Many memories this year were made to last, but the people within the class are what made up 79-'80 memories. Because of all their special qualities, the entire class grew closer. Friendships became stronger, and new friendships formed. School spirit flourished this year. Class pride was evident throughout the seniors. The beginning of a decade brought an awareness of the changes to come in each class members' life. Life brought its changes just as surely as the seasons change. Behind all these changes, though, the capacity for each senior to simply experience remained, and hopefully will remain, great. In recognition of the special, unique people of the Class of '80, from one personality to its opposite, is this yearbook put forth. 5 diversity Class Motto: What Lies Behind Us And What Lies Before Us Are Tiny Matters Compared To What Lies Within Us. -Ralph Waldo Emerson Class Colors: Navy Blue And Ivory Class Flower: Red Rose SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: (I to r) President-Dana Buttenhoff. Dear Young Friend Just enough EXPERIENCE seasoned with heartache so that you can separate dreams from illusions ... DENIAL touched with indifference so that you will al- ways try harder — struggle just a little more — to reach your goal, or to taste victory .. HARD WORK — lots of it — so that you might grow blisters on you hands but not on your attitudes DEFEAT, occasionally, in order that your backbone may be stiffened and your emotional muscles strengthened . . NEED so that you will never be afraid to reach out to others for help, nor will fail to comprehend that others may have need of you ... FRUSTRATION in order that you will have to begin again, to pick up the shattered pieces and know what it is to have to start over . . FEAR: fear to competition, fear of weakness, and fear of failure so that you will always avoid being the de- structive B's — boastful, blase', and bored .. FAITH so that you will wrap yourself in God as your security blanket, and will never fail to acknowledge the Stars and Stripes as your status symbol .. No, I have not offered you the easy path, nor have I tossed out pretty phrases to compliment or win you. But then, friendship is telling it like it is. And life is made of these things I have offered you. The test is whether you can take it or not! — Basilla E. The format of a democratic system has been carried down from our federal government into our state systems, and from there into a local level — present in city governments, clubs, schools, and even our homes Dassei-Cokato High School has continued this democratic lifestyle through the Student Council Members are elected by the majority vote of their classmates. Discussion and votes are held on issues coming up before the council. Just as our government representatives do. the council members try to voice the feelings of the students through their votes During the course of this year, the Student Council has done many things They organized homecoming week, got the administration to play music during lunch hour, planned a ski trip on semester break day. and organized a petition that was sent to the American Embassy in Iran and to President Carter supporting any stand the U.S. takes in the Iranian crisis. The Student Council is not just another organization involving a small percent of the student body, but an organization in which each student of D-C can play a part by voicing their interests, concerns, and opinions on issues concerning them. In fact, it is the duty of each of us to learn the ways of democracy so we can continue the American tradition of a free life for which our forefathers hoped, fought, and died It is our duty to keep democracy alive STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS: (I to r) Treasurer-Alan Gilmer. This group includes six school board members, special because they have been elected to their position by the people of Dassel and Cokato and also because their main objective for serving in this capacity is to keep high educational standards for the students of D-C. A number of issues come up each year in which each board member must make his stand for what he believes will best suit the people of District 466. Exciting activities are planned throughout the year, including sponsoring a holiday boutique, having a pizza party, selling “cookie-grams at Valentines Day, and running after-school bake sales. Seniors Mary Alice Holm and Jodi Kotila severed as president and secretary treasurer, respectively for FHA '79-'80 Mrs. Nygaard and Mrs Anderson were advisors. Members (I to r) Bottom. E Vogelpohl. Coach Hagen did a great job setting up their strategy. All the players put forth a good effort and worked hard. This year was a rebuilding year for the team and high hopes are in store for next season. There were a lot of little spikers who built up their experience during the 79-80 season. If their enthusiasm and determination continue, the future of girls' volleyball at D-C looks good. 86 Varsity Team (I to r)Bottom-D Nelson. B. Janckila. S San- gren. Standing-B. Grundahl. Busse 121 With most of last year's team graduated, this year's Debate team faced an extremely rigorous year. With a two-man team, they were forced to compete on the varsity level. They made a good showing though, keeping the D-C debate tradition of competing with the toughest teams in the state. Though the debate team was small this year, they worked hard to achieve their goals. Taking a break from their work are Colleen Whalen, Coach Kowalik, and Mark Holm. The D-C. Numbering nearly 50, the declam team continued the D-C winning tradition. They competed in many pre-season tournaments with consistent successes. The regular season began with the first annual D-C Alumni Speech Invitational, which was termed a great success. Many close friendships were made this year within the team. A lot of credit for this goes to Mrs. Kleven, the head coach. With her cheery letters and her talents and abilities, she kept everyone's spirits high. Mr. Cox worked all day at the hatting industry, then came home at night; Mr. Box worked all night at the printing press, then came home during the day. Bouncer cunningly rented her flat at full price to both men. It was hard though, because she had to re-arrange each one's possessions twice a day. Everything was going well un JI Mr. Box received a holiday from his job. He came home to find another man in his flat. Things go from there. It turns out that both have been engaged to the same woman, and the ultimate of coincidences — Box and Cox are brothers. Mr. Heinitz directed this one-act, which advanced to regional competion, placing third there Mr. Box, played by Jim Anderson, was understudied by Jim Johnson. Jim Brown understudied Mr. Cox, the character or Shawn Carpenter. Shelley Kuefner played the part of Mrs. Bouncer and she was understudied by Connie Isaacson. 125 SPRING ’ a conclusion The Madwoman Of Chaillot Top left-Jon Young portrays the character. ' Ragpicker.-' Above-Steve Knapp is keeping busy as stage manager Who would ever believe that one crazy woman could rid the city of Paris of all evil? In The Madwoman of Chaillot that very thing happened! Ruth Ann Crowe played the leading lady who schemes and finally lures the evil men of the city, who are causing sadness, down a winding stairway into an awful sever passage. The only person who could ever let them out again is the Madwoman! All the evil in Paris is doomed to die in that mysterious sewer passage. The Madwoman of Chaillot was also performed as a one-act play at D-C in 979. 128 Bill Marscholl has won eight superior ratings in four years at district and state contests with his drum solos Top to bottom: State Vocal Winners (I to r)Seated- B Noyed.
