The beginning of the season was a disap- pointment though. As the season progressed, the team also progressed by putting to work the skills and plays learned through practices. Running many drills, tolerating “winners sprints yet, having fun all made the season worthwhile for the team. Next year's goal is to prove how much potential the team really has by having a winning season! The season record didn't show just how good the team really was for several of the games lost could have gone the other way. 1st row: Barb Hannus, Shelly Koelln. Cindy Samuelson. Nancy Busse. But after you capture a first place in your event you know that all you hard work payed off. The boys have shown im- provement throughout the season. Each member has worked hard to cut unwanted seconds off timings and per- fecting difficult dives. They have done well in meets by getting many individual first place but have come up short due to their lack of depth in events. 93 Captains: Tim Berquist. Jeff Johnson. Under the leadership of Mrs. Jen- sen, their advisor, the cheerleaders worked hard to promote school spirit among the Chargers. The winter season continued this enthusiasm as 28 cheer- leaders solicited spirit for three winter sports. 1982-1983 was a year of concern about improving the cheerleading pro- gram and increasing school spirit here at D-C. 96 Girl's Basketball Andrea Braatz Sarah Pankuch Grace Hoversten Tammy Flickinger Patty Pringnitz Boys Basketball Girls Basketball DC THEY DC THEY 43 Melrose 61 32 Maple Lake 38 51 Sartell 41 38 Hutchinson 60 68 Litchfield 46 30 Litchfield 32 43 Watertown 40 26 Willmar 91 58 STMA 50 16 STMA 61 62 Delano 60 27 Rockford 43 61 Hutchinson 39 30 Watertown 56 58 HL-W 54 33 Delano 62 66 Annandale 53 27 Monticello 55 53 Monticello 45 27 HL-W 56 69 Rockford 60 23 Annandale 66 64 Watertown 67 26 Monticello 55 65 STMA 64 52 Rockford 55 58 Delano 56 48 Watertown 80 67 Monticello 50 27 STMA 61 70 Annandale 63 35 Annandale 65 81 HL-W 77 47 Delano 46 69 Rockford 48 40 HL-W 72 DC Gymnastics THEY 06.75 Watertown 105.90 106.75 Delano 93.40 91.70 Paynesville 97.35 100.70 HL-W 101.90 115.8 Litchfield 108.80 111.25 Monticello 105.80 115.60 Rockford 111.55 115.7 Willmar 124.55 114.60 STMA 110.00 112.80 Cathedral 93.75 115.55 Annandale 112.25 Wrestling DC THEY 40 Sartell 12 5th place Atwater Tourney 79 pts. 21 Watertown 37 36 Maple Lake 28 26 Delano 25 35 HL-W 23 5th place Paynesville Tny. 101.5 pts. 45 Monticello 47 46 Litchfield 42 14 Rockford 36 48 Cosmos 15 9 STMA 39 16 Kimball 34 6th place Conference 101.5 pts. 20 Annandale 36 Boys Swimming DC THEY 60 Chaska 65 54 Watertown 63 56 Olivia 77 54 Chaska 65 94 Litchfield 45 94 Princeton 112 55 Olivia 70 53 Monticello 70 45 Sauk Center 79 50 Willmar 75 82 Sartell 143 82 Litchfield 36 52 Hutchinson 65 94 Roccori 119 94 Litchfield 52 83 Watertown 115 83 Litchfield 53 97 Spring Sports '82 Varsity Baseball Front row: Tim Peterson. Through many long hours before, during, and after school, even venturing out in a snow- storm over vacation to finish a deadline, miss- ing classes (thank you teachers), overcoming frustrations, and just plain dedication has helped up to complete this book on time. As advisor, Mr. Rosenquist has played a ma- jor part in the creation and completion of this annual. We couldn't have done it without him. We hope that you appreciate our efforts and like the book! Creative Problem Solving has grown into a significant extra-curricular activity involving students from grades 7- 12 who meet after school twice a week. The creative problem solving process includes the use of creativity, intelligence, and above all. the ability to work with others. Teams of four people need to interact to approach a societal problem from many different avenues in order to find the solution which is practical, reasonable, and economical Under the direction of Judy Thalberg and Jerry Johnson, the prob- lem solving teams have gained success at the State tournament level. Last year a team consisting of Murudala Jakkula. Chuck Tritten, Doug Benson and Ammi Sundberg earned the «State Runner-up Title. Another team made up of Dale Peterson. Luis Gheller. Darcy Bisto- deau and Anthony Strausmann were sixth in the State competition. This year's problem solving teams continue to strive towards excel- lence in dealing with the problems facing society now and in the future. It was that first year this school opened. 