JOHN PAUL and ALICE ALLGOOD COOPER Mr and Mrs Cooper opened their home to trustees teachers and students and their loyalty to the staff and to the school even when mistakes were made was a constant source of inspiration and encouragement Through rt all Mr and Mrs Cooper kept themselves in the background and concealed their helpfulness as much as possible With the unconditional financial support ot Mr Cooper Darlrngton School de veloped into a recognized local Institution having the highest scholastic reputation However as the years passed Mr Cooper came to the realizatron that rt the school was to continue to operate in the future as a permanent enterprise it would be neces sary to establish rt on a selt sustaining financial basrs lt was hrs expressed opinion that no institution is sound that rs not financially sound Consequently l92I through the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs Mr Cooper challenged the people of Rome to of the plant to include a boarding department ln presenting hrs proposition to the people of Rome Mr Cooper pledged S50 OOO contingent upon this sums being matched by an equal amount through public subscription In addition he agreed to purchase the beautiful DeSoto Park property tor the location of the new plant Com mrttees appointed from the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs organized the drive and carried the proposition to the citizens ot the community In a remarkably short time the people of Rome responded with characteristic vrsron and generosity and S60 OOO was subscribed With this magnificent gesture the people ot Rome unequivocally endorsed the work which had been set rn motion by the founders ot the school Subsequently modern and beautiful buildings ot the English Renaissance type were erected on the new site and Greater Darlington became a realrty At this time the faculty was greatly enlarged and during the following years the school has continued to grow The administration has untailrngly observed Mr Cooper s stipulation with reference to linances In that since the begrnnrng of the boardrng department rn l923 the school has operated without one penny of deficit ' ' I I I I , , ' ll 4 I - I I ' , - . , in , become associated with the school by giving ot their means to enable the enlargement I ' I I ' I , ' I I . . . . .
