A strong desire and winning spirit helped the basketball team obtain second place in the Washington State Class B tournament. To reach the tournament and play for the state champion- ship has been a long sought goal of Davenport High School, and this year's team fulfilled it by working hard and continually improving during the season. After winning its way to a North-side champ- ionship, the team then played for the Bi-County title and defeated Ritzville in a well-remembered victory. As Bi-County champions, the team went to the Northeast District tournament and again showed its strength by victories over Freeman and Odessa. ln the championship game the team experienced a few bad breaks and was defeated, but it did win the second place trophy and a berth in the state tournament. The Gorillas found stronger competition at the state tournament, however, a combined team effort brought victories over Connell, Rosalia, and Napavine and placed the team in the champ- ionship game. The final game with St. John was one of the closest and most exciting games of the tourna- ment and the victory could have gone either way. Although the team did lose in the final minute of play, it gave a performance of which the school and team could be proud. Ron Childs earned a position on the Bi- County All-Star team and was the All-State first team.