1972. that DECA was initiated Over that ten-year period, over 145 students have been on-the-job “learning and earning in an area they chose for a potential vocation The communities of Dassel and Cokato have been very recapetive to this “hand-on approach of education, over 80 different business have employed DECA students over those ten years The DECA emblem is in the form of a diamond. The four points of the diamond represent leadership develop- ment. social intelligence, civic consciousness, and voca- tional understanding. Each year. DECA students are able to illustrate these characteristics and District and State Leadership Conferences where they compete against other students from the state. Each student participates in a career area where she he is employed. The major areas measuring a student's competency are Food Marketing. Food Service. Petroleum. General Merchandising. Appar- el and Accesories. Finance and Credit, and Advertising Services Each event contains three parts, a written exam and two role-playing situations which are judged by busin- essmen women employed in that area All events are totaled together with the winner being the student with the most points in that event The district winners advance to state and state to the national, this year being held in New Orleans. The students are fortunate to have this type of program available to them and are understandably thankful for local businesses that employ them. The yearly earnings that is gained by these students as a group averages between $25-35.000 depending on the size of the class. Vocational education is definitely an educational tool whereby “learning and earning can be fun . and prof- itable! 119 The TGIF Show The TGIF show is aired at the end of each week by Dave Peterson, Chuck Tritten, and Dale Peterson. Without them the athletes would be constant- ly delayed before going out on the fields and fhe courts and winning D-C a place in the athletic communities in Minnesota. Mr. Hoien, the advisor and chief educator of the Fan- tastic Five had a dream that students under his guid- ance could well take care of the athletes bruises, blis- ters, sprains, and broken bones. He selected five out- standing young men, trained them, drilled them, and redrilled them until they were infallible and then re- leased them on the athletes at D-C. They deserve rec- ognition and respect for all that they have done. D-C Students Travel To Foreign Country This year two D-C students have decided to travel abroad. Miriam Ryan will be spending three months this summer traveling in a foreign country which has not been decided upon yet. Also, Gail Verhey will be attending school in Sweden next year. We wish these girls good luck and a good time. 132 Faculty At Work ... You Needed Me 133 Fads And Fashions History Of The Class Of 83' In the fall of 1977,139 innocent seventh graders first walked through the doors of Dassel-Cokato High School as students. Now we are 130 Seniors. When our classes came together, we cobined looks, brains, and talent. We have grown together, made new friends from two different towns, and have become one. We were the guinea budget cuts, the class n tapes. TheTGIF show first on Fridays. We made h is for a new class called Communications. It was a big success! Now, with the longer exists, but we will always remember the fun we had in making our video ired for us when we were seventh graders. We still enjoy listening to the show idlines in the media when we participated in the student walk-out in seventh grade. The junior high years in sports were our peak. We were unbeatable! The student break was established when we were Sophomores, providing not only a break from classes and a time to catch up, but a time to relax. Our Senior year will be the last year for all Social Studies electives. From this point on, there will be only Structured History classes. Other changes made included the addition of the salad bar, locks on our lockers, report cards done on computers, murals on the walls, and the changing of the library name to the Media Center As we prepared to entertain the Seniors, adorned in our elegant clothing, corsages, plus our new greatly admired class rings, we added another accomplishment to our list-our Junior-Senior Banquet Sayonara. We, the youth, are keys. We can unlock the future; a treasure chest full of talent, energy, intelligence, creativity, and the promise for America's enduring strength. As we enter into our last year of high school and our historic present, not only have we had loads of fun with our various adventures, but also have gained much from our learning experiences. From the classroom, our friendly teachers have not only inspired us, but have given us the tools to work with to strive for useful citizenship in the adult world. We have come a long way since seventh grade. I am sure we all agree that it was well worth it. We have something very special in common, and we will always cherish and preserve the memories, for they are left to us. As this group reaches the culmination or our high school days, we look toward to the future with mixed emotions as we start the task of pursuing the knowledge that our teachers said was a must! Memories of our school will live forever, and our Alma Mater will never cease to extend the same generous welcome it always has to all entering students and to those who, after graduation return to thank her for all she has meant.
