THE JABBERWQKK EDITORIAL STAFF ,Q Q.. A Rud Polhill Editor The preparation of the Jabberwokk involves hours of tedious work. These hours are taken up by the assigning, gathering, editing, and assembling of written material and pictures. Ca- pable photographers and a numerous staff expedited the job of completing the 1959 yearbook. The co-operation of students and faculty alike is a great factor in its success. MRS. R. B. Through an intensive campaign for advertisements from fathers of Darling- ton students, the staff was successful in outselling previous years by a substantial margin. Both the Editorial and Business Staff of the Jabberwokk take this opportunity to express their appreciation for the suc- cess made possible by the advertising of Darlington fathers, alumni, and friends. ' - H o N 0 R co U N C I L zvivi. , 5, f ..,, Glenn Lesley Presirlent 'l'he Honor System has been an integral part of campus life at Darlington since its inauguration in 1915. The Code of the Honor System states that it is nthe ex- pression of the desire and intent of the student body and faculty to play fairly the game of living together. 'Glts intent is to promote Hmutual respect and confidence among stu- dents and faculty. lt is a gentlemanis agreement which implies faith and trust, each in the other. The Honor Council itself is a group of elected representa- tives from each class. To make the system effective, the pledged cooperation of every member of the faculty and student body is required. A proper attitude toward violation of the agreement is the keystone of the success of the Honor Council at Darlington School. MISS PATSY CAGLE Sponsor 72 The interest of the Y.lVl.C.A. is in creating and maintain- ing throughout the school the highest standards of Christian manhood. lt affords a means of expression and an oppor- tunity for service to those who desire to live a more active Christian life. The HYU has many activities such as conducting the de- votionals at morning assembly, holding special services at Thanksgiving and Christmas, running a concession stand at the basketball and football games, and holding regular Wedricsday' and Sunday evening services. The Y.lVl.C.A. is a student organization under the direc- tion of a Y Cabinet which is elected by the student body. The opportunity afforded by the new chapel has added greatly to the success of the organizationfthe religious phase of our school life. . DANCE COMMITTEE I is MISS WALLIS DARLING Sponsor i t L.Qk . wt .I N, Rud Polhill Chairman The function of the Dance Committee at Darlington is to plan and decorate for all of the social activities during the school year. The Committee is composed of juniors and seniors who devote a great deal of time to the prepara- tion of the school dances. The Dance Committee is a stu- dent organization which receives no financial aid of any kind from the school. Its main objectives are the planning and decorating of the Christmas and Spring Formals, and the dance and Final Ball during Senior Weekend. 74 This year is the tenth anniversary of the re-organization of the Darlington Glee Club. Under the leadership of lVlr. Worth Moser it has projected itself among the high rank- ing student organizations in hoth popularity and service to the school. Especially this year, with its part in vesper services held in the new chapel, has it made itself known. The vibrant tones of young voices blended with the resonant chords of the chapel organ have provided inspiration and set a proper mood for every religious service held during the past year. The Glee Club began its Spring Concert Tour with a program in Darlington Memorial Chapel. ' in .--. MRS. J. L. BARNES 75' Sponsor 2 ' ' ' Joe Barnes Presiden! McCallie THE SEASON The nineteen fifty-eight football season was a story of success and victoryg though the Tigers did not compile an impressive win-lose record, they demon- strated spirit and good sportsmanship. The high spirit of the student body lcd by the cheerleaders was large- ly responsible for the spirit that accompanied the Tigers on the held. In the first game of the season Cedartown took advantage of Darlingtonls inexperience and downed the Tigers 13-0. Considering the fact that Coach Doss, boys had had only two weeks of practice before the Cedartown contest, it was not a bad showing. In the next skirmish the Tigers emerged victorious with a 13-6 advantage over Georgia Military Academy. Early in the first quarter a Cadet sustained