themselves rival any movie, even with gim- micks like Panavision and Senssurround. We hope that this yearbook will help set the scenes for the memory- movies of our high school days. 5 The screenplay for our movie is being written daily by the faculty and students of D.A.H.S. The scenery may not always be breathtaking, but the plot is usually fairly interesting. The camera en- counters many changes, es- pecially in this school year. New teachers join the staff. A student conduct code is composed. Coeducational gym classes appear on the screen. The daily routine of students and faculty is often inter- rupted by an unusual hap- pening. Sporting events add further excitement to our screenplay by providing moments of comedy, drama, joy, victory, and defeat. The soundtrack is enhanced by all these events which help to make the screenplay of our movie an ideal one. 7 The cast of ourmovie con- tains no famous celeb- rities, but nevertheless there are some truly note- worthy characters. The faculty provides instruc- tion and tips on acting out our roles in the adult world. They are the di- rectors of our movie. The students are the ac- tors of this movie. They supply the laughs and the tears, and they are re- sponsible for acting the scenes in the screenplay of D.A.H.S. The actors are the most important part of a movie. Like- wise, without the stu- dents, this high school would serve no purpose. These are a few preview scenes of our movie. The feature-length version appears on the following pages. Grab some pop- corn and sit down for an enjoyable motion picture.- Sorry—there are no Bugs Bunny cartoons before the show. 9 IrtiCrtdtTntie atToonttg STARS OF 1977 At D.A.H.S., the stars of 1977 are the seniors. This marks the last year for the stars of '77 and the end of a memorable era. Before the stars make their final exit from D.A.H.S., let's take a quick look back at what is perhaps their most unforgettable performance. Highlights from this great per- formance included a dramatic escape to Guilford Lake and a somewhat less dramatic return at a later date to make up the missed American His- tory exam. With such an exciting past performance, who knows what the future will bring? One thing is certain, though: if it's up to the stars of '77, the future will never have a dull moment. 13 Who Is Educated? Has your education given you sympathy with all good causes and made you espouse them? Has it made you public-spirited? Has it made you a brother to the weak? Have you learned how to make friends and to keep them? Do you know what it is to be a friend yourself? Can you look an honest man or a pure woman straight in the eye? Do you see anything to love in a little child? Will a lonely dog follow you down the street? Can you be high-minded and happy in the meaner drudgeries of life? Do you think washing dishes and hoeing corn just as compatible with high thinking as piano playing or golf? Are you good for anything to yourself? Can you be happy alone? Can you look out on the world and see anything but do liars and cents? Can you look into a mud puddle by the wayside and see anything in the puddle but mud? Can you look into the sky at night and see beyond the stars? Can your soul claim relationship with the Creator? The pro- cessional, Pomp and Circumstance, was played by Carter Beck. After the Seniors were seated, the program be- gan with the address of class president Mickey Scott. The presentation of awards followed, the first being given out by Mr. Blackburn. These were the gold honor cords for the Top Ten Honor Students. In addition to the awards, a select group performed the class song, and Teresa Montgomery read her class poem. With all this, Senior Day was a very happy experience, but maybe a little sad as well. But we can't regret all the happy times all the happy times. Look, our eyes are dry. Our high school days have ended, It's what we looked forward to. And we won't forget all the happy times all the happy times. Gone, all those carefree days, As we travel on It's those we'll remember. Kiss toda'. goodbye. And point us toward tomorrow. We'll do what we have to do. Won’t forget. Can't forget all the happy times all the happy times all the happy times All those carefree days. As we travel on It's those we’ll remember. Written by: Karin Page All The Happy Times Karin Page wrote the words of the 1977 Class Song. It is set to the tune of a