Dear Fellow Classmates: As President of the Senior Class of '4-5 it is my privilege to express the sentiments of our class in this letter for the JABBERWOKK. For the past three years, Darlington has been my school-home, in these years the benefits that I have received in my classwork and the pleasures I have experienced in my associations cannot be meas- ured. The consciousness of these benefits fills the minds of all the Seniors, and in leaving Darlington we shall carry with us, wherever we go, this sense of gratitude and devotion to our Alma Mater. We believe that those who come after us will carry on the ideals that are a big part of life here at Darlington-those ideals of honor, industry, and friendship. We believe, also, that as they come to the hour of departure, they, too, will feel grateful for the experience of living in a school based on unselfish dedication and reluctant to leave the campus filled with so many happy memories. Sincerely, ELDER GLENN, President of Senior Class, Second Semester. October 8, when the Tigers entertained the Georgia School for the Deaf at the home field. The Tigers proved much too strong for the boys from Cave Spring. but because of the exceptional play of Captain Odom the Tiger's defense was well tested. As preliminary practice sessions had indicated, the defense was well up to par with that of previous Purple teams. Despite the efforts of the brilliant Odom, the Cave Spring boys could not score. The line positions were well-handled and appar- ently well-fortified with talent. Moore, Cheatham, and Flournoy were the big ground gainers, with Black and Yankee handling the heavy' work with marked ability. As- sisted by sharp down-field blocking, Moore scored three touchdowns on long runs. For the opening game the team play of the Tigers was exceptionally good. ootoaff -ti' - DARLINGTON 32 -Cl'IAT'l'ANO0GA CITY 6 The Chattanooga City team rolled into Rome Friday. Ov- tober 13, confidently expecting to repeat last year's triumph over the Darlington Tigers. lt took only the first quarter to convince the boys from Tennessee that the 1944 edition of the Tigers was much more powerful than last year's squad. The Purple starting line-up hacked out two touch- downs in the first quarter with Capt. Cheatham skirting end for 34- yards for the first marker and Dick Yankee dashing over the center for the other. Alexander connected once to make the score 130. The second string Purples took up the burden in the second quarter. A well-balanced running attack with Dan Moore doing some nice end-running put the ball on City's 34 yard line. Capt. Cheatham out-foxed the Chattanoogans at this point by throwing a long pass to Buddy Hicks who stepped over the line untouched. The try for the point was wide and the half ended 19-0 in favor of the Lakesiders. Although prospects looked had for the home team, it was soon evident that the ball game wasn't over. Moore, Cheatham and Flournoy swept down the field to the Baylor 34. Cheatham then shot a long pass to Reily in the end- zone, thus accounting for the Tiger's only score. However, Father Time stepped in to deny the Purples another score as the timer's gun fired with the ball on the Red Raiders' one-foot line. DARLINGTON 26iNOTRE DAME 6 The hard-fighting Irish eleven from Notre Dame Prep at Chattanooga invaded the local arena determined to spring an upset on the Lakesiders, who were still bemoaning the loss to Baylor. Notre Dame started powerfully, but the Purple forewall soon called a halt. The first half frequently found both teams in scoring position, which advantage the Tigers seized twice to cross the line with a 13-0 lead. ln the third quarter after the Purple Varsity had taken to the air for an additional 13 points. The Purple second- string took over for a remaining uneventful period. ln the fourth quarter the Tiger third-stringers came in to check the battling Greenies who, determined to salvage some glory by scoring, finally plunged over from the two-yard line for six points. DARLINGTON 12-T. M. 1. 25 The Darlington Lakesiders suffered their second defeat of the season when the strong Tennessee Military Institute invaded Rome. The Cadets started briskly, with McCrary, snagging a pass from Galbos for the first score. Darlington took the next kick off and fought its way along the ground to the Tennesseeans, 37. On a well-ex- ecuted reverse Flournoy sped to the five but when tackled lateralled to Yankee, who ran it over unmolested. The con- version was short. Later again the Purples were to show their power when, after an intercepted pass and good territory gained by flat passes, Yankee went over from the two to take the lead I2-7. However. the last half was to see the Cadets unleash their lrig guns and slash the Purple line apart for 18 additional points. The boys from