drive resulted in a touchdown for the visitors, leaving the Tigers behind in the ball game 6-0. A second quarter fumble recovery by guard Bro McClain set up a sweep around left end by Williams which ended after 76 yards and the score. Bro McClain, 'fthe bare-footed kickerf' put the pigskin through the uprights to make the score 7-6 in favor of Darlington. With six minutes remaining in the game a drive supported by the fine running of backs Downey, Tharpe, and Wfilliams ended in a touchdown from the ten by Jackson. Cook, Covington, and Dunlap led the line play in the l3-6 Tiger victory. In an afternoon game with Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tennessee. the Tiger travelling squad was handed its first Mid-South loss of the sca- son. The Cadets jumped to an early lead with a score and extra point in the closing minutes of the first period. Toby Adamson captured a Castle Heights pass and sprinted to the Heights thirty. A pass from quarterback Tharpe to Jackson, and a nine-yard gain by Williams put Tharpe in position for the score. McClain booted the extra point to tie the game at the half 7-7. During the second half the Tiger machine threatened to score again. However, a fumble at the Cadet 25 in the third quarter and a blocked punt on the Darlington ten clinched the victory for the Cadets. The Cadets of Columbia Military Academy stretched their record to live wins in five starts with a 2-1-0 defeat over Darlington in the Tiger stadium. ln the first half the Tigers surprised the Cadets with an excellent defense, and C.M.A. was able to score only once. Another Cadet back added six points with a score in the third period, and C.M.A. fullback, Zollie Sircy, who was one of the best runners the Tigers had to contend with during the season, brought the final score to a total with two more touchdowns in the final period. C.M.A. had scored at least 30 points on all four opponents previous to the game with Darlington. 'if J, Z. Q., 5 t 1 s B T.lVl.l. scored its hfth straight victory of the season when the Cadets scored against Darlington in the last ten seconds of the game. There was no score in the first two periods. A Darlington field goal attempt in the last seconds of the half failed. In the third period Tiger Bobby Jackson was tackled in the end zone to give the Cadets a 2-0 lead. Darlington drove to the T.lVl.l. thirty, from where Bobby Tharpe passed thirty yards to Jackson for the TD. McClain kicked the conversion which made the score 7-2. Two Cadets passes in the last ten seconds of the game gave T.lVI.l. a touchdown and the extra point for a 9-7 win over the Tigers. In their best offensive attack of the season, the Tigers romped over Riverside Military Academy with a smothering 28-0 victory. A deep Sanders boot helped the Tigers to pin the Cadets at the twenty, and after three plays from scrimmage a Riverside fumble was covered by Darlington. From there Glenn Lesley streaked over left tackle on a 33-yard sprint to pay- dirt. McClain added the first of four conversion points. Another Cadet fumble on the Riverside 26 unleashed Williams on 12-yard jaunt which required only the one yard added by Tharpe on the next play for the score. The Tiger second string breezed fifty-three yards in six plays only to be halted by a pass inter- ception. The Tigers scored again in the third period when Baldy Williams ran 89 yards on an end run with perfect blocking. After stopping the deepest Riverside penetration on the 32, the Tigers set sail for the final TD with Williams running 64- yards before stepping out of bounds on the Riverside 15. Jackson got four, and Tharpe, nineg and Jackson bounded into the end zone for the score. Dan Cook and Dean Covington showed up best on defense. Williams was strong around the ends and Jackson gained up the middle. In the final home appearance of the Darlington Tigers, the Cadets of Baylor handed them a 21-0 defeat. The longest drive by the Tigers came in the fourth quarter when they opened a sustained drive of 53 yards to the Baylor 20 where they lost the ball on downs. Outstanding ball-carriers were Lesley, Tharpe, and Jackson. Defensive standouts were Jack- son, Lesley, and Dan Sanders. On a rain-soaked field in Chattanooga, lVlcCallie handed Darlington a 13-2 lVlid-South loss. Both Tornado scores came in the second quarter. Darling- ton picked up a safety and two points before the half, when Sanders tackled a lVlcCallie back handling a Tiger punt in the end zone.
