io De AEGISQT 1907 MXXXW instance refused, preferring the practice of his profession and the manage- ment of his large private interests. In the Republican politics of Massa- chusetts and Boston, however, he has long taken an influential part. As regards his club membership he eschews most organizations from A to Te with the exception of Dartmouthones,-but belongs to the Union, Uni- tarian, University, and Yacht Clubs. To his native town of Ashburnham, endeared to him by the tenderest memories of his parents, he has been a large and constant benefactor, and in many ways has beautined it by his costly gifts, among them a park, a soldiers' monument, a public school building in the name of his mother, who was devoted to the interests of the common school, and a bronze tablet commemorating his great-grandfather john, who came to Ashburn- ham in 1766, went thence as a minute-man in April, 1 775, and died at the age of one hundred and four years, one month, and eleven days. He is president of the board of trustees of Cushing Academy at Ashbuinham. Mr. Adams' latest services to Dartmouth have been as Trustee since 190 3, and chairman of the central committee for the raising of the quarter- of-a-million dollars necessitated by the burning of Dartmouth Hall. The new Dartmouth, VVheeler, and Webster Halls will owe much to his gener- osity and ehiciencyg and it will be long before any Dartmouth man forgets the famous phrase with which he closed his call for the Boston mass-meeting of alumni-written within half-an-hour of the receipt of a telegram that the old hall was on fire: This is not an invitation, but a summons. Those who best know Mr. 'Adams are the ones who most realize that his whole life, with all its activities, has been dominated by a deep and true sentiment, which has shown itself in his recognition of the obligation owed to loved parents, in his promotion of civic pride among the citizens of his native town, in his faithful ofhcial services to city, state, and nation, and in his whole-hearted loyalty to his friends and to the college of his love.