Tennessee had played their best game of the season to upset the favored Tigers. l1AliLlNG'l'UN 6--RIVERSIIJIC 38 November 17 found the Tigers at Gainesville to meet the niighty Riverside eleven. The first half was fairly even, with Bell and Iiolenner putting on an exhibition of pass-catching and broken-field running for Riverside. The half ended 13-6 in favor of Riverside but Darlington was giving the big boys all they could handle. The dam broke in the third quarter when Cheatham found the going lou tough on the ground and used the skyways in an attempt to score. lnter- eeptions by liell and liolcnger were eonverted into quiek touchdowns for Riverside to make the seore 26-6. The Gainesville club, inspired by their good fortune, played the hard-pressed Tigers off their feet and scored another toueh- down on a long fourth down pass from Iiell to Scanlan. Clicking on long passes. the Cadets were able to push over another touchdown just hefore the final whistle. A fumble close to the Riverside goal robbed the Tigers of an extra score. lMliLlNC'l'0N 7- DAVIDSON 13 The Davidson College freshman team arrived in Home to tangle with the 'Tigers on November 25. Although several bruising games had cast the odds against the Darlington squad, the Purple line managed to keep the college in- vaders from crossing the goal line in the first hall. Shortly after the second half opened, Lashley bulled his way over tackle for the first seore of the game to give the visitors a lead of 6-0. Beginning to 4-liek, Nloore, Wade and Flournoy advanced the ball to the Davidson fifteen. Moulton outran Lashley and made a brilliant catch of Moores third-down pass to tie the seore. Black converted from placement and the Tigers led 7-6. Most of the play in the fourth quarter was at midfield with the Tigers having a slight edge. With only two min- utes to go, Nlcllee heavcd a desperation pass to Lashley. the big fullback, who traveled from the 40 for a touehdown. When the conversion split the uprights, the score read Davidson 13, Darlington 7. Time ran out before the Lake- siders could muster a sustained offensive drive. DAHLINCTON 0 NleCAl.l.lE 7 In the last game of the season the Tigers squared-off against the visiting Blue Tornado of McCallie on the bitterly cold night of December 12. The weather was the only thing that was cold for both teams opened up the big guns in very rugged playing. The defensive play of both lilies was so hard that neither team penetrated liar beyond the opponcnts' 30-yard line. The big break for McCallie came in the latter part of the first quarter when lilaydes broke through thc Purple line, blocked Yankee-'s attempt to punt, scooped up the loose ball, and dashed thirty-four yards for a touchdown. Mouse-trapping the Purple line, the Tornado sent Brown ,bucking over for the point instead of attempting to kick. The Tigers fought valiantly to tie the score. but .1 fumble on the fourth down, with a yard to go, halted the Purple march and lirown punted out of danger. Although the Tigers had a decided edge in the second half, fate denied a seore for all eflorts failed to produce the needed toueh- down. if ootoall The Junior Varsity football season opened with almost fifty boys coming out for the first practice. It was first decided to have two teams, the Purples and Whites. with the Purples using the single wing formation and the Whites using the T formationg however the two teams were later combined. At first, the team ran through hard calisthenics for a week before starting scrimmage. Then Coach Reddick de- cided that the team would use the TU formation, and plays were learned for the opening game with Tuhize. This first game was played at Tubize and, from the he- ginning, the Tigers outplayed the opposing eleven. They scored in every period and ran wild with end-around and off-tackle plays. The final score was 36-0 in favor of Dar- lington. The next game was played with McHenry on the Junior Varsity home field. The Tigers received the opening kick- off and, by a series of quick plays, drove for the first touch- down. From then on, the ball exchanged hands several times with the McHenry team scoring once. After the half, the Tigers came back and almost scored again but, during the last quarter, McHenry ran for another touchdown, win- ning the game 12-6. McCallie, the next team the Junior Varsity played, came down from Chattanooga, undefeated and unscored on. The Tigers kicked off and the McCallie team drove for two touchdowns before the game was very old. Then the Lake- siders Mstarted clicking and drove hard for two quick touchdowns. The half ended in a tie. Both teams came back after the half fighting hard and exchanged the ball all during the third quarter and most of the fourth. With almost a minute left, McCallie completed a long pass for a touchdown