popu- lar song from A CHORUS LINE, and was performed by a group of Seniors on Senior Day. Remembering The 1977 Class Poem was written by Teresa Mont- gomery, and was read by her on Senior Day. To remember back on passing times. When mothers told us nursery rhymes. When first grade arrived we were all filled with fear. An occassional eye might house there.............a tear. To think back on school years that quickly passed by, And now that it's over we might breathe a sigh. So remember the good times, remember the bad, Remember your friends and always be glad. Reach for the heavens, hope for the stars, Be all that you can be, not what you are. Cherish the memories, your friends, and their smiles. Although old friendships may stretch across miles. Remember this day, the month, and the year. The world that we enter now fills us with fear. Too many an eye now houses............... a tear. Teresa Montgomery 43 Graduation— The Last Hurrah The 107th Annual Baccalaureate and Commencement was held at War Memorial Stadium on Sunday, May 29, 1977 at3:00 p.m. resident Mickey Scott velcomed those in at- cendance and then Rev. It wouldn't exactly be a box- office hit woula it? Likewise, D.A.H.S. would be a pretty dull place without its students. Much as they would enjoy it at first, our teachers might easily slip into insanity without us students. Who would take their exams? Who would they send white slips to? What would they put in their grade-books—gro- cery lists? It's plain to see that the actors are an essential part of our movie. Their per- formance may not always be critically acclaimed, but they certainly keep our teachers OFFICERS PRES.--Tom Baronzzi, V-PRES.--Kirl Johnson, SEC. —Bryan Peppel, TREAS. — Doug Berdine. That's where the director comes in. He interprets the script and keeps total chaos from taking over. His work can make the difference between a bad movie and a good one. For a cast of our size, we have a number of dedicated directors. They are the faculty at D.A.H.S. Their guidance is necessary for our adjustment to life in the adult world. Although they would sometimes like it to be a little more quiet on the set, and the script might not always be played the way they would wish, our direc- tors have a way of pulling everything together and making the plot interesting. Tom Reese replaced Ted Hart, an original member of the court, who was unable to attend. The theme of the 1977 prom, held on April 30, was Tonight's the Night. The evening started with a smorgasbord dinner at the Christian De- velopment Center in Lisbon. After dinner, approximately 250 promgoers and chaperones boarded chartered buses for the Jew- ish Community Center in Canton where the Prom and After Prom were held. There was some delay as the band set up, but the wait was well worthwhile. The group. Great Lakes Band, was excellent and provided a suit- able musical background for the evening. After a substitution for one of the crownbearers, the coronation was held with Beth Everett being crowned Queen and Tad Rose crowned King. Activities at the After Prom included swimming, basketball, and of course dancing. Music for the After Prom was provided by Vision. Finally, at about 4 a.m., six busloads of tired but happy people returned to Lisbon for sleep or breakfast or whatever. 151 152 153 STUDENTS VOICE OPINION POLL FRIENDLIEST FRESHMAN WITTIEST SOPHOMORE MOST DEPENDABLE JUNIOR Kelly Hause Kim Powell Randy Coleman FAVORITE TEACHER PRETTIEST GIRL MOST HANDSOME BOY Mr. Roudebush Kelli Lewis Dave Peppel BEST GIRL DANCER Missy Pastore BEST BOY DANCER Hoopy Lewis BEST DRESSED GIRL Sylvia Dillard BEST DRESSED BOY PEPPIEST GIRL PEPPIEST BOY Mickey Scott Karen Klein John Lenkey MOST ADMIRED GIRL Teresa Reynolds MOST ADMIRED BOY John Lenkey MOST SOPHISTICATED GIRL Shawn Bauman MOST SOPHISTICATED GIRL MOST LIKELY TO BOY MOST LIKELY TO BOY SUCCEED SUCCEED Jim Ullom Mary Beth Peterson Duncan Cameron MOST ATHLETIC GIRL MOST ATHLETIC BOY MOST OUTSTANDING Lesa Gray Pat Kelly SENIOR Kim Vollnogle 55 Top Ten Honor Students Valedictorian MARY BETH PETERSON 4.00000 Salutatorian KELLI LEWIS 3.97222 156 JIM ULLOM 3.96202 JOHN VIETMEIER 3.89743 CHERYL FITCH 3.891025 KELLY RUSSELL 3.84722 TERRI BACON 3.81690 SHAWN BAUMAN 3.78082 157 RICK WILLIAMS 3.75324 CONNIE CARPENTER 3.72666 sawvM t 'x FINANCIAL BACCFRN The successful production of any movie depends on its fi- nancial backers.
