BENNETT Harlan, Kentucky JOHN NEYLE BENNETT GEORGE DONALD BEVERLY Pahokee, Florida HENRY LEE BRADDOCK Belle Glade, Florida This year many momentous events came to pass at Darlington. Starting off the year Darlington has come to its golden anniversary. The school has developed from a small one building day school into a day and dormitory school worth over a million dollars. Two of the more recent additions to the school have been the completion of South Hall and o new Gym. Dar- lington has grown from a small, local, preparatory school to a day and board- ing school of 380 students. lt is recl V ognized in this country and abroad as one of the leading preparatory schools tor boys. V Walterboro, South Carolina Victory hungry Tigers, paced by Sim Fulcher, romped all over a dazed G.M.A. eleven. Tired of defeats the Lakesiders started making up for lost time. Fulcher scored two touchdowns, intercepted two passes, and sparkled defensively. He scored from the I6 and I8 yard Iines and returned pass interceptions 40 and 20 yards. Both T.D.'s came on end-around plays. Yar- brough converted three of tive extra- points. IIIIIR CLA I WALTER BROWN Best Manners MEMBER? . . Just go down to the school store, and you will find no- body there except those boys who were in penalty study hall Monday. Mrs. Yankee and Mrs. Merson with a few helpers sell sweets and drinks that always give our complexions that' extra little boost that helps the shafts along. But if it was not for the store we could not get those razor blades nobody ever uses. An alert Tiger team, scoring from recovered tumbles, defeated T.M.l. 32-O in a conference game played on the Lakeside field. This was one of the few games that the team could get working smoothly from the start. The Darlington movers were Ver- non, Scott, Griften, Shear, and Little, with Pesterfield and Yarbrough mak- ing the placements. Many of the play- ers in the last few minutes were mem- bers of the Junior Varsity who had been elevated to the Big Tigers. EIIIII CL GEORGE SCOTT Friendliest, Most Popular NEW FRIENDS. . Florence, Alabama Each year, the students of Darling- ton elect their officers and represen- tatives by vote of the student body. A morning in assembly is designated and ballots are given out to each stu- dent present. Students vote only on the officers of their particular classes. A president, vice-president and honor council representatives are chosen in- dividually by the Senior, Junior, Sopho- more, Freshman classes and collective- ly by the Lower Forms. The ballots are collected, the votes counted and the results are then announced. Be- cause of the large number, it is im- possible to list the names of this year's officers, but the ,Annual Staff wishes to offer its congratulations to those who are doing such a good job at their various duties. The Darlington Glee Club, although somewhat smaller in number than in previous years, shows excellent prom- ise. This group has presented varied and enjoyable programs. After some hard work and training by Mr. Moser, the group is preparing to begin its concert tour in the Spring. They give performances in the churches of Rome, Atlanta, Chat- tanooga, and Columbus. There are many thanks due to these boys who have given their tree period to the di- rector, Mr. Worth S. Moser, and the accompanist, Mrs. Charlotte McMan- OI'YIOI'1. More boys participated in varsity athletics and have been good enough to earn letters than any other group that has been here. All boys who are planning to join the D Club, should watch the initiation, and see our athletes do the Can-Can and have those much- envied egg battles before deciding to enter the festivities ot the next year. There is one consolation, if you are not a senior, you can have your fun the next go-around. You slow the car down as you near the turn-off at the gate. You look at your watch and see that it is a few minutes after eleven. Late - as usual. You are suddenly blinded by a beam of light. Reverse brings you back around to where you first slowed down. You say goodnight' '... and head back to the smiling face of the teacher-on-duty. He holds up three or five fingers, depending upon what his mood happeens to be. You trudge to bed. Mr. Moser is leading the assemblies this year, and has given us many interesting programs. There is only one change that will never take place here, and that is those famous words: Let's every man sit up, please. This year Dr. C. R. Wilcox retired as active president of Darlington. He has served as president for 33 years and is still very active in the school, teaching his Math classes. The other was a 20-20 affair. Heights is the defending cham- pion of the Mid-South Conference. Bob Griffin kept the Cadets backed up well in the first half with four punts averaging over 50 yards. But one late in the second quarter was blocked, and set up a Cadet score. The half ended 7-all. With the score tied l4-all, the Tig- ers tried desperately to pull the game out ofthe fire in the final period. But the clock ran out and the game ended I4-l4. Darlington was host at a reception honoring parents of boarding students who attended the homecoming festivi- ties at Thanksgiving. The reception was held in the gymnasium the even- ing of November 24. The building was attractively decorated, and delicious refreshments were served. Dr. Wright spoke briefly to the gathering, welcoming them to the school. The student's PEP band and chorus provided entertainment during the evening. The chorus under Mr. Moser's direction, presented Now We All Thank Our God, By the Waters at Babylon, Men of Harleck, and closed with our Alma Mater. Darlington was the only out-of-town team to compete in this year's tournament. Since we had won it the two years we have been, they asked us back to defend our title. Mm: , , .-X 4 The Tiger Baseballers roared to a Mid- South Championship last year, in winning eight and losing one conference contest. Their only defeat was the first game of the season, when they fell before Baylor's Graham, 3-l. With righthander Tommy Williams, the most effective hurler in the league, doing a masterful job and four Tigers posting batting averages over .300, the club swept through the next eight opponents in order, Williams posted a five-one record while striking out sixty-six Mid-South batters and establishing an E.R.A, of l.58. His best ef- fort was against T.M.l.-sixteen Cadets heard strike three that day. He pitched shut-outs against T.M.l., McCallie, and Baylor and was selected on the all Mid-South Team. Rightfielder Bobby Johnson hit .37l and was the clutch man of the club: his bat and glove signed the fate of Baylor, McCallie, and T.M.l. in close contests. Bobby also was an All-Star selection. Shortstop Capt. Cliff Shepherd led the league in hitting with .448. Shepherd was a dependable player and gave the club down the middle strength. He struck out only once during the season. Hound Dog Williams, first base, and catcher Tom West completed the over .300 club, hitting .358 and .350 respectively.