and won the game 18-12. The last game was with Cave Spring on the Darlington field. Coach Reddick started the second team in order to give the first a rest after their encounter with McCallie the day before. After the Tigers kicked off, they battled for every inch and held Cave Spring to a scoreless half. Then, the first team went in and fought hard with every- thing they had left, but Cave Spring scored once and won the game 6-O. This ended a very enjoyable, if not com- pletely triumphant, season for the Junior Varsity. If one judges by scores, the midget football team cannot boast of a very brilliant recordg however, from the standpoint of spirit and fight, the season was highly suc- cessful. The first game, with a heavy team from Lindale, was hard fought from start to finish but ended with a victory for Lindale of 12-0. An intercepted pass and line buck both made by Smith, Lindale's fullback, accounted for the victor's two touch- downs. Next, with an evenly matched Druid Hills team, came a game which was exciting from beginning to end. Druid Hills scored after being held two downs on the Midgets' six-inch line. However, the Midgets' tally came when Monty Hill, Captain and tailback, skirted around right tackle in the first half. With a 6-0 tie throughout the game ended. With revenge in their hearts, the Midgets then bore down on Lindale again. In spite of a hard-fought second half, the Tigers went down again, defeated this time by a score of 7-0. Next the Midgets took the winning column with a 24-6 victory over Anchor Duck. However, in a return game, Anchor Duck avenged their defeat by a score of 20-6. Credit must go to Coach Williams and Captain Hill for their outstanding work. arsity . x uw l First row, left to right: Monty Hill, Hutaff, Wade, Alexander, Cunningham, Newell Hicks .Second row: Coach Milligan, Miles, Brooks, Stanford, Jack Henderson, Stone, Her- man . The Darlington team started off the season by defeating Shannon Mills Athletic Club 39-31. From the opening whistle to the last issue was never in doubt. The home team handled the ball well and hit the basket with regu- larity. The feature of the game, however, was the sharp- shooting of SDHIHIOIIQS J. M. Culberson, one time Darling- ton All-Midsouth selection, who topped the individual scoring with 14- points. Sewanee Military Academy was next to meet the Tigers. The game was played in the home gym with Sewanee winning by a narrow margin, 19-18. Not in their customary form, the Darlington quintet was unable to cope with S. M. Afs line defensive play. A field goal in the final seconds of the tilt spelled the difference. It was Darling- ton's first Mid-south game. In their third game of the season the Tigers were top- pled by McHenry 39-36. The game was neck-and-neck until the visiting team pulled ahead in the last quarter. Darlington fought back with a rally in the closing minutes of the contest, but was never able to overcome McHenry's lead. Alexander accounted for half of the Tiger's score. The Cartersville quintet was the next to fall to the Dar- lington team. Although scrappy, the opposition was com- pletely outclassed. Darlington won, 53-9. ln the fifth game in the Darlington schedule, Berry Col- lege took the 'Tigers into camp. Berry quickly gained a lead in the opening minutes of the game and retained it throughout. The final score was Berry 32,'Darlington 22. In the second mid-south game of the season Darlington defeated Notre Dame in a 38-34 thriller. Although both teams played well, the deciding factor was Darlington's superior backboard work. Brislow, of Notre Dame, lead the scoring for a total of fourteen points. For Darlington 6'Goon Johnson and Alexander were the big guns of the attack. The game exhibited some of the best basketball of the season. The Collinsville, Alabama five was next to tangle with the Tigers on the hardwood. The boys from our neighbor- ing state put up a struggle, but the odds were against them. Darlington won 26-11. asketbalf Darlington's third mid-south game was a nip-and-tuck affair with Tennessee Military Institute. The game entered the last period tied 22-22. But that score remained only for a short while, for the T. M. I. basketeers had gotten the range and were ringing the basket from all angles. The game ended T. M. I. 33, Darlington 24. The next game was the one for which the Darlingtonians had been waiting. The 7-0 defeat the Tigers had suffered at the hands of McCallie in football was not forgotten and the basketball team was gunning for revenge. This game, like all Darlington-McCallie contests, was a thrill- ing encounter with every moment packed with suspense. From the first gun until the last whistle there was seldom more than a two-point difference in the score. Thus two points would mean victory or defeat. lt was Darlington's