SU PERINTEN DENT'S MESSAGE More than any other kind of society, democracy requires talent and leadership among a great many people. The goal of our educational system must be the op- portunity and the incentive for the fullest development of each individual's abili- ties. The Davenport Schools, through the support, planning and interest of patrons of the community, have given our stu- dents a background of intellectual disci- pline that is essential to our national pur- pose as well as to our personal goals. For you to measure up to the de- mands of the hour, the character of each must be developed to instill ideals and the faith to know what is right, and to instill the courage and the resolution to choose and to work and to fight for it. lt is our sincere hope that the Class of 1961 has the perspective to utilize the training and background so acquired. 5 5 DEDICATION The Torch of Knowledge The Torch of Knowledge has burned brightly in the hails of Davenport High School ever since the school came into existence. You may ask yourself, What is this thing we speak of? The Torch of Knowledge is the symbol of all we strive to attain in preparation for college or entering the business world, offering opportunities to those with the initiative to take them. It is the will, the desire, that spurs us on to excel in our studies and to become respected and set up as an example by our fellow classmates. The class of 1960-61 has upheld the tradition vigor- ously, formulating excellent study habits and attaining commendable goals in their scholastic fields. The senior class has participated in many extracurricular activities, all the while maintaining fine grades in their regular studies, proving to be an example of the axiom The great student is the one who does more than is asked of him. As our teachers have told us many times, there is always room at the top and it is up to us whether we shall rise above mediocrity and become leaders in our chosen fields or fall into the lot of the everyday workman. Now with the school year at an end, the senior class hands down to you, the students coming up, the Torch of Knowledge. Hold it high, be proud to be a student of Davenport High School, and never let your search for knowledge end.
