JOSEPH JAMES DARLINGTON the secret ot rt What I do lcnow rs this that upon the boys who attended the school he lett an rnettacable rmpressron and I thrnlc he largely influenced their tuture lrves I belreve l am warranted rn saying that he rntluenced them for good to themselves and to their country After two years ot trurttul experrence rn the Proctor School Mr Darlrngton left Rome tor Washington D C where he entered the senror class ot Columbia Law School Upon graduatron he was admitted to the bar and entered the law ottrces ot th Honor able Rrchard T Merrrclc Four years later rn I878 Mr Darlington began practrce tor hrmselt Hrs abrlrty as an attorney hrs reputation tor honesty and rntegrrty and the quret strength ot hrs lrte and character soon won tor hrm a pre emrnent place at the Drstrrct Bar On July 2l l885 Mr Darlington married Miss Elizabeth Rachel Meador the only child ot the Reverend Chastarn C Meador who founded the old Frtth Baptist Church This was Mr Meadors only pastorate and he served the church through forty seven years ot trurttul labor Mrs Darlrngton dred rn l89O survived by their two daughters Mrss Anne Charlotte also survive therr father Again quotrng from the Honorable F Regrs Noel The death ot hrs wrte thus early was a blow trom which Mr Darlington never recovered I-le made an etlort to drown hrs sorrow rn hrs work At the trme ot hrs death rn l92O Mr Darlington was the honored and beloved Dean ot the Bar of the Drstrrct ot Columbra There stands today rn Judrcrary Square Washrngton D C a monument erected to the memory ot Joseph James Darlrngton by a tew ot hrs close trrends and wrth the sanction ot Congress and the approval of the National Fine Arts Commrttee lt bears the tollowrng rnscrrptron IN MEMORY OF JOSEPH JAMES DARLINGTON I849 I92O COUNSELOR TEACHER LOVER OE MANKIND Throughout hrs lite Mr Darlington was an ardent churchman and tor many years was teacher ot the Berean Brble Class rn the Frtth Baptist Church Washrngton D C He was lcrnd and generous and gave largely ot hrs means and ot hrmselt to the bet terment of those around hrm Many ot the ablest and most drstrngurshed barrrsters practrcrng rn the Caprtal Crty today served their apprentrceshrp rn the ottrce ot Mr . . . 6 - Darlington and Mrs. Elizabeth D. Cooypez OHN PAUL COOPER was born rn Rome Georgra July 27 I858 l-lrs mother the former Mrss Harrret Smrth had marrred Captarn John Frederrclc Cooper who was lcrlled rn the trrst battle ot Manassas After the death ot hrs tather John Paul made hrs home durrng the summer months wrth hrs grandfather Major Mark Cooper at Glenholly near Cartersvrlle Georgra Durrng the wrnter he lrved wrth hrs mother rn by Mr John M Proctor he trrst came under the rntluence ot Joseph James Darlrngton who was at that trme assocrated wrth Mr Proctor rn the school Mr Darlrngton even tually entered the legal protessron however durrng the trme he was connected wrth the Proctor School as teacher and counselor the torce ot hrs personalrty rmpressed rtselt unalterably upon the lrves of the boys who came under hrs rntluence Not only hrs scholarly attrrbutes but hrs loyalty to the trnest rdeals and hrghest standards ot personal conduct left therr marlc tor good upon hrs students When rn late years John Paul Cooper founded a school for the boys ot Rome he named rt Darlrngton School as a trrbute to hrs former teacher and lrte long trrend On June 6 I889 Mr Cooper marrred Mrss Alrce Allgood a young lady of charm and drstrnctron Alrce Allgood was born September 25 l865 Her mother Mary Marsh Allgood was a natrve ot North Carolrna Her 'Father Andrew P Allgood had come from South Carolrna and rn 1843 founded the Trron Mrlls at Trron Georgra Three years prror to hrs marrrage Mr Cooper had gone to Boston Massachusetts where he entered busrness wrth Mr Charles Brush torm ng the trrm lcnown as Cooper and Brush He had for personal reasons determrned to lay the toundatrons of hrs busrness rnterest rn the East and for many years after therr marrrage Mr and Mrs .