night for the Tigers won by two points, 31-29. Eleven points made by the Tigers from thirteen free throws helped contribute to the game's outcome. Earlier in the season McHenry had handed Darlington a 39-36 shellacking, but this time the Tigers were to do the shellacking. During the first quarter McHenry rode on the crest of a scoring waveg it seemed as if practically every shot attempted meant extra addition for the score- keeper. However, this luck was not to last, Darlington's clever ball handling and the fine shooting of Captain Reily put the Purples definitely in the running. The game con- tinued with neither team ahead of the other, and thus it ended, Darlington 27, McHenry 25. This game was to see the Tigers come back to polish off Tennessee Military Institute who had beaten them in a previous scrap. lt was no push-over. T. M. l.'s McMillan, no bigger than a minute, was a constant source of trouhle. Darlington, too, had boys who could score. Alexander con- tributed twenty of the Tiger's forty-one points, with Helly racking up eleven. The Purple's game was characterized by fast, accurate passing .and unerring shooting. The Tigers with a deserved score carried off a victory of 41 to 32. In the last Mid-South game of the season the Tigers journeyed to Chattanooga to lose to McCallie. Although this contest was not so close as the previous one, the game offered many thrills. The last quarter rally of the Tigers failed to overtake the Blue Tornado's early lead, thus hfring- ing the game to a close with a 37-31 victory for our opponents. The last game of the season was to see the Tigers avenge an early defeat by their intra-city foe, Berry College. After a closely fought game throughout, Captain Reily with a skillful one-hand shot in the last few seconds of play clinched the Darlingtonian victory 35-33. ln the first round of the Mid-South tournament nt Chat- tanooga, Darlington was pitted against McCallie. Because of illness preventing Captain lieily's participation, the Tiger Quintet was put at a disadvantage, and consequently went down to a 410-23 defeat. Having lost to McCallie, Darlington faced Nlorgan School in the consolation play-off. Still unable to regain their former finesse, the Tigers were defeated hy a score of 32-30. I . . asketbaff The Junior Varsity Basketball Group, under the able supervision of Coach Heddiek, enjoyed a most successful season. Twenty-one boys, chosen from the original fifty. comprised the A and B squads of this year's J. V. Having had instruction in individual and zone defense. the A squad won its first game over a hard-fighting Tubize team. The B squad, in the next and perhaps the hardest game of the season. turned in a close 22-2'l win over the Community House of Rome. The A and B squads combined forces in the next en- eonnter to defeat a team composed of members of the Intramural Touch-Football group. Sweeping on in this series of straight wins the A squad added another victory. 28-22. over a Harmony, Alabama. team. The B division, by a score of 19-7 over nearby lN'lcHr-nry, accounted for a fifth consecutive victory. However, this fine record was broken when the A squad suffered defeat from the Nlolienry group. This game was very close, having ended in a 24-24 tie, but the overtime period gave the opponents three points to take the game. The J. V. team has had a fine season and next year's varsity should be greatly supplemented by members of this organization. This proposal advocated the establishment of an honor system, the administration of which was to be delegated to an Honor Coun- cil. The members of the Council were to be chosen by the students from the student body with representatives from each class. Realizing the value of this plan, the authorities gave their consent. Members of the first Council were: Hollie Vandiver, Roy Echols, John Wooten, Barrington King, Thompson Hiles, and Earl Shamblin. It was not until several years later, however, in 1921, that a Constitution for the Honor System was adopted. The purpose of the Honor System is to instill in the students a spirit of honor and of fair play. Although the Honor Council itself has no final authoritv as to punishments for infractions of the Honor Code, the faculty follows i11 large measure the recommendations made by the Council in such matters. The Honor System and Council have done much to earn for the school the reputa- tion it now has for the encouragement of honor and of Christian ideals and ways of living. The Council this year has been under the able leadership of President Dick Yankee. TheiVice-Presidents have been Evert Bancker and John Turbidy. The line work of thc cditors and business managers over the years has earned an enviable reputation for the publication. For two years, however, it has been impossible to publish the usual