Back in 1883, when the school necessities of Dav- enport were those of an ordinary country district, a one-room school house was built. Mr. O. H. Parks. who has passed to his eternal home, Mr. Kennedy, president of the present board of direc- tors. and Mr. D. XYoodin, who still resides near town, were the first directors. Mr. Prior tilled the teacher's position and Mrs. Bond acted as clerk. ' XVith the rapid settlement of the country, Daven- port became one of the principal towns, and this growth necessitated more school room. lt was then, in the year 1890, that the beautiful frame structure of four rooms, midway between the business part of the town and the Central XVashington depot, was erected. Anbaddition of two rooms was afterwards attached to this -building, and it accommodated the public school nicely until two years ago, when thc enrollment reached four hundred pupils. As soon as it became apparent that more school room was needed the taxpayers asked for a substantial and modern structure. The board of education immedi- ately complied with their requests and gave our city one of the most substantial and modern school l l l l 3 l l houses in the state. lt is a magnificent white brick building, containing nine rooms, and is situated in the block opposite the second school house. ln ad- dition to the study of the eight grades of common school there is the high school course, which em- braces four years' work and prepares students to enter college. At present our school is in a very Hourishing condition, students from all parts of the country are coming here to take advantage of the splendid school facilities of Davenport. The in-- crease in attendance in the last few years has been remarkable. Mr. L. A. Kennedy, H. N. Martin and J. .-X. Level, who constitute the board of education, and Mr. E. D. Reiter, who is clerk, are all men who takc much interest in education and school work. Prof. Perkins has been principal of the high school for four years, and hasuably Filled the Aposition. Miss Martha Jackson is the assistant principal, The tech- ers engaged in the public school work are: Misses Sadie T-lettman, Grace Donnell, Louise Lewis, Ber- netta Stookey, Eleanor Switzer and Prof. Padden. FRED JACOB HETTMAN. Fred Jacob was with us in High School but three years, having attended the first year at Sparta High School, XVisconsin. Of a pleasant disposition, he is held in high esteem by both teachers and school- mates. He is a member of the Crescent Literary Society, having served that society one term as presi- dent. and is also president of his class. ln his studies he has proved himself to be very efficient, but his mind shows a marked tendency toward the sciences and especially is electricity his pet. He considers the laboratory his especial kingdom, and it is as natural for him, while there, to dictate to the others as it is for him to breathe. and for this reason his classmates gave him the cognomen Boss Mr. Hettman w.ill continue his studies along that line and no doubt before many years you will hear of him in connection with science. Miss MINNIE LEVEL. ' Miss Minnie has always attended school at Day enport and is most favorably spoken of by all. Miss Level ranks among the first in her class and especial- ly does she show ability in Latin, and has also won local distinction in elocutionary work, possessing three medals thus obtained. She is a member of the Crescent Literary Society, and one of the most prominent. As president of the organization she guided it successfully through one term. Although she is not very, very large of stature, yet what she lacks in stature she makes up for in fire and deter- mination. For the present she will teach, but the country school is not her goal. Her aims are set high. and be assured whatever she undertakes is certain to be accomplished. 'l'herefore, we predict for her a brilliant future. MISS BERTHA JOHN SON. Miss johnson has spent all of her school days in our city. where she is well known and greatly ad- mired by all. She is a member of the first debat- ing team of the High School, and won a beautiful gold medal at the debate given by the two societies in December. She is a very enthusia.stic member of the Star Literary Society, and has served onelterm as the president of that organization. Miss johnson. who intends to join the large class of teachers. has already taught very successfully 'three months. She is an exceptionally bright young lady, very ac- curate in all her Work and persistent in all her u11- dertakings. Judging her future 'by her past record . x as a student in the High School, we truly prophecy for her a brilliant success in whatever she pursues. MISS NETTIE HALL. Miss Hall, who is of a rather quiet disposition, is an especial favorite in the class. In class-room work she is most accurate and conscientious. She is also a memher of the Crescent Literary Society, doing excellent work in that organization. Miss Hall is not without a vein of humor, often furnishing amusement for the class. She does not often express her opinions. hut when she does they usually carry conviction. Miss Hall has given out the official statement that she intends to he a professor of mathematics or languages. XYe helieve she also con- templates studying drawing and painting to some extent. having developed some talent along that line. She surely has the qualities to make a success of life, and the old adage Still waters run deep, might well he applied in her case. MISS KATE ROGERS. The class would not he complete without Miss Kate, for she is always ready to laugh at a joke. to offer sympathy in trouhle or to scream if startled hy a mouse or an explosion. Kate is also famous for giving advice, and I am sure we all appreciate it. She is a very diligent worker in