DARTMOUTH CLASS OF 1945 twenty-five years later
”

This was the beginning FOREWORD As the largest freshman class in Dartmouth's history begins its college career it is faced with two important challenges. The first is the acquisition of a truly liberal education and all the friendships, loyalties, and experiences that can accompany such a search for knowledge. The second goal to be sought after is the tempering of well-trained minds and bodies for service to our Nation in its efforts to achieve security. In attaining both of these objectives the ability of men to band together as a unit is of paramount importance. We believe that this volume can serve as a valuable aid in unifying the Class of 1945. It is in the hope that the spirit of friendly cooperation thus obtained may be carried on after graduation when individuals assume the responsibilities of American citizenship, that we dedicate the 1945 Green Book. More than two dozen members of the Dartmouth College Class of 1945 gave their lives in the nation's military service. In the late 1950's the class executive committee requested and received permission to memorialize those deceased classmates. A weather post on the Hanover Inn Corner was decided upon as the tribute giving a lasting reminder of what '45 had done to keep free and strong a voice crying in the wilderness. Nearly every 45’cr contributed to our weather post. It was dedicated in June 1959 on the occasion of our early fifteenth reunion by the Reverend Fred Berthold, '45. President John Sloan Dickey accepted it for the college. With replacement of the old inn structure, a redesigned and functionally-improved weather post was rededicatcd in October 1968. As song has it, the hill winds remember them.” Living members of Dartmouth '45 can never forget their departed classmates. We humbly recommend to those who follow that their deeds and memories be honored. Copyright 1970. Class of 1945, Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire 2
