At hand for all who love a broken-down castle, however, was a superb Venetian fort which, in its day, effectively threatened the sea approach to the town. We didn't know it at the time but arrival in Piraeus marked the beginning of four months of steam- ing independently ot other Sixth Fleet units. Piraeus was like a little bit of home since early in i956 the ship had spent more time here than in any other foreign port. Little reconnoitering was needed tor the old hands to locate their favorite haunts. The newer mem- bers of the crew, too, adopted themselves quite quickly to the' best the area had to offer. Both, it is hoped, avoided that potent and blinding local drink called oozo . For many at us it was exciting to return once more to Parthenon, the Dionysian Theater, the Temple of Zeus, etc. For the real de- votees - those who really dug the ruins - a visit to the Athenian agora fmarketplacei at the toot of the Acropolis was very rewarding. important excavations are being undertaken there to this day. X1 l One hundred or so miles south of the Dardanelles - the marines might say it was in the boon- docksu - lies the lovely island of Mitilini. Mitilini had her fort and beautiful Grecian weather. Our softballers, almost semi- protessional by this time, tried their hands at the local sport: soccer. Question: did the out- come of this disastrous match hurt our pride more than it did our Shins? A Navy visits to Mitilini had been very rare and we were besieged with requests to see the ship. General visiting and another child- ren's party were the order of a very pleasantly busy weekend, following which we have anchor for the Near East and South Asia. l , l
