Dashiell fDDi659l, a 376 foot destroyer with a standard displacement of 2050 tons, was constructed at Kearny, New Jersey andiwas first commissioned at Brooklyn, New York, on'20 March 19435 she set sail for the Pacific, arriving in the war zone in July. Dashiell operated out of Pearl Harbor, participated in carrier strikes on Marcus Island, Tarawa, and Wake Island, on 20 November of that year, the Dashiell stood into Tarawa lagoon spearheading, the subsequent occupation. Her guns accounted for numerous shore batteries, pill boxes, enemy strong points, and an ammunition dump. Damages sustained from an unchartered reef in Tarawa Lagoon necessitated the Dashiell's retirement to the Pugent Sound Navy Yard for repairs after the Tarawa operation. In February I944, the Dashiell proceeded to rendezvous with a battleship task force whichon 20 March bom- barded Kavieng, New Ireland. After three and one-half hours of firing, during which threatening enemy batteries were silenced and other damage done, the force retired to Efate. The Dashiell was than assigned to the Seventh Fleet. The ship participated in the Humboldt Bay landing of April I944, and then proceeded to the Solomons for training. This ship was part of the floating reserve for Saipan, and on the twenty-first of July she commenced providing fire support for the Guam landings. After Guam, the Dashiell regained the Seventh Fleet, and was assigned to two echelons which were reinforcing troops newly landed on Morotai Island, Dutch East Indies. On l3 October I944, the Dashiell operated as part of the Central Phillippines attack Force. Her mission was to cover landings on Panaon Island. ln November she made her first acquaintance with a suicide plane. This plane had leveled off and was heading for the Dashiell's bridge before the ship's guns sent it reeling-into the water. With an amphibious group bound for Mindoro, she sortied from Leyte Gulf on the twelfth of December. A Kamikaze streaked out from land and crashed into the flagship, whereupon Admiral and Commanding General were taken aboard the Dashiell with their respective staffs. On return of the Task Group, the ship received a Well Done , for despite numerous air attacks the ,operation was effected successfully. While in Leyte the gun creWS ,of the Dashiell fouled the attack of a suic'de I b of the Kamikaze. Only the skillful maneuvering by her Captain and the excellence of her gun crews saved the Dashiell from destruction by a suicide dive bomber. On the eleventh of January, in company with several other destroyers, the Dashiell interce t d t A - ' - ' p e G Wenty one ship convoy, the result of this engagement was the destruction of four enemy 1 p ane ut not until six of her crew were wounded from the strafing cargo ships. During the bloody operation in Okinawa, the Dashiell received numerous assignments to radar picket stations. The number of close calls from Kamikaze attacks mounted and the decks were strewn with debris from the close crashing attack planes, one suicidal passed between the stacks before lun ' ' t th O th f teenfh p gang in o e sea. n e OUI' of April the Dashiell fought 'her most desperate battle for survival, the Picket Group of which she was a part was under attack from all directions by a score of Jap planes. Dashiell DD-659i 94 4 T On the fifth of June the Task Group with which she was 'then operating passed through the eye of a typhoon. The sh'ip recorded rolls up to 52 degrees but suffered no serious casualties. ln Leyte Gulf, the Dashiell made her final wartime sortie on the first of July. On the night of thirtieth of July she made, with her squadron the most daring and the deepest penetration of the Japanese homeland waters by surface vessels. The destroyer entered Suruga Wan,,a Bay i-ust below Tokyo, and proceeded thirty miles inside of the Bay to bombard a rail center and an Aluminum plant. ln the harbor of Shimizo, the Dashiell detected a 2000 ton cargo ship, and two well directed torpedoes are believed to have sunk it. She continued operating in the Pacific War Zones until the cessation of hostilities. On the sixth of September, the Dashiell proudly dropped anchor in Tokyo Bay, Upon herreturn, she was placed in an inactive status at Charleston, S.C., on March 30, T946. The Dashiell commenced re-,activation at the Naval Shipyard in Charleston on 20 April l95l. On the third of May, she was formally placed back in commission. Dashiell has been operating with the U.S. Atlantic Fleet par- ticipating in three Caribbean, one Northern European fOperation Mainbracei, and on-Around-the-World Cruise. ln the latter she was entered into the Korean conflict. Extensive modernization of her equipment was completed prior to embarking on a Mediterranean cruise during' September i954-January l955. After return from European waters, the Dashiell departed in October for Pensacola where she served as plane guard for the aircraft carrier Saipan. The Dashiell returned to Newport in late November for holiday season. The Dashiell spent the first six weeks of T956 with a Hunter Killer task group conducting advanced anti- submarine warfare exercises in the Caribbean sea. After three months spent in the Boston Naval Shipyard for overhaul, it returned to the Caribbean to undergo the rugged shakedown and refresher training course at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. From September to the end of the year, the Dashiell was assigned to the Anti-Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, and participated in advanced ASW operations. The ship, on 17 January l957, departed for Mediterranean operations with the Sixth Fleet. The Dashiell participated in seven major operations and enioyed short visits in portsfrom Gibraltar to Beirut, Lebanon. The Dashiell returned to the United States 6 June l957, and was assigned to COMASDEFORLANT partici- pating in extensive hunter-,killer anti-,submarine operations prior to the l957 NATO exercises and re-deployment to the Mediterranean. On 3 September l957, the Dashiell set sail for the North Atlantic to participate in the NATO exercises. ln October she sailed to the Mediterranean for ASW operations with the Sixth Fleet. Ports visited during the three month cruise were Portsmouth, England, Lisbon, Portugal, Athens and Rhodes, Greece, and Gibraltar. The ship returned to Newport on 27 November. A ln the first half of 1958, the Dashiell participated in two ASW operations which took her to the Caribbean in January and Halifax in May. ln June the ship began a three month overhaul, followed by six weeks of refresher training at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. On 