CASSIDY For many years, Darlington has felt the need for a means of giving recognition to the outstanding members of its senior class. Seeking to fill this need, the 1960 .llllI11f'fll,'0li'k introduces 'iwhois Who at Darlingtonfi the purpose of which is to recognize those seniors who have made significant contributions to their school and who have most clearly exemplified in their school careers those ideals for which Darlington has come to stand. The Editorial Staff of the V160 ,labberwokk sincerely hopes that Darlington will come to cherish this new feature among its permanent and honored traditions. Selections to Who's Who at Darlington are made by a faculty committee. To he eligible for selection, a boy must excel in at least one of the following aspects of school life-scholarship: spiritual leadershipg ath- letics: forensic and publication activitiesg campus and community citizenship-and he should he outstanding in at least three other aspects. Eligibility is further restricted to those students who rank scholastically among the top 5025 of the graduating class. WEBSTER L. COWDEN RONALD D. DEMPSEY WILSON F. FULLBRIGHT 28 ii JOHN W. MADDOX. Sherman Editor The preparation of a yearbook involves many hours of tedious work and unfaltering devotion-hours spent in determining lay-out. making assignments, scheduling and assembling pictures, writing and typing copy, checking and rechecking copy and proof, meeting dead- lines. and generally contending with the many decisions and problems that confront an editor and his staff. A large. eliicient staff skillfully guided by a conscientious editor capably dispatched these diverse activities to as- sure the successful completion of the 1960 fabberwokk. Special credit is due to Bill Monk and his trusty camera for a large number of exceptionally fine pictures and to Bill Covington and Jimmy Cassidy for their capable direction of the sports section. The editors and staff have strived to make the 1960 fnhberwnlrlr fresh and original without losing sight of the essential charm. traditions, and good taste that characterize previous Darlington yearbooks. It is the staf1's hope that students and faculty alike will cherish this wook as a fitting memento of the 1959-1960 school year at Darlington. The lettermen were a valuable asset during the entire year and added spirit and determination to the football machine. The letter- men formed a nucleus from which the coaches were able to build a powerful team. This group kept the team going in some of its weaker moments. DARLINGTON 0-CEDARTOWN 12 In the first game of the season the Tigers met the well-experienced Cedartown Bulldogs. In the first half Darlington moved the ball well, and it looked as though the Tigers were going to bring home the bacon. Quarter- back ,lones displayed excellent ball-handling in this period. When the Tigers rolled out onto the field for the second half, they seemed to have left their spirit in the lockers, and the Bulldogs scored 12 points in the third and fourth quarters to provide the winning margin. DARLINGTON 0-ROSSVILLE 20 Darlington began the first quarter with the fight and determination that are needed to win ball games. but the excellent playing of the Rossville eleven was difficult for the Tigers to 1-ope with. Most of the first half was an either-way ball game because. following the Bulldog's first score. the Tigers almost pushed the pigskin over for six. Fullback Wy'att demonstrated some blasting drives through the line on most of his runs, while lVlcClain played his usual good game. In the second half the Tigers could gain no advantage whatsoever. Although Rossville scored twice in this half, Darlington never lost its fighting spirit. Four TD'S for Thorpe! DARLINGTON 0-McCALLIE 7 Homecoming day hit hard at the Lakeside. The Tigers, although well able to move the ball. could seem to move it for no more than a few plays at a time. Both teams put up a Hereulean struggle all during the game, but the determination of one was always there to offset the determination of the other. For the most part of the conflict, the Tigers were kept well out of Tornado terri- tory, and Darlington,s passing attack was of little assistance in the situation. The Tigers were badgered by bad breaks and lVlcCallie,s superb defensive play during the entire game. After a blocked punt, the worst had break of the game, McCallie halfback Paty plowed over for the only score.
