You may ask yourself, What is this thing we speak of? The Torch of Knowledge is the symbol of all we strive to attain in preparation for college or entering the business world, offering opportunities to those with the initiative to take them. It is the will, the desire, that spurs us on to excel in our studies and to become respected and set up as an example by our fellow classmates. The class of 1960-61 has upheld the tradition vigor- ously, formulating excellent study habits and attaining commendable goals in their scholastic fields. The senior class has participated in many extracurricular activities, all the while maintaining fine grades in their regular studies, proving to be an example of the axiom The great student is the one who does more than is asked of him. As our teachers have told us many times, there is always room at the top and it is up to us whether we shall rise above mediocrity and become leaders in our chosen fields or fall into the lot of the everyday workman. Now with the school year at an end, the senior class hands down to you, the students coming up, the Torch of Knowledge. Hold it high, be proud to be a student of Davenport High School, and never let your search for knowledge end. SU PERINTEN DENT'S MESSAGE More than any other kind of society, democracy requires talent and leadership among a great many people. The goal of our educational system must be the op- portunity and the incentive for the fullest development of each individual's abili- ties. The Davenport Schools, through the support, planning and interest of patrons of the community, have given our stu- dents a background of intellectual disci- pline that is essential to our national pur- pose as well as to our personal goals. For you to measure up to the de- mands of the hour, the character of each must be developed to instill ideals and the faith to know what is right, and to instill the courage and the resolution to choose and to work and to fight for it. lt is our sincere hope that the Class of 1961 has the perspective to utilize the training and background so acquired. Lloyd Stanna rd PRlNClPAL'S MESSAGE Another class leaves Davenport High School and all'it has meant to them -better human relationships toward all, growth and development tor them as individuals. Future plans: College SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On a sunny September 2, 1957, twenty-nine eager freshmen made their way to the old grade school building for their first high school class. Excitement ran high, when, before we knew it, we were to become the first freshman class in the new high school building. How we enioyed decorating for the dances we sponsored, neither can we forget the fun of one of the highlights of our freshman year-initiation. Our class elected the following officers: President, Ron Childs, Vice-president, Jerry Williams, Secretary, Gayle Hardin, Treasurer, John Remington, and A.S.B. Representative, Bill Danekas. Mr. Ricketts served as our class advisor. During the year the class gained Jim Tirk, Sheila Drury, and Florence Pearson. But by the end of the year we lost them and also Bill Danekas. Ron Childs was again chosen as president and led us through our sophomore year. David Millard as Vice-President, Sharon Reinbold as Secretary, Jerry Williams as Treasurer, and Linda Reinbold and Terry Brown composing the Social Com- mittee served as class officers. Mrs. Kiner was our class advisor. One of the highlights of the year was the biology class trip. With Mr. Barbee as our advisor, we took a trip to the coast which included such sights as Gingko Park, the University of Washington, and the naval yards at Bremerton. During that year we gained, and later lost, Joyce Woods and gained Merrily Brown. Our iunior year was one of our busiest but perhaps most unforgettable. By selling refreshments at the football and basketball games, we earned enough money to give the Junior Prom. The theme was Three Coins in a Fountain and Dutch Groschoff provided music for the evening. We also were kept busy by presenting the junior play, a three act mystery, Madeleine. The Junior Class officers were: Ron Childs, President, Linda Reinbold, Secre- tary, Jerry Williams, Treasurer, John Remington, A.S.B. Representative, David Millard, Vice-President, and Sharon Reinbold, Social Chairman. Mr. Shelby was our class advisor. During the year George Clark, Donna Campbell, Sheila Ford, Sharon Vanshur, and Judy Floyd ioined our class. By the end of the year we lost Janice Raab, Fred Burge, Sharon Vashur, and Donna Campbell. ln our final year at D.H.S. we were ably led again by Ron Childs. The other officers were elected as follows, John Remington, Vice-President, Gayle Hardin, Secretary, Sharon Reinbold, Treasurer, and David Millard, A.S.B. Representative. Mr. Shelby was again our class advisor. The last dance we sponsored was the Senior Ball which we gave the theme, Autumn Leaves. Besides this dance, we were kept busy by making plans for the climax of our long climb-Commencement. We had our pictures taken at Dorian Studios and also made other preparations such as ordering announcements and caps and gowns. Thus the Senior Class of 1961 graduated after four wonderful years of high school, with the motto, We have climbed the hill, yonder lies the mountain. i2 YEAR SENIORS Kneeling: Dean Reinbold, Ron Childs, John Remington, and Jack Schmauder. Having the first undefeated season in 36 years, gaining the co-championship of the Bi-County, and earning a rating of third in the state, were iust some of the team's accomplishments. The Gorillas also con- tinued to build their record from previous seasons by increasing their wins to 17 out of 18 games and outscoring their opponents 402 to 99. Individual honors went to Jerry Wiliams, John Scott, Ron Childs, Don Strate, and David Millard, who all earned positions on the Bi-County All-Star team. A strong desire and winning spirit helped the basketball team obtain second place in the Washington State Class B tournament. To reach the tournament and play for the state champion- ship has been a long sought goal of Davenport High School, and this year's team fulfilled it by working hard and continually improving during the season. After winning its way to a North-side champ- ionship, the team then played for the Bi-County title and defeated Ritzville in a well-remembered victory. As Bi-County champions, the team went to the Northeast District tournament and again showed its strength by victories over Freeman and Odessa. ln the championship game the team experienced a few bad breaks and was defeated, but it did win the second place trophy and a berth in the state tournament. The Gorillas found stronger competition at the state tournament, however, a combined team effort brought victories over Connell, Rosalia, and Napavine and placed the team in the champ- ionship game. The final game with St. John was one of the closest and most exciting games of the tourna- ment and the victory could have gone either way. Although the team did lose in the final minute of play, it gave a performance of which the school and team could be proud. Ron Childs earned a position on the Bi- County All-Star team and was the All-State first team.
