-----cfs s-::!:fQIa55 'lbigtgrglfs f as :mn- From out the class which four years ago last fall started to search the unknown depths of a High School course. but tive have reached the goal, but live have succeeded in weathering the storms and trials of a life of four years spent amidst the writ- ings of Caesar, Virgil and Cicero, the problems of liuclid and the dangers of the laboratory. XVe have been subjected to the hardships of early pioneers, in as much as we constitute the first class who have ever been through the Davenport High School. In us the High School had its beginning, we have been the target at which the professor directed his schemes and plans for perfecting a hasis upon which the High School should ever after stand, for estab- lishing this class of 1002 a model and an example for the succeeding classes. One of our original mnnber awaits us in the eternal home, some are attending other educational institutions and are fitting themselves for some par- ticular line of work. some have entered the great throng of teachers, some have found one kind of employment, some another, and a few of the girls I have become convinced that the -old adage, Two heads are better than one is true, and have acted accordingly. ln the fall of 1900 Miss Jackson assumed her duties as assistant and the members of the gradu- ating class of 1902 will ever feel indebted to her for her interest, and the example of a loyal and energetic spirit maintained 'by her throughout her work. The usual comical, less comical and least comical incidents of school life have been strewn through all our course. One of the most notable instances oc- curred in the spring of IQOI. An essay was due at a certain time, and thinking that it would inter- fere with regular duties, the entire class remained at home one day to write the essay. The next day they returned, all bringing written excuses. The professor marshaled them all into one of the 1'ecita- tion rooms, where he plead earnestly and severely with them. and attempted to show them the wrong they had unwittinglyf Pj committed. In order that they might ponder quietly over their wrong deed he

. x as a student in the High School, we truly prophecy for her a brilliant success in whatever she pursues. MISS NETTIE HALL. Miss Hall, who is of a rather quiet disposition, is an especial favorite in the class. In class-room work she is most accurate and conscientious. She is also a memher of the Crescent Literary Society, doing excellent work in that organization. Miss Hall is not without a vein of humor, often furnishing amusement for the class. She does not often express her opinions. hut when she does they usually carry conviction. Miss Hall has given out the official statement that she intends to he a professor of mathematics or languages. XYe helieve she also con- templates studying drawing and painting to some extent. having developed some talent along that line. She surely has the qualities to make a success of life, and the old adage Still waters run deep, might well he applied in her case. MISS KATE ROGERS. The class would not he complete without Miss Kate, for she is always ready to laugh at a joke. to offer sympathy in trouhle or to scream if startled hy a mouse or an explosion. Kate is also famous for giving advice, and I am sure we all appreciate it. She is a very diligent worker in school, and as a memher of the Star Literary Society has held the oticice of secretary for three consecutive terms. Miss Rogers has had some experience in 'hook-keeping, and we believe she intends following that occupa- tion for a while. But some give it as their opinion that Miss Rogers is more domestically inclined than otherwise. llowever that may he, Miss Kate will be a credit to whatever place she may occupy.

told them they need appear at no recitations until each one 'handed in an essay on The lntluence of a Bad lixamplef' and each dwelt on the influence of a teacher giving pupils too much extra work! The professor's stern face relaxed into broader and broader smiles as he read the glowingthoughts from the animated minds of the culprits. He finally came to the conclusion that there was something irresist- ably funny about the whole affair and he was often heard repeating the story to visitors. In January, 1902, we went to Spokane to attend l l the mid-winter graduating exercises there. NVe again played truant and were out of school a day longer than the professor expected, but we had a very pleasant time nevertheless. Space will not permit me to relate the history of our class in full, but those of us who this year bid farewell to the school house on the hill and are about to step out and mingle with the busy ones in life. will lo-ok back to our school days as a pleasant 1ne1n- ory and will always feel that the time, was spent profitably and well. Jfarewell to the 1bigb School Vile, the forefathers of this Davenport High School, having broken the snow and mashed the clods for the four past years, are about to bid you all a last farewell. VVe have tried to make the road easier for all of you who follow us. Hoping you appreciate our efforts we leave you a few tokens of love and esteem and also a little advice. To you, Juniors, we bequeath all our dignity and honor. You may also become- the sole possessors of the chemical laboratory, the hydrogen sulphide gen- af erator included. To you we leave that row of seats on the west side of the assembly room. XVe wish to add that the seat directly behind the chimney