school, and as a memher of the Star Literary Society has held the oticice of secretary for three consecutive terms. Miss Rogers has had some experience in 'hook-keeping, and we believe she intends following that occupa- tion for a while. But some give it as their opinion that Miss Rogers is more domestically inclined than otherwise. llowever that may he, Miss Kate will be a credit to whatever place she may occupy. -----cfs s-::!:fQIa55 'lbigtgrglfs f as :mn- From out the class which four years ago last fall started to search the unknown depths of a High School course. but tive have reached the goal, but live have succeeded in weathering the storms and trials of a life of four years spent amidst the writ- ings of Caesar, Virgil and Cicero, the problems of liuclid and the dangers of the laboratory. XVe have been subjected to the hardships of early pioneers, in as much as we constitute the first class who have ever been through the Davenport High School. In us the High School had its beginning, we have been the target at which the professor directed his schemes and plans for perfecting a hasis upon which the High School should ever after stand, for estab- lishing this class of 1002 a model and an example for the succeeding classes. One of our original mnnber awaits us in the eternal home, some are attending other educational institutions and are fitting themselves for some par- ticular line of work. some have entered the great throng of teachers, some have found one kind of employment, some another, and a few of the girls I have become convinced that the -old adage, Two heads are better than one is true, and have acted accordingly. ln the fall of 1900 Miss Jackson assumed her duties as assistant and the members of the gradu- ating class of 1902 will ever feel indebted to her for her interest, and the example of a loyal and energetic spirit maintained 'by her throughout her work. The usual comical, less comical and least comical incidents of school life have been strewn through all our course. One of the most notable instances oc- curred in the spring of IQOI. An essay was due at a certain time, and thinking that it would inter- fere with regular duties, the entire class remained at home one day to write the essay. The next day they returned, all bringing written excuses. The professor marshaled them all into one of the 1'ecita- tion rooms, where he plead earnestly and severely with them. and attempted to show them the wrong they had unwittinglyf Pj committed. In order that they might ponder quietly over their wrong deed he told them they need appear at no recitations until each one 'handed in an essay on The lntluence of a Bad lixamplef' and each dwelt on the influence of a teacher giving pupils too much extra work! The professor's stern face relaxed into broader and broader smiles as he read the glowingthoughts from the animated minds of the culprits. He finally came to the conclusion that there was something irresist- ably funny about the whole affair and he was often heard repeating the story to visitors. In January, 1902, we went to Spokane to attend l l the mid-winter graduating exercises there. NVe again played truant and were out of school a day longer than the professor expected, but we had a very pleasant time nevertheless. Space will not permit me to relate the history of our class in full, but those of us who this year bid farewell to the school house on the hill and are about to step out and mingle with the busy ones in life. will lo-ok back to our school days as a pleasant 1ne1n- ory and will always feel that the time, was spent profitably and well. Jfarewell to the 1bigb School Vile, the forefathers of this Davenport High School, having broken the snow and mashed the clods for the four past years, are about to bid you all a last farewell. VVe have tried to make the road easier for all of you who follow us. Hoping you appreciate our efforts we leave you a few tokens of love and esteem and also a little advice. To you, Juniors, we bequeath all our dignity and honor. You may also become- the sole possessors of the chemical laboratory, the hydrogen sulphide gen- af erator included. This last named article is a very important and instructive piece of mechanism. Not only will it precipitate the metals -of group II. Ain your chemistry, but it will also develop your olfac- tory nerves to such an extent that 'they will become very proficient in distinguishing a marked difference between good and bad eggs when any of the latter are broken near by. To you we leave that row of seats on the west side of the assembly room. XVe wish to add that the seat directly behind the chimney i L o ...A - is one which can llllf fail to please the most fastid- ions. To you, Sophomores, we leave the old black cat which has been our companion during the past year. Take good care of this member of the lion family. Do not let her come to harm. To you, young ladies, of the Sophomore class, we 'bequeath the lumber room as a quiet resort in which to discuss all ques- tions pertaining to woman's suffrage. Do not stamp your feet, wave your arms or yell, because you will disturb those above you. To you, Freshmen, we leave the many good ex- emples which we have set. Prepare your lessons well and do not spend your time reading f'Do and Dare VVeekly,', or 'fFrank Mer1'iwell. By all means be careful not to disturb the Sophomores in any ' gnner. Ever keep in mind that you are yet but , 41-esimwn. Heed all the wise counsel we have given you in the past year, and above all, follow in the footsteps of your learned and honored forefathers. Again, teachers, schoolmates and dear old build- ing, with your pleasant associations, we bid you a last farewell. C1056 of l9Olf2iCEll6llUHl' May 25, Sunday-Baccalaureate Sermon, Rev, McAllister.
