A large ,crowd assembled in the Auditorium Thursday evening, lliecember 19th, to'hear the de- bate given by members of the Crescent and Star Lite erary Societies of the Davenport High School. The question ch-osen was, Resolved, That the Indian of the United States Should be Immediately Given the Right of Citizenshipf' The gold medal, which had been offered to the onegreceiving the highest number of points, was won by Miss Bertha Johnson, an affirmative debater. and a member of the Star Society. XValter Hettman and Earl Philips of the Crescent Society and on the negative side of the question, came out second and third, respectively. , N The others who took part were Vance Shields. Louie Todd and Fritz liaske, the former a Crescent and the last two Stars. .Xttorney li. D. Reiter, clerk of the school board, presided, and fudge Neal, Rev. McAllister and Mr. li. L. Spencer acted as judges. The lirst debating team ot the Davenport High School, consisting of Bertha Johnson, W'alter Hett- man and Earl Phillips, will debate the following question with the ljullman Agricultural College U11 May 2, IQOZI Would it he sound public policy for Congress to legalize contracts permitting the rail- roads of the United States to pool their earnings, provided such contracts are under the control of the Interstate Commerce Comniissioin, which would have power to abrogate such contracts whenever in their opinion it should henecessary P The second debating team, consisting of Louie D. Todd, Fritz Raske and,Vance Shields, will de- bate the following question with the Spokane High School, .Xpril 18, loo: 1 t'Riesolved, That the Federal Government shold own and control the Railroads of the United States. -
