DEDICATION In memory of Robert C. Strong (1902-1946) In spite of our wide ranging times in Hanover, all of us were probably influenced and inspired by this su- perb man, a dedicated member of the Dartmouth family. When the first contingent of our class entered in July and September 1942, Bob was the man who ac- cepted us as Dean of Admissions and also served as our Dean of Freshmen. When the V-12 got underway. Bob became a vital academic advisory officer of the V-12 command and served on nearly every important wartime committee of the College. Throughout the 1942 1946 period, many of us ben- efited from his very human and very personal interest in our progress. Bob always saw the best in each indi- vidual and encouraged the man to make the most of his strengths. A quote from an In Memoriam , liddic Chamber- lain wrote for the Darlmouih at the time of Bob ' s death says it best of all- Bul, the part of Bob Strong which belonged to the Dartmouth family and to his friends can be remem- bered and shared by those who knew him and loved him. Both inside and outside the Dartmouth family those numbers are legion and so long as there lives any one who knew Bob and what he stood for and what he meant to Dartmouth, it is perhaps fitting that from time to time Bob should be remembered by the College publicly as well as in the hearts of those who miss him. For Bob was a great Dartmouth man. Bob, formally known as Robert C. Strong and af- fectionately known to many of his classmates as Chambie , graduated from Dartmouth in 1924. After a year with the Telephone Company, Bob returned to Dartmouth as Executive Assistant to President Hop- kins. In 1933 Bob was made Dean of Freshmen and Director of Admissions, serving in this dual capacity until he died. The measure of Bob Strong was in the wisdom of his unrecorded counsel in administration groups and with individual students, in his human understanding for those in trouble, in his sincere interest and admira- tion for the accomplishments of others, in his ready and affable availability night or day, and in the sound- ness of his judgment as to a man ' s true worth. These things are recorded only in the memory of those who knew him. worked with him or who turned to him for help. It is told that Bob, no matter how he said it or how he wrote it, could honor a man for academic achie e- ment or separate a man from college, accept a man for admission or advise a man he was not accepted for ad- mission and that man felt that his welfare and his in- terests were the primary and compelling concern o ' Bob ' s thoughts and actions. Perhaps this vsas because in fact they were. For the Class of 1946 to ha c known such a num is a rare pri ilege indeed. Ma the Boh Strong way be a lasting goal for all Dartmouth men.