bound book because of war-time conditions. The Hnal edition of The Darlinglolzian has carried pictures of the seniors and various campus scenes as a mcmento for the members of the graduating class. The publication of this 1945 JABBERWOKK can be attributed to an overwhelming desire upon the part ofthe entire student body again to publish an annual lila- those of past years. As a result of this desire to help in the publication of the book both the Business and Literary staffs have been larger than any others in recent years. Special recognition should be given to the business staff, under the direction of Wzlltei' Howell, who have raised the necessary funds for the publication. In overcoming war-time difficulties in photography and printing to publish this annual the student body may justly be proud of their memorial to the alumni of the school who are scattered to different parts of the world, bghting for the princi- ples that make possible such institutions as Darlington and such enterprises as the JABBERWOKK. Through the years these are the principles by which all of the activities of the Grail have been governed As a result the best interests of Darlington have been promoted individually and col- lectively through the medium of the club This year the Grail has been unfortunate in that it has lost two presidents in succession. Chuck Lheatem president elect for the year graduated at Christmas. Henry Tull, his successor, was called by the Navy at mld term Even in the face of these difficulties the Grail has carried out some important and worthwhile projects Under the sponsorship of a committee composed of Bancker Fred Johnson, Flournoy, Turbidy, buck and Glasgow Darlington well exceeded IIS quota of 352 500 in the 6th War Loan Campaign. Also sponsored by the Grail was the sale of Christmas Tuberculosis Seals. By such projects as these the Grail not only has instilled a sense of responsibility in all our students but has contributed its part in the betterment of present world conditions. ' v 7 7 . . 0' . The Committee successfully sponsored the Darlington Homecoming Dance, which M215 held on Saturday, December 2, the night after the homecoming game with Mc- Callie. The dance took place in the gymnasium, which was appropriately decorated with the school colors, purple and white. George Van Arsdale and his orchestra from Chattanooga, Tennessee. furnished excellent music for the occasion. Because of the scarcity of decorative materials and orchestras, the Committee has lound dilliculty in promoting as many formal dances as in pre-war times. However, plans are being completed for another formal dance which will be given before the cnd of the school year. These forinals have been supplemented throughout the year by intermittent in- litiflllill dances, better known as Hljate Nights. The Committee has been ably assisted in all of its activities by its faculty advisers, lllrs. lwdia Sheppard and Mr. H. ll. Honey. First row, left In right: Wade, Rogers, Jones. Executive Ojicer During the past year the Rifle Club has grown into one of the more active organi- zations in the school. In spite of the scarcity of ammunition the fact that the club is a chartered member of the National Rifle Association has enabled it to obtain shells through the War Department. The members have been divided into two groupsg those under fifteen, with lVlr. Dorsey in charge, and those over fifteen, under the direction of Major Moore, Activi- ties began in classroom instruction, safety, and range procedure. Because of the late start the club had this year, it was impossible to develop enough skill for com- petition with other schools. Early in the fall the three companies comprising the battalion were divided into platoons so that the rnilitary training program could be voordinated with the physical education set-up. Full battalion drill is scheduled for one day each week. During the early part of the year the military program operated under temporary cadet officers in order to provide opportunity for each student with military experience to demonstrate his qualifications for leadership. As we go to press permanent ap- pointments are expected daily. Neeently the battalion has obtained training rifles from the U. S. Army. Practice to obtain eHieient-y in the manual of arms has become part of the regular program. Plans are now being made for the annual battalion review which is usually held in late April or early May. Under the capable leadership of Mr. J. l.. Brandon the ba11d has done some excel- lent work this year. ln addition to playing for regular battalion drill it has given st-ve-ral very enjoyable concerts at assembly. Also the work of the group in supplying mnsit' at many of the football games cannot go unnoticed. THE HATTALION ,WX YT w Q 5 K , - . I 'vw-fm ggwft f L.
