.. .1bistorQ anti rowtb . .. Back in 1883, when the school necessities of Dav- enport were those of an ordinary country district, a one-room school house was built. Mr. O. H. Parks. who has passed to his eternal home, Mr. Kennedy, president of the present board of direc- tors. and Mr. D. XYoodin, who still resides near town, were the first directors. Mr. Prior tilled the teacher's position and Mrs. Bond acted as clerk. ' XVith the rapid settlement of the country, Daven- port became one of the principal towns, and this growth necessitated more school room. lt was then, in the year 1890, that the beautiful frame structure of four rooms, midway between the business part of the town and the Central XVashington depot, was erected. Anbaddition of two rooms was afterwards attached to this -building, and it accommodated the public school nicely until two years ago, when thc enrollment reached four hundred pupils. As soon as it became apparent that more school room was needed the taxpayers asked for a substantial and modern structure. The board of education immedi- ately complied with their requests and gave our city one of the most substantial and modern school l l l l 3 l l houses in the state. lt is a magnificent white brick building, containing nine rooms, and is situated in the block opposite the second school house. ln ad- dition to the study of the eight grades of common school there is the high school course, which em- braces four years' work and prepares students to enter college. At present our school is in a very Hourishing condition, students from all parts of the country are coming here to take advantage of the splendid school facilities of Davenport. The in-- crease in attendance in the last few years has been remarkable. Mr. L. A. Kennedy, H. N. Martin and J. .-X. Level, who constitute the board of education, and Mr. E. D. Reiter, who is clerk, are all men who takc much interest in education and school work. Prof. Perkins has been principal of the high school for four years, and hasuably Filled the Aposition. Miss Martha Jackson is the assistant principal, The tech- ers engaged in the public school work are: Misses Sadie T-lettman, Grace Donnell, Louise Lewis, Ber- netta Stookey, Eleanor Switzer and Prof. Padden.