2lst November the Dashiell participated in the search and rescue opera- tion resulting from a mid-air collision in the Guantanamo area, and recovered two of the aviators. On November 25th, the ship returned to Newport for leave and upkeep. On 17 March i959 the Dashiell commenced the cruise this book relates .... T CDRiR.W. Sherwin, USN Commanding Officer CDR R.W. E stes What The Sixth Fleet MILITARY POSTURE OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY Admiral Arleigh Burke, USN Chief of Naval Operations The Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean and the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific are deployed to take such action as may be required in support of our national policies. These Fleets are composed of ships of the highest degree of readiness which the Navy can now provide. They possess tremendous offensive striking power. The principal elements of this striking power are the attack carrier forces and the amphibious groups with their Marine Units. They are further supported by submarine and anti-submarine forces. One of the greatest assets of these fleets is their staying power, the ability to maintain themselves while continuously deployed. This capability is sustained by means of the Mobile Logistic support Forces. A REPORT ON THE STATE OF THE NAVY Honorable Thomas S. Gates, Jr. Constant vigilance Means To Us tions and as a vast maneuver area for the defense in depth of ourselves and our allies. This will remove any enemy hope that our ability to strike back would be eliminated by a surprise attack Given a shield of mutual deterrence, power to prevent limited agression and to win limited war becomes decisive. Clearly this power demands combat forces in being: strong, mobile and ver satile. We have great pride in our deployed forces'--the Sixth and Seventh Fleets-Q-the U.S. Marine Forces, the contribution they make to the peace and their potential in war. BEFORE THE PREPAREDNESS INVESTIGATION SUBCOM- MITTEE SENATE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE Admiral Arleigh Burke, USN A Chief of Naval Operations The Navy must always maintain a readiness forageneral war. Our Sixth ancl Seventh Fleets, deployed and alert, are ready for action and in a position to move into action quickly and launch their strikes. As these fleets move into action, the remainder of fleets would be deployed. ASW tactics leXllJI 5, 1 v - ' , xl' ,a 'Z' - . uf '53, 4? E 5. ig Q. At any rate we had but one tear: that an inadvertent bite of fresh goat cheese would lay us low with Malta Fever . ,Trips into the countryside were beginning to gather momen- tum. Few who went to Arles, the lovely old Roman town on the River Rhone, or to Avignon, the site of the celebrated Palace of the Popes, would forget that trip. It is said, too, that those members of the wardroom who visited 'fL'ecrin nightclub will long retain the image of Made- moiselle Jeannine in their memories. V i N ' QX S Nx S MARSEILLE ----A 1:0 Y -. R Division Constantly occupied with the endless flow of requests for re- pair work of every nature, the R Division maintains three shops. Seven rates are included in this division, namely, the Shipfitters, Pipefitters, Electricians, Enginemen, Machinery Repairmen, and Damage Controlmen. Regardless of his rate or iob, each man in this division is considered an expert in damage control. For this reason you have found them during General Quarters scattered throughout the ship standing ready to take quick and effective action in any emergency that might come up. That their good deeds shall not remain unsung we only have to recall the flooding we witnessed from the Karachi Monsoons, and how quickly the water tight integrity was re- stored. H. L. York H. D. We didn't know it at the time but arrival in Piraeus marked the beginning of four months of steam- ing independently ot other Sixth Fleet units. Piraeus was like a little bit of home since early in i956 the ship had spent more time here than in any other foreign port. Little reconnoitering was needed tor the old hands to locate their favorite haunts. The newer mem- bers of the crew, too, adopted themselves quite quickly to the' best the area had to offer. Both, it is hoped, avoided that potent and blinding local drink called oozo . For many at us it was exciting to return once more to Parthenon, the Dionysian Theater, the Temple of Zeus, etc. For the real de- votees - those who really dug the ruins - a visit to the Athenian agora fmarketplacei at the toot of the Acropolis was very rewarding. important excavations are being undertaken there to this day. X1 l One hundred or so miles south of the Dardanelles - the marines might say it was in the boon- docksu - lies the lovely island of Mitilini. Mitilini had her fort and beautiful Grecian weather. Our softballers, almost semi- protessional by this time, tried their hands at the local sport: soccer. Question: did the out- come of this disastrous match hurt our pride more than it did our Shins? A Navy visits to Mitilini had been very rare and we were besieged with requests to see the ship. General visiting and another child- ren's party were the order of a very pleasantly busy weekend, following which we have anchor for the Near East and South Asia. l , l cartoon to approximately fifty l i 2 s i 2 l l l t l l l l f l l l ii gg -Y g ! l l fb T I l l I 2 l S. 2 51 use ., i. 1 . Whether in readiness to carry out the ship's mission in wartime or win the E in peacetime, the boys are al- ways on the iob. We all agreed with this state- ment: Our six-week patrol south and east of Suez was an experience. Surprisingly enough, the blazing, suffocating June and July heat in this area did not develop lex- cept for the engineersl, since there was invariably a strong, dust:-laden breeze which offered some relief. ln Massawa, how- ever, this observation did not apply. They say that five miles from this port lies the hottest place on earth - the Great Salt Marsh. We saw no reason to doubt their word, every mile that we put between ourselves and this oven was a mile toward relative comfort. By contrast, Um Said was an oasis, a Garden of Eden. The British very kindly put their swimming pool and snack bar at our disposal...The facilities of our first metropolis in a month were available when we moored in Karachi. ln addition to our American beefsteak dinners fthe more adventurous ate tiger steak in townl at , another friendly BritishClub we were overwhelmed by the quality of the ivory, brass, teak, and silver work which a- bounded in the many shops. We returned home to the Med. via Aden and, again, Mas- sawa